Redskins let the better version walk and traded for the downgraded model lol….that will never qualify as a good trade for me.

I totally agree with the first half of that sentence and disagree with the second half.

We completely botched the Cousins situation. We had a franchise QB in hand and treated him like shit. But by the time the Smith trade was made the Cousins situation was beyond repair. There was zero chance he'd stay here.

The part we're skipping over in this conversation is that tiny little crucial tidbit that changes everything: No one wanted to play here. No elite QB with any control over where they landed was going to come to DC. The ONLY way for us to get a good, established quarterback was to trade for one.

Given the reality of that situation, getting Smith was a pretty good move. That we didn't put a quality O-line around him greatly contributed to his catastrophic injury, so we can't exactly call that a freak occurence. We did the same thing to Fitzpatrick, then kinda the same thing to Wentz (who would have sucked regardless). That O-line is one of the big reasons this town fell in love with Heinicke -- he was doing great stuff running for his life most of the time.

Us screwing up the Cousins situation and the Smith trade being maybe the best (or only) way for us to get a solid QB under the circumstances are not mutually exclusive ideas.

It’s getting chippy. Good.

Exactly my feeling. I like everything that happened there. I like that St. Juste is popping people, that TM is standing up for his teammate, and that EB is getting in their shit about it. Everyone's doing their job, especially if Cole Turner got fired up in his play after that.

I'm glad football is close and that it's okay to not hate the Skins anymore. I almost subscribed to Wrexham yesterday, and baseball is dumb. I miss sports.

But you’ve always loved Cousins a LOT more than I did. His track record in Minnesota hasn’t exactly let me down either. I expected him to rack up stats and be a .500 QB. Which is pretty much what’s happened.

And you've always tapdanced on Cousins being a choker, which is bullshit. The Redskins team around him was unremarkable at best and he is FAR from the reason Minnesota hasn't won. Cousins has, overall, played pretty damn well in the types of games he gets blamed for choking in.

McAfee's show illustrated part of this really well a few days ago...

He gets blamed for stuff that isn't on him, and certainly isn't only on him. Calling him a choker or a "can't win the big game" guy is the same horseshit they threw at Marino and Elway for years and years. Sometimes you've got an elite QB carrying your team so far on his back that you lose sight of the fact that it's damn near impossible for him to take you the whole way by himself.

Now I'm not saying that Cousins is Elway or Marino, but what I do like about him very much in this situation is that he just takes the blame. He owns it without any real pushback because that's what leaders do. He's a pretty great QB and an exceptional character guy and leader.

And we let him go because he asked for a deal that would have been an absolute steal in 2 years, and countered with offers that were just plain insulting.

I'm over it, but the revisionist history and continued skewed perspective on Cousins is pretty silly. I'm just glad that (hopefully) the clown show is over in DC and maybe we can attract better players now that the wicked witch is dead.

10-40 against teams w a winning record. 2 franchises.

Also — a large part of Minnesota’s problems are that they *cannot* put a better team around him (especially the defense) because he costs Too Much Damn Money for his worth to the team.

My problem w KC was always that. “Not enough bang for the buck”. It’s what I’ve always felt. And it’s gotten worse as he’s many almost what…40m a year now or something?

But you are right sir, this is a topic I shouldn’t be pushing (Altho Mr Hog is the one that generally brings it up :naughty:)

Well they could have had him for extremely few bucks, and he'd have wildly outperformed his cap hit. But Allen and Snyder could give a Fletcher/Milbury management duo a run for their money as worst ever.

Nah, there wasn't a world where Kirk was re-signing in Washington for any dollar amount.

He literally thought getting drafted here was a test of faith from God. He was mad we dared draft Griffin, or give him a shot, before him.

f*** that its the offseason .. Kirk was and is a decent starting QB in this league. You either have a competent QB or you suck and dont. We dont have one bc Kirk wasnt flashy enough for all the "hes not Aaron Rodgers" mother f***ers out there. Just like yall shitting on Chase Young and you dont see you a potential All Pro player coming into his prime.

Kirk's problem is that he is a computer. Hes process oriented and can process pre snap and post snap quickly but he is also predictable.

A team can take advantage of his predicatbale computer like thinking by baiting him into a thinking his pre read is correct but then you drop a DE back into coverage and Kirk will throw the ball right to him when his reciever runs a shallow cross bc his pre read process thinking says DE doesnt drop back.

If we didnt run Kirk out when we did .. this fanbase would have a year or 2 later bc we didnt win the SB.

Having Kirk and Trent would make this team a legitimate contender I think. Of course, if they had Kirk and Trent they wouldn’t have other players on the roster that they do have since a lot of money would be tied up to those two guys. Really, who knows what the roster looks like in an alternate reality where Danny and Bruce aren’t total dickheads and they don’t drive out high performers. Driving them out and continuing to trot out a shitty product didn’t hurt the effort to get Danny to sell so if losing KC and TW was just another drop in the bucket that eventually overflowed and drowned Danny then I’m fine with that trade off.

Cousins is like Trotz, some people will never let it go.

As of December 2022 Cousins is 10-40 in his career against winning teams. For context, Dak is 22-25. It’s hard to have a winning record vs good teams but Cousins is all-time bad against good teams.
I don’t have Cousins posters on my wall and I don’t have a Cousins jersey I sleep in at night. He’s a 2nd tier QB who is currently overpaid.

My beef is the fact he is a 2nd tier QB who has missed 2 games since he became a full time starter in 2015, set the all time passing record in DC, my favorite team (who has been without a legit starting QB since 1985) drafted Cousins in the 4th round and then ran him out of town. And the same people on here that shit on him now were the same people who basically cheered and approved the way the team treated him back then. That’s my beef.

The hate for the guy baffles and annoys the shit out of me. The guy wanted 20 mil a year for 5 years after 2016. 2 mil a year more than what Brock Osweiller got in Houston. And people on here lost their shit. Why? Because he didn’t win enough. Yeah and how much winning has taken place since he left?

It’s comical at this point. Whenever I read comments on here bashing him it reminds me of that scene in Shawshank when Andy calls the Warden obtuse. Maybe that’s how I’ll respond to those comments from now.

Chicken and egg protocol enabled!

Seriously though….the WR isn’t breaking out without a good QB performance to get it to him.
McLaurin broke out. Dotson could do same?

I’m not disagreeing with you. But it’s far easier when you have WR’s creating space or winning 50/50 balls …. To see the QB “break out”, right?

Same token, it’s far easier for a WR to break out if you have a guy that can thread the needle and/or hit the open man.

So, yeah. They can mutually help each other, IMO. One can hope
