This team is not fundamentally sound and hasn't been for some time. Team defense is atrocious, they are so careless with the puck and this has been a consistent problem throughout AV's tenure. I've hated man-to-man defense since it was first implemented in 2013 and it's astounding that this system is still being used.

Aside from the coaching, the players just aren't that good. Kreider will never be the player many thought he would be and should have been traded years ago, Hayes isn't improving, Miller is ok, Nash is done, McD has never regained 2013-14 form. The core of this team is mediocre at best. I know the Rangers have overcome slow starts in years past, but it really feels like this team is destined to miss the playoffs.

This is a very good summary of the state of affairs.

Trade McDonagh to really tank it.

Then pray we win the lottery. Break #1 that has to go our way.

We win it. Now we take Dahlin first overall who is a LHD.

Now pray Dahlin is as good as McDonagh. Major break #2 that has to go our way.

And then if he is, all we've done is replace McDonagh several years down the line.

You've gouged Peter's eyes out just so Paul can be standing there in the same spot Peter was standing in.

Just looked at the ice time and the clown actually played Staal and Holden under ten minutes each. However, he still needs to go. Completely disregarding the fact that the team is void of the right players in its top 9, this looks like a case of a team that has quit on its coach.

They’re too talented to be 1-5. They lost Step, G, Lindberg and Raanta, that turns them from a 100pt team to this? It really shouldn’t

Kreider should have been traded? He was excellent last year and likely will be again this year when all is said and done. I know the team is terrible right now but that’s just silly.
The fact that they are 1-5 means they are not too talented to be 1-5.

They might win the next five in a row but right now they suck.

Vally just said the first period was the total opposite of the second. That is because NJ adjusted to what the Rangers were doing. That's what a strategic thinking coach does. AV isn't that coach. A strategic coach would have been prepared for the Devils' adjustment and had another plan in mind. There were a lot of things that AV did well in his first seasons here but now I think the players find him stale. He had a long shelf life in Vancouver. Watching his presser tonight I almost feel bad for the guy.

It's better than spinning in circles of mediocrity.

All it takes is getting that one franchise talent and it changes the entire organization. Once you get that guy at the top, the rest figures it's self out. It's why the Patriots are able to churn out highly useful player after highly useful player.

It takes luck to get a franchise talent, not a #1 pick.

Being terrible every year is not better than being mediocre every year.

We already have the best defenseman we've had since Leetch. To trade him just to get another McDonagh (which is what Dahlin probably is) is extremely foolish.

Disagree. The patriots success offensively is 80% bill belichecks genius route schemes and coaching. Having Brady doesn’t hurt but a lot of that is coaching. Perfect analogy though

But the mystery is what kind of haul can they get for McDonagh.

in theory you get another McDonagh and whatever you actually get for McDonagh. High risk high reward. I don’t like it

Is it though? Kreider scored 29 goals last year. Did anyone realistically think he'd be anything more than a 30 goal power forward? He is what we thought he'd be.

I think people were hoping for a Milan Lucic type impact guy.
