TBH the hockey media in this market throws d-men under the bus a lot.

To be fair to this market, it’s not like we’ve been watching a steady parade of Norris winners over the years and we just don’t appreciate them.

Historically Toronto has not been blessed with those types of defensemen.

Leafs are a team grandma woukd have over to bake some cookies. They will offer to do a few chores around the house, show off their juggling skills or some other offbeat act while grandma claps with glee. Genuinely nice, safe corporate players.

Love this...

Keep it real, though... Dude's been awful. This isn't controversial or fringe. At all.. in the slightest.. even for this site. You know, if I want to be fringe or controversial for real - I would instead ask who the common denominator is for all the Leafs losing you can name in the last 2 regimes? There's only one guy that's been there for both. He just got that stink on him, unfortunately. I would trade him for almost anything in the NHL for that reason alone - but especially his equivalent perceived value in LW. He strikes me as the guy that welcomes every new leaf with any ounce of spunk into the room and tells 'em, "hey bud - just chill - it's nice here - we have everything.. don't make us look bad. Just play the role, put on a show - and we'll go home to our lady friends. Sound good?" Too bad Van doesnt have a good enough LW, cuz Mr "I'll take the easy road for $1000 Alex" would only leave this cushy org for one closer to his upbringing probably. I mean, only Morgs would take such a perceived discount to return to this hellhole of losing - even the young guys know better than that.

But I wouldn't say all that. Just the first 2 paragraphs.

This has to be on the table. If a trade comes that will push us over the top and it takes Rielly to do it, I don't care how "fan-friendly" or "likeable" he is. If Derozan could be moved, Rielly can be moved.

I argued against it for a bit, but I don't know how I can defend him anymore. He somehow looks worse off the puck and he still doesn't know how to defend an odd-man rush. Bad pinches game after game, this team played such a strong defensive structure when he was out. I put him in the same category as Sergachev/Hughes/Karlsson. They only want to play offence and generate scoring chances, slightly inflated numbers due to PP opportunities and playing with other skill guys. He'll make horrible defensive decisions, low percentage plays, to try and create a chance offensively that more times than not backfires.

We can't win with this version of Rielly, 1 of 2 things needs to happen.

1) Rielly commits to playing a strong defensive structure like the rest of the guys do. The team has bought into Keefe's system, it seems like Rielly is not committing himself. Either that or the coaching staff has told him, he's allowed to pinch repeatedly, cheat with positioning and make low percentage plays in order to create a scoring chance.

2) He's moved for a D-man that commits himself to putting team defense first, playing a smart game with high percentage plays.

If Rielly had Brodies IQ/mindset he would be a norris nominee ever year, but the lack of commitment to defence seems to be getting worse by the day and I honestly cannot defend him anymore. Something needs to change. Either he needs to adjust his game, or we need to adjust our roster and create one where everybody buys into the system.

At 7.5M, it's a big price and while I do love some skill/speed on the back end, I tend to like 2-way types more.

I know he's been off for a while but I don't think he's improved defensively since Moose Jaw.

This Leafs team has been great defensively for years, and it's been completely unappreciated and unrecognized by a large portion of this market. Too busy making Holl and Rielly scapegoats for everything, and absolving goalies of all blame.

Which goalies do you blame? Current ones?

Rielly is sort of the hockey reincarnation of Bryan Berard. Offensive minded defenseman with excellent skating who was a little bit loose on the structure side, though Berard was still putting it together at 22-23 when he suffered his eye injury, whereas Rielly has kind of plateaued in development on the defensive side of the game from the looks of things.
From what I remember about Berard, at least he had a bit of a cannon from the point. Rielly has only a feather weight shot from the point.

Is he our Tyson Barrie now? Maybe he can be packaged with Kerfoot and get back a gritty top-6 scorer (like Kadri), a young defenceman (like Rosen) and a 3rd round pick like the Colorado GM did.

Similarity scores through 10 years, a lot of OK but not spectacular players, in general you can say they were serviceable players through their careers, I see a couple of players who won awards/notoriety in their peak years.

Morgan is the type of guy that you trade if some dummy GM comes to you and offers the moon for him, like (3) 1st rounders from a rebuilding club but if not he's the kind of guy that can be useful and has a reasonable contract.

Would a Jakob Chychrun for Morgan Rielly make sense? You see what a healthy Jakob Chychrun can do. 18 points in 22 games this year. I doubt Arizona would do that deal they are looking to trade JC because of cap hit, Morgan has a bigger one.

It interesting to see that when you compare them head to head, JC beats MR in most categories. the knock against JC , is that he is thought to be injury prone, it's not like MR has been an Ironman.

Has a player ever signed an 8 year deal with full NMC and waived it in the first year so he could be traded?

Thinking he’ll be moved is pretty unrealistic at this point.

It's a good point but there has never been a contract that you can't break.

With that said Willie, AM, and Mitch are all due soon, do the Leafs want to send a message to your big three that contracts don't mean anything? Not a good look TBH.

As a management team - they need to stop giving NMC’s.

I would trade Rielly in a heart beat for a 2LW or 3C.

From what I remember about Berard, at least he had a bit of a cannon from the point. Rielly has only a feather weight shot from the point.

I don't remember it being a cannon aka McCabe, but it wasn't a muffin for sure.

I’m sure there are tons of contracts that couldn’t be broke.

The Leafs collective media and fanbase would have chased out more goalies over the years than Norris Trophy level defensemen if we're keeping track.

As far as Rielly is concerned, isn't the simplest answer for him to just play better? Give us a 10 pack of games where you're quiet as a mouse defensively, and don't be a hero on offense when it's not a smart time to pinch. Don't circle the offensive zone uselessly like you're looking for a parking space in a crowded lot.

Why are you comparing all goalies to exclusively "Norris Trophy level defensemen"?
I mean, this market likes irrationally chasing out all kinds of players, but defensemen definitely get it the worst.

Lol. "Just play better". What great insight. :eyeroll:
Rielly hasn't even been playing bad, and suggesting he's "trying to be a hero", or that he's "circling the offensive zone uselessly" is just flat-out wrong.
Rielly hasn't even been one of our more aggressive defensemen since coming back from injury, and your suggestion to neuter his strengths doesn't help the team.

Morgan Rielly is a good hockey player.

Toronto hockey fans are dumb dumbs, this is a non-story.
He's good offensively, but badly needs to improve defensively. He's not playing like a #1 Dman, not even a 1B which is what we need him to be.

He's literally playing like a slightly better version of Tyson Barrie, it's not going to cut it. Not for 7.5M

This is absolutely a story, this team looked completely different in the games he was out. There was a real structure and it was consistent. Now since he came back there's been some huge mistakes and coincidentally he's been on for pretty much every single on of them. He's always out of position, pinches on the blue line even when he doesn't have a winger to support him and somehow still has not learned how to defend an odd-man rush.
