And Shattenkirk has been an undeniable pile of ****. There is no need to dive into deep analytics to debate him.

Don't know if I'd call him an absolute pile of shit but he's nowhere near worth the money he's making. I think we should try to get rid of Kevin. Staal and Smith aren't worth their cap hits either but at least Staal can handle tough matchups.

He is not a good skater though. This scares me. He’s not very big and he doesn’t skate well. It’s improved for sure but he needs a really good summer of work on it.
Yea it’s a bit concerning for his size, but all else considered, it’s pretty average. He’s elusive, agile, and has really good edge work, but he needs to work on his speed.

Yea there’s no reason to keep him. We are already loaded when it comes to smallish, puck-moving, right handed, offensive defensemen. The difference is, our other options are younger and cheaper than him, and could fill his role just as well. I think we can obviously all agree that we don’t want him taking up a younger defenseman’s spot.

This team’s top need at this point is a #1 D. It’s unlikely, but Tony has the chance to become that. And he’s right handed. I truly hope the team has him identified as part of the core moving forward.
Thank you. Just what I wanted to say. Also, I don’t think his value is as high as it could potentially be. That, and he’s my favorite player, so it would take a lot for me to be happy with trading him.

I'd rather keep Shattenkirk than Staal or Smith and hell, all things being equal, Pionk
I would rather keep Shattenkirk over Smith in theory, but this is an exceptional case. We have 4 very similar players (Shattenkirk, Pionk, DeAngelo, Fox), and since we’re rebuilding, the veteran should be the odd man out. Staal can stay and mentor unless he’s blocking someone like Lindgren/Rykov/K’Andre Miller if/when they’re ready. Smith can be a 12/13/14 forward. Also, Shattenkirk kind of sucked this year. Maybe he’ll be better next year, but I’m tired of him.

He handles them in the sense that hes a body that eats those minutes.

In terms of on ice performance, he doesn't handle them well at all.

I vote for both Smith and Shatty to leave the island

Shattenkirk needs to leave unless Fox needs AHL time or we trade Pionk. And if we can find a trade partner for Smith without giving up more than a 3rd, a prospect like Gettinger, or a player like Namestnikov, then I’m down. If not, I don’t think it would be a good idea to buy him out. Not worth it if he can just play forward. We don’t need the cap space this year, but we will when Smith’s contract expires.

Those pionk jerseys at the MSG team store really scare me. They tell me management considers him a marketable piece of the future. You see zibanejad chytil skjei Lundqvist and pionk jerseys. That’s it. There are racks of pionk jerseys.

Not one DeAngelo Jersey.

Why management loves this kid so much I have no idea. He’s an undrafted nobody. He’s small he’s bad he can’t make a pass. I don’t get it.

Hopefully they’re just trying to flush them out . . .

I REALLY hope that’s what it is..

If they see Pionk as a core piece and don’t see DeAngelo as one, that tells you all you need to know about our management. They’ve done very well recently with drafting and trades, but if this leads to a DeAngelo trade, I cannot overstate how much of a monumental error that will be. We shouldn’t jump to conclusions just yet, but you’re right. It’s concerning. It just feels like next season, Pionk will be given a pass for most things (like he’s been getting this season), while DeAngelo will be on thin ice. This is not even a knock against Pionk. If they view him as a 3rd pairing defenseman, I can forgive that. But a core piece? Seriously? Why? Because of that one goal against Montreal? Lol

Edit: Just realized that I didn’t see Kreider’s name when you mentioned the jerseys. Hmm...

put me in the smith over shatty camp here. on ice ada/fox and even pionk have passed shatty...off ice he seems like a really good guy but not a locker room anchor. smith on the other hand, when focused- and with the ability to play fwd or d, can be a force physically and seems to be a bigger piece of the room from what i've observed. as i watch these playoffs, thats the kind of guy i'd rather have on the roster fringes for extra minutes in a heavy series...just my 2 cents.
