I think they've dug themselves a big hole with the fan zone.

I think it made a lot of sense when they were a playoff bubble team, coming off a recent deep run, had the All Star game in town, had just drafted Skinner, were getting ready to acquire some high priced players, and were generally a team with some buzz around them.

I feel certain that they would have done things very differently if they had known what the 2013, 2014 and 2015 seasons were going to look like.

Am I the only one that thinks those numbers in this market for a 27th ranked team that hasn't been in the playoffs in 5 years are pretty good?

They're understandable, but I wouldn't at all call them pretty good.

This. If this was a football or baseball team playing in a 40,000 seat stadium, then 63.5% attendance would be OK for the way they've been playing. But this is a league that is currently averaging 93.8%. Even at 99%, we'd be in the middle of the pack.

Nah, I've heard the same thing about the money working out behind the scenes. If they win, they'll fill the building pretty much no matter what. It's really nothing more than a talking point, IMO.

But the parking still sucks with no mass transit options.

I think it's easy to forget that we're the smallest and one of the least-traditional American markets. If our team is terrible for years on end, we have every right to be last in attendance.

Don Waddell has provided a bit more transparency into the financial aspects of the Canes than we've seen in the past.

This Triangle Business Journal article from early in the season provided a good combo of what's known and what he shared with them.

They talk within the article about the increased revenue sharing amounts covering the admission revenue decline.

As Hurricanes continue search for new owners/investors (they're not moving, relax), they're also working with city/county on arena upgrades

What additional upgrades could be done or are needed at present? From a creature comforts perspective, operable guest wifi would be nice. I think our videoboard/jumbotron is at least in line with the rest of the league (notable exceptions like the board in Tampa Bay aside). Not knowing the floor plans/architecture, maybe some additions up on the 300 level would be nice (especially in the extreme South end where there's almost nothing in the way of concessions). I recall that in the offseason one of the suites was converted to loge seating, might more of that also happen?

RALEIGH — The Centennial Authority on Thursday approved $175,000 to move a step closer to PNC Arena expansion: the development of a master plan and the setting of a price.

The authority, which oversees operation of the 15-year-old arena, had hired design firms Ratio and 360 Architecture to produce conceptual expansion plans. A presentation was made Thursday by Jennifer Sisak, a senior associate with Ratio.

The south end of the arena, facing Carter-Finley Stadium, would be expanded to add a “rooftop experience†that would include a bar and dining area. The north end would have added storage space and hospitality rooms.

One major change would be shifting many of the offices used by Gale Force Entertainment and the Carolina Hurricanes from the south end to the north end of the arena. There also was some talk Thursday about the Wolfpack Club, N.C. State’s athletic booster organization, having interest in moving its offices into the arena.

Article from a couple weeks ago: http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/11/24/4349769_pnc-arena-expansion-may-have-different.html?rh=1

The south end of the arena, which faces Carter-Finley Stadium, could have a new restaurant and rooftop bar. There could be a new, smaller box-office area and expanded retail space for The Eye, the Carolina Hurricanes’ merchandise store.

Jeff Merritt, executive director of the Centennial Authority, said Monday those were among the recommendations made by Ratio Architects and 360 Architecture, the two design firms hired by the authority to develop an expansion concept. Initially, the authority, which oversees the operation of the arena, talked of expanding only on the north end of the building.

Under the re-design, the offices for Gale Force Entertainment and the Hurricanes, now on the south end of the arena, would be moved to new space on the north end. The north end also would have additional meeting rooms and utility space and an employees entrance.

And last week: http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/12/04/4377211/centennial-authority-oks-master.html

The authority also approved up to $120,000 to renovate and outfit existing office space for 30 new employees to be hired by the Hurricanes. Team president Don Waddell said $2.2 million would be spent to add staff, many in sales.

Clearly salespersons to sell the team to a new market. :sarcasm:

Random Thought:

If Vegas gets a expansion team next year and the NHL holds an expansion draft. Do you see any way that Semin doesn't get drafted?

The NHL is not going to expand to any more Canadian markets. Reason being, more people live in the USA thus giving the sport a chance to appeal to a larger population means more potential revenue.
