Yup I wiffed on that. Forgot 2020 was the Heineke playoff game. It happens.
Kirk Cousins is 1-3 in the playoffs. 0-1 with DC and 1-2 with MIN. Alex Smith is 2-5 in the playoffs. 1-1 with SF and 1-4 with KC. So the winning argument falls flat doesn’t it? Playoff wins matter most, don’t they?
Kirk Cousins last year as a starter in DC the team went 7-9. His stats were 4093 yards passing with 27/13 TD/INT and 64 com%. He also led the team with 4 rushing TDs. His top 3 receivers were Crowder, Ryan Grant and a 34 year old Vernon Davis. Leading rusher was Perine with 600 yards. And the defense was ranked 28th. The lack of respect Kirk Cousins gets around here is remarkable.
If given the choice between Kirk Cousins and pre leg injury Alex Smith you would pick Alex Smith?
I've conceded that they botched the KC thing entirely. No debate there. But this isn't a binary choice. When KC was gone, they traded a modest sum for an All Pro caliber starting QB with some mileage left. That wasn't a bad trade, or contract, and he did exactly what they wanted from him - stabilize the QB position and win games. That's the only claim I'm making - Alex Smith did great for the Redskins, before and after his injury. That's really not subject to debate. And in the year between his two shortened seasons, they went 3-13. Thats all I'm trying to highlight.
KC had better stats most times, and he won more games than guys like Haskins or Keenum, sure. But KC had a losing record and some of his losses were when he put up big numbers but dreadful INTs late in the game, so there is some deception purely in the numbers. But it was not really a choice between the two once the esteemed Bruce Allen and Dan Bag chased KC out of town.
If I was GM I would have locked up KC in 2016, so there is that. But I'm not Bruce Allen :O
