I'd rather keep Shattenkirk than Staal or Smith and hell, all things being equal, Pionk

Mathieu Schneider became a pretty serviceable top 4 D man for a few years and played a game similar to Pionk. I'd hate to give up on a player like that because he didn't set the world on fire coming out of the gates. Especially coming from a short schedule like the NCAA instead of Major Jr's.

And Shattenkirk has been an undeniable pile of shit. There is no need to dive into deep analytics to debate him.

Pionk and Shattenkirk pack your **** please

I think Pionk will be ok as a 3RD. Hes not the kind of talent who can take on top-6 forwards as a 23 year old rookie, which is how he got used this year. But he could log competent minutes against bottom-6 guys. As he matures, may be better. There's no reason to think he won't be better.

Yeah, same here. I'd play the three guys from last year and let the logjam work itself out. It always does. Hopefully the guys build up some value and a trade offer materializes. Also serves the dual purposes of letting Fox adjust in the AHL for half a season and keeping the draft pick condition from triggering.

Perfect world for me, you keep Shattenkirk until his bonus is paid out next summer. The return will be better/less punitive then. Fox played 38 games this season, he doesn't need to play all 82. Quinn will inevitably want to sit DeAngelo to teach him some lessons. Injuries happen too. Hopefully Pionk has some value around the league and the Rangers capitalize on that now, and another defenseman is brought in to play the minutes Quinn gave to him.

It has to, unless Fox isn't playing off the bat (I think he will) or Pionk is used as an extra.

The only other options would be to Move/buy out Shattenkirk (which would leave us very small and inexperienced on the right side) or to trade DeAngelo (which would be dumb)

why is it automatically dumb?
wouldn't it be better with an open mind to see what that return is, esp since quality RDs are in short supply?

best case scenario, no good trades for a young stud RD available.
the other moves I wanna make get done, our Fs are ready to kick it, our LDs emerge, EK65 hangs with Hank for a yr healthy Shatty is 2RD before Fox is ready to switch w/him.
That's our 3.
Pionk moved or he is 4RD.

Or, other scenario, no 1 yr EK, then:
Shatty
Fox
Pionk [hopefully plays better w/less mins] or alternate

We would not be cutting Deangelo, but getting something for him.

Ok unless the return was too good to turn down, it would be dumb.

As you said, RHD are in high demand. Why the hell do we want to trade a young one who looks like hes figuring out and was a stud down the stretch? We should be looking to get whatever we can for Pionk, who despite being the same age as DeAngelo showed nothing last year outside of an excellent rush against Montreal and a few decent clappers.

EK probably isn't ending up here and hes not signing for a year.

This move should spell the end for Pionk here.

It probably won't, but it really should.
Well, we need to expose someone at the expansion draft. I would keep Pionk for that. The problem is, with ADA and Fox (and Shattenkirk most likely), there’s no room for him on the right side. Maybe trade Pionk and sign a veteran depth d-man when the time comes? Or is that not allowed? Do you have to expose a d-man that’s been on the team for at least 2 years or something?

IIRC you can expose guys who are UFA's to be.

Staal, Smith, Shatty will all be expiring after the expansion draft.

But I thought you had to expose at least one d-man whose contract isn’t expiring and who played at least 40 games the past year or something. If we protect ADA, Skjei, and Hajek, then who will we have left to expose that meets that criteria? Maybe Lindgren if he gets to play full-time with the big club.

They can just sign a defensive equivalent to Grabner, that contract was basically structured to be exposed in the expansion draft

Couple things

Kid is extremely smart and yandle is a good comparison in that regard. He just makes plays and gets pucks thru. Also knows how to move around the O zone to get open.

He is not a good skater though. This scares me. He’s not very big and he doesn’t skate well. It’s improved for sure but he needs a really good summer of work on it.

He is fine on the rush but in the D zone his work leaves a lot to be desired. He may struggle. Tony figured it out but he’s a tough kid that skates so well it was easier for him. Fox is light years smarter so maybe that helps him but I worry about his size and skating in his ability to defend.

I think he can be a second pair guy and tremendous PP guy if his brains are as elite as everyone thinks. His physical abilities are not which may hold him back.
