From LeBrun:

Once the Habs realized they were out on Pierre-Luc Dubois, they focused their efforts on Alex Newhook. Obviously, it’s a step down in talent from Dubois, but just as GM Kent Hughes saw an upside play on Kirby Dach a year ago, he sees one in the 22-year-old Newhook, who was a 2019 first-round pick. It’s the type of gamble that makes sense for where Montreal is in its continued roster makeover.

The Jets/Kings deal really did help the Avs pull off this move. Just a bit of a step down for the Habs. 😂

yeah just a bit of "a step down". lol more like two freaking firefighting turntable ladders, Id say.

after the Johansen deal, now this... I think people should start considering a "We love you, CMac" thread. he deserves. turning NewJost into a 1st, 2nd and a prospect is obscene. now the Avs have a ton of possibilities going into the draft. can trade up, can pick all three (including our 1st), can trade some, can trade all, can pick a freaking goalie ffs, etc

And the curse started with selling Deadmarsh's soul for a Stanley Cup

I really expected so much more from Brassard and Matthias

The Avs have no trade assets was said. Even a bum like Hook fetched a nice return. They have the pieces to be really active if they want.

I assume the Avs are still interested in trying to bring JTC back, otherwise, I'm sure a team would've thrown a late pick or future considerations our way to get an early jump on contract talks.

That being said if anyone wanted to talk to our UFAs early, I'd make it damn clear they are able to for a late pick.

I'm not sure we have the assets, or that it would be a wise use of them, to trade up into the top 10. But that is the only way I want this organization to keep those 2 1sts, and the 2nd.

I've been really hard on Newhook this last season, but that doesn't mean I didn't like him as a player or most definitely as a person. My gripes about him as a player is that I don't think he ever realistically had 2C upside, and while he shows some flashes of talent, he just kept getting yanked around and wasn't able to define a roll for himself.

We are a cup contending team, with loads of talent and competition for ice-time and slots. Montreal, not so much. I think a couple of years of playing on a rebuilding team without as much pressure will allow him to develop better into an NHL player than getting continuously bounced around here. I hope he takes this as an opportunity and runs with it and really do wish him the best.
