I would strongly hesitate to say that Howden is a better option at center than Kevin Hayes. I like Howden, a lot, and he did have a good TCT--but really, TCT doesn't mean a whole lot in terms of whether a player is actually ready to play in the NHL. Hayes has been a guy that averages 19 goals, 27 assists and 46 points every year (per 82) and has been producing basically those exact numbers since he first stepped into the league. Again, I really like Howden, but I sincerely doubt that if you gave him Hayes' role, or ice time, that he could just step right in and produce those numbers.

I don't know how they'll manage the centers, but I don't think having Hayes around for at least another year is a problem.

I think there's a tendency to put the cart before the horse in terms of the timing of moving a veteran.

I don't know if we ever quite give enough to credit to how much work has to go into not only making it to the NHL, but then staying there and progressing.

My opinion is that if the right deal for Hayes presents itself, Gorton needs to make it. I’m not convinced the Rangers need to protect the young centers. My belief is that Andersson is ready, and I felt that before last night. Of course, I’m someone who cares little for what this team’s record is this season.

It’s gonna happen but likely at the deadline . Less pressure for the kids if Zib and Hayes can eat some minutes

I’d rather keep Zib over Hayes then play Chytil , Andersson , Howden as long as they’ve earned the minutes

I mean there are other means to do this with out having Hayes around but there isn't any reason to rush into a move now.

If Howden/Chytil/Andersson all force their way into the lineup at some time this year, the situation will take care of itself.

It's good to see them making big cuts already, it always seemed like AV kept the groups too big and let players who weren't making it around for way too long.

Day getting scratched from two straight TC games probably sealed his fate here. Hartford or does he have another season in juniors?
He could conceivably go back to the OHL, where he would become (I believe) the first player ever to spend six seasons in a CHL league.

I suspect he's in Hartford or possibly even Maine to start the year.

ECHL for Day. There's just too many defensemen that are better than him that are ahead of him on the depth chart.

I saw Quinn mention that they want O'Gara to be a little more 'mean'. IN that he meant just stepping up and leaning on players a bit more. Use his size more. I have a feeling we will see some of O'Gara this season. he looked solid last night and if he can add even a little bit of some sandpaper that will be a huge help.

Day is the one guy I don’t mind stashing and trying to keep as a long-term project. You don’t just throw away the combo of size, speed, and skill he has. The only full-time U20 AHL defender last year was Liljegren. When you up it to U21, there were 25 defenders with 40+ games played.

He’s a weird case, but his development track isn’t that off from the norm.

If it doesn't prevent us from developing someone else, then why not, but I don't have very high hopes for him at this point

I think Pionk struggled in the first half of last night's game. Got outbattled for the puck on the first goal--though the backchecking forwards lost Lappin. McLeod was chasing Boyle and no one had Lappin. Pionk may have provided a screen on the Quenneville powerplay goal. Go down to block--you need to get a piece of the shot. There were also a few early turnovers.

That said---he was Quinn's go to defenseman last night as testified by his team leading 23+ minutes and he was a lot better in the second half of the game. He also was north of 7 minutes of penalty kill time and got that game winning goal. Not every d-man can handle those kinds of minutes and that's a quality that I'm not sure a lot of people get. With all those minutes he got stronger as the game went along.

DeAngelo got the most power play point time. He's very smooth with the puck and his first pass breakouts from the D zone last night were excellent. He did not make any major defensive errors that I can recall. He was very steady. There was a great breakaway pass to Schneider. There were a couple missed passes on the power play but overall he had a very good game throughout. The other breakaway pass to Schneider by the way was a really nice play by Claesson.

Anyway the Devils were crowding our net a lot last night and generally speaking our D did pretty well. That wasn't a particularly strong Devils teams though. Apart from Hall, Hischier, Bratt and Boyle at forward and Vatanen and Greene on D and Kinkaid's a good goalie--everyone else will be fighting for a job and most of them will not make it.

I'm happy so far. You have a far more decisive coach who is making cuts early. Once the group's whittled down, build up that chemistry.

We have a deeper pool with a number of legitimate prospects, and while the team looks a little disorganized at the moment, things will click as these games go on. Quinn's system makes for more exciting hockey, and you have guys looking like they're taking some steps forward. Lindgren and O'Gara looking more NHL-ready than I expected is a nice plus. Gettinger looked better than I thought he would. DeAngelo looked good, and Lias stepped it up last night. He and Fast play well together--tough to go against.

Hey, Day could go to AHL camp and look great, who knows. He's been around seemingly forever but he's still 20, and not a lot of guys on D make it to the NHL at 20. So, let's hope he does well down there.

My guess, however, based on what I've seen of him over the past couple years, is that he'll be just average, and with the numbers game he'll end up going to Maine where he can play a lot more.

Day is and remains a long-term project.

And as we've discussed, he's not going to be able to get by on pure natural ability now that he's a pro.

It's a long road ahead.

and even if he doesn't pan out it still wasn't a bad idea to take a shot on him as a later round pick

Nieves might be done, as in done with hockey at this point. Too many concussions...

I agree. Though I wouldn't be surprised to see him float around for a couple years trying to find an NHL pay day.

We all know he's going to bust but you're right, he has such a unique skill set you keep him around JUST in case.
