Ok unless the return was too good to turn down, it would be dumb.
kudos for the open mind
As you said, RHD are in high demand. Why the hell do we want to trade a young one who looks like hes figuring out and was a stud down the stretch?
It is less a matter of we want to, as much as it could make sense to do so.
Again, tap that open mind.
I didn't say throw DeA to the wolves, get rid of him, give him the bum's rush. Mine eyes have also seen his growth and marked improvement.
I suggested specifically, while being open to other options, a package deal which included Deangelo to Sabes for Samuellsson [a righty 2nd round RD with good bloodlines looking like a solid prospect] and that eye openner RD prospect, sorry I forgot the Scandinavian name, not listed on capfriendly cause he's not signed yet.
consider:
1) that gives us 2 emerging guys for 1 in an area of critical need. We do have some nice RD prospects in the pipeline but they are all 1-2 years away min. The more we add to that, the more chances we get not just a guy as good as ADA, but a better one.
2) both those guys are elc and no mins in NHL yet, so they are expansion draft exempt. Remember, you want to deal with that, get ahead of that curve, you act NOW, not later, when options are reduced and hands are tied. Deangelo just finished elc and is now rfa.
3) In my prop w/Buf, we would be doing Lias, Howden and Deangelo for 7OA + StL 2019 late 1st + the two RD prospects indicated above.
How many exemptions do we have? 7 Fs, 3Ds + a G. Repurpose our Fs. Kakko will be exempt, not sure about Krav. Panarin if he signs. Zib if we don't move him now while we can for a true stud RD now or other significant futures to do so later. Kreider. And that is leaving out others. So if Buf will pay top dollar for immediate help NOW, then NOW is the time to do that deal.
4) In that deal, we are moving a 7OA value in Andersson for a 7OA from a deeper draft. That is a crapshoot and I agree it is mathematically ballpark, but I could understand Sabes wanting a sweetener. Howden is only 1 yr in his elc and is a former 26 or so OA vs a very late Blues pick, so they can't complain there, might even be slight advantage to them. So setting aside what this deal is on its own, moving Deangelo in that package also helps equalize that deal from Buf's standpoint.
We should be looking to get whatever we can for Pionk, who despite being the same age as DeAngelo showed nothing last year outside of an excellent rush against Montreal and a few decent clappers.
no one is giving us anything significant or otherwise for Pionk now, as is.
If we do a deal sending Zib + for Rasmus Andersson ++, then I could see Pionk going as a minute eating 3RD or 7th depth guy to Flames, given they'd have coughed up Raz.
But not too many other scenarios.
See if he improves, then move.
EK probably isn't ending up here and hes not signing for a year.
He's made his millions.
Another huge contract for max term would be nice, but it is not critical for him.
The odds would be much smaller without his buddy Lundqvist already here, but I can see him responding positively to Hank outreach if NY puts enuf mo on the table.
11 mil 1 yr, see if my design comes to fruition
if we are not [strong] playoff contender, then we deal him to contender of his choice who also gives us enough. If nec, we eat half for him as a rental. win win either way.
He buys us 1 yr as stopgap vs arriving RDs, so worth it.
