The impact of this pick on the roster cannot be overstated. So many ways this roster can go. Thoughts and Questions for everyone:
1 - Getting Laf creates flexibility to make trades. But is it smart to make too many moves before we see how things shake out with chemistry, etc?
2 - Team likely more willing to move guys like Buchnevich, Kravtsov, Strome and Georgy as well as our other 1st round pick.
3 - Still feel like Strome is going to be re-signed. I bet he will take a team friendly deal too. i think he wants to stay as I'm not sure he is as valued elsewhere as he is here. If he is kept, he's merely a stop gap. But an upgrade at 2c and LD are the likely trade targets.
4 - Does this make Hank re-think any retirement plans? I have a feeling his desire to stay with the team may have gone up in the last 6 hours
5 - And likewise, does this make Georgy more likely to be dealt in a bigger deal?
6 - I think we will at least inquire about Eichel, Barzal and Nylander, but I'd rather focus our efforts on solidifying the D. I don't think we need another very dynamic center, I think we have wingers who can drive the car. I think we need to think about balance. An established, reliable 2nd-pairing LD is what we need. Someone who can play up until Miller/Robertson/Lindgren are ready to assume first pairing.
7. One of Staal or Smith has to go.
8. A really interesting aspect to drafting Lafreniere.... at some point in the near future our big offensive lines might be driven from the wings. Panarin, Laf, Kakko, Buch and Kravtsov are all distributors. There's not a pure Gartner or Amonte in the lot. And our best Cs - Zib and Chytil - are closer to power forwards by comparison.
9. I really want to see Gauthier on a line with high end talent where he gets to be the puck retriever, net front presence. Wouldn't mind seeing Laf, Gauthier and Chytil on a line. They could really cycle the crud out of teams. But then again that might be the most defensively irresponsible line in hockey.
