What are the expectations for Jesper Fast? Seems to be a decent bet for 30 pts a season, maybe if he plays with Lias he could hit 40?
I think in the 25-35 point range. He has played higher in the lineup for extended periods before, but he seems to generally come out around 30 points.

Lias, I think, will make the team out of camp. I don't think he's quite ready to be elevating his teammates to new heights, though.

Fast is the type of player who can play in any situation up and down the lineup. He isn't the most skilled player, but he's a very smart player. 40 points is possible depending on his role.

Day is now U21. Last year he would've been U20.

By all means, no reason to terminate his contract, but I feel like Day's potential and his hockey skills are a complete misnomer. He's big and skates great. Thats been known for five years. Is there any consensus that he had quantifiable hockey skills? I'm not sure there ever was. Its easy to throw out these platitudes like project, raw, potential and add Day into that category, but how exactly did Day factor into those designations? Is there consensus that those designations applied to him? I'm not specifically throwing this at you, but I think its something to consider whether Day actually deserved the reputation he had. As far as I'm concerned, his ceiling was never particularly high because beyond the size and skating there wasn't much else to his game that works in the NHL.
I know, I used this season’s stats just to reflect that it wasn’t that big of a deal that Day didn’t make the AHL this past year. ECHL/AHL time splits are to be expected of a player of his caliber as a U21 player. Edge addressed the skill part of your post well, so I’ll leave it at that.

We're back to a Tortorella type of coach, who wants big and physical players. That's why Keane stays.

Poor Ronning didn't even get a chance to show what he can do.

He isn't physical either, stop trying to so obviously push an agenda.

He and Fast were both engaged along the boards last night. They ended up opening space for each other, and that's what made them especially effective. It's one preseason game, so we'll see how it works against more seasoned players, but give them another guy who doesn't mind getting dirty and has some offense and they can be a very dangerous third line.

so 52 to 44 means we have 8 cuts

Ronning
Day
Leedahl
Nell
Brodeur
Pedrie
Gross
Nieves

or is Nieves not cut?

If he’s hurt I don’t think he can be sent down, he’d have to be placed on IR or LTIR until he’s healthy enough to play. Rangers had to carry Fogarty to start the season last year since he was hurt.

Ronning didn't practice?

I think most of us expected to see him in a couple of pre-season games, but this coach found no room for him, probably based on his lack of size. We know Ronning has great talent, I really hope Quinn doesn't waste it. Be prepared for another Torts system.

Ronning got a raw deal, wanted a longer look. Odd move.

Always feels like guys should get at least a look in a game but if he hasn't been practicing well compared to other players and the coach wants to cut the roster down fairly quickly, then there you go...

I don't know how Ronning has done in practice, I'm just guessing that the coaches are seeing he needs a lot of work and needs AHL time and are making that move now rather than later.

e: I doubt it's completely about size other than Ronning will always be at a disadvantage because he's far smaller than the average NHLer. On top of that he's no Gaudreau or something in that he is so skilled that he can easily overcome his size.

In any case, he has gotten a chance to show what he can do in practice and if that part has been lacking it's not a huge surprise if they want him to work on improving things in the AHL.

I generally pay more attention and heed to camp cuts on the blueline- because defenders that make the roster here out of camp tend to be 'stickier' than the forwards- there are less demotions and promotions over the course of the season at that position.

If Ronning plays well in the AHL little stops him from getting a callup.

Crawley staying over Day is interesting. A little surprised Schneider and Butler are still around.

Keane hasn't even played a preseason game. Chill.

I think guys like Schneider and Butler get looks because coaches are trying to get an idea of what they can do as short term vet AHL callups etc. You know those guys are basically 4A players...maaaaaybe once and awhile a guy breaks through and you're like "great, you're on the real roster" but mostly they're good for AHL vets and spot NHL duty at times

More seasoned players? Didn't he steal the puck from Taylor Hall before he scored shorthanded, my friend? :sarcasm:
Andersson is more than ready, and it wouldn't surprise me if he had his breakout season in 2018/2019. :thumbu:

The Rangers beats who are "surprised" or "shocked" Day got cut are showing their lack of prospect knowledge. He was never supposed to make the team.

He's a 20 year old long term project in his first year of pro hockey. He'll go to the Pack this season and learn. If he gets cut early next year, okay I can see the potential concern, but even then it's unwarranted.

Not really. Crawley was with the team deep into the preseason last year, and he played in the AHL last year. He's a year ahead in his development

Well Neal Pionk led the team in icetime last night and Cody Mcleod played a full 6 minutes less than everyone besides Lindqvist but you are randomly assuming Ronning was cut just because of his size? Does Quinn selectively have a size agenda?

If they thought Ronning had any chance of contributing at the NHL level he would still be with the team. I, like most others, would have liked to see him in a game just to see him play at this level but I trust that if he was cut already it probably wouldn't have gone well for him. And just because he was an early cut doesn't mean he wont be with the team later this year.

There is a lot more time and space in preseason games (especially early ones) than there is in regular season games when things get serious. It's good that Andersson had a good game but he's going to have to keep matching the intensity of the game as it ratchets up.

I think he has a good chance to make the team, and he'll have a solid season if he does, but there are going to be ups and downs as always

Kailer Yamamoto is getting a nice look with Edmonton, no reason why Ronning shouldn't have with us.
