It's not the #1 pick that will be dealt for a center, it's whether having the #1 pick makes the Rangers feel more comfortable moving other items of value for a center.

Which it should...

It definitely opens up a world of possibilities. The question is whether or not they act on it this summer or wait until they see how things shake out next season. Keeping Buch provides insulation for Kakko and the other RWs to not have to play too far up the lineup.

Well, here's a bit of a rub...you're likely adding the best player in the upcoming draft who likely starts his clock next season. The clock is not just ticking, but, humming. You need to take advantage of the multitude of ELCs on this team.

No its going to be Laf.

Gorton would have completely dodged the question he was asked after they won the lottery if they were considering otherwise (he gave the media an open ended answer after they won last year because they weren't sure who w as going to go #1 or 2) Theres a .0000000069% chance they trade this pick, and that only happens if Ottawa wants to get stupid.
Unless Laf is caught with a live boy or dead girl

Kravtsov played center for Russia u20 in the 4N tournament in Hodonin in Nov 2018 (3 games) and the WJC in Vancouver in Dec/Jan 2018-19. He is not a center, even though he has stated he would play if they ask him to. I don't see him playing center in the NHL to be honest. Kakko is more likely, as he has played some at different age levels in league play, more than Kravtsov

From a while back in the Athletic. How Lafreniere compares to the other recent first overall picks.

1. Eastern Conference executive: Connor McDavid

2. Western Conference executive: Auston Matthews

3. Eastern Conference executive: Nathan MacKinnon

4. Eastern Conference scouting director: Rasmus Dahlin
T.
5. Eastern Conference executive: Alexis Lafreniere
Here it is. The promise of Lafreniere was more than this executive could pass up, even with really, good established NHL players on the board – including a recent Hart Trophy winner. This executive narrowed the pick down to Lafreniere or Hughes and ultimately was so impressed with Lafreniere’s performance at the world juniors that he couldn’t pass him up.
“For me, the Q is one thing. The U20s, he was outstanding,” said the executive. “It was pretty amazing to see his ability to get to different places and finish. It seems like he didn’t feel any pressure, which was impressive. Hall obviously comes into play here. Hischier comes into play, but I think Lafreniere has the higher upside. He’s also not afraid to be competitive physically, which is a differentiating factor.”
6. Eastern Conference executive: Jack Hughes

7. Western conference executive: Aaron Ekblad

8. Western conference executive: Nico Hischier

9. Eastern Conference executive: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

10. Western Conference executive: Taylor Hall

don't get me wrong I'm thrilled we got Lafreniere, but I can't help but think the league is rigging this thing. Last year it was us and Blackhawks who jumped up big (two big market teams) and now this year we get the 1st overall.
hmmm how about no. Newark won two out of the last three years (not including this one thank goodness).
We get one number one pick since the flintstones and people start saying its rigged.

He's the type of player that needs a kick in the ass to perform.

Playing center (where he's done well in FO's) will give him that kick in the ass that he needs.

A new challenge..

Lafreniere might be the center. Rangers need to be smart. Great problem to have but that new Kreider contract and Zibby in the near future is kinda crazy. Great problem but we need a center and there is no way in Hell Strome should be signed long term.

Meaningless.

You are talking 3 years of Laf on a rookie deal. That is massive, massive value. Eichel is a $10M player.

This is a capped league with the cap potentially going down, even. No f***ing way am I trading him for a $10M player unless the other team is eating half the contract.

I've been saying essentially the same thing. This gift gives the Rangers a lot of flexibility to spread out their forward talent across three lines now. I think it makes Strome more important to keep in the short term, while making Buch the more likely asset to get moved, especially for the right LD.

I was more thinking about how it’s crazy to interview anyone and ask them questions as if it’s set in stone, this is where they’re going.

Not that I really think anything else will happen, your murmurings not withstanding. It’s just silly they do this. They did it with Hughes last year too.

Also a very valid point.

The rangers are better off using their multitude of assets to go get a center.
