New IIHF world ranking 2022

Who do you see as the Finn goalies in 2 years? Saros... (note: I'm not arguing, I'm curious)
Apart from Saros, who already is elite, we basically now have Husso, too. He's more or less benched Binnington in St. Louis, and since he's a pending UFA, it's quite given that he won't sign anywhere except to a team willing to give him a starter position and starter money. The third most likely is Luukkonen; Buffalo has all but stated that they're grooming him to be their next one. Finally, Kähkönen looks like he will at least be a solid journeyman goalie, with potential starter upside.

I expect Lankinen and Korpisalo (though as a 1994-born, he doesn't quite fit the "latter half of the 90s" criteria) to stick around the league as well, but I won't make any bold predictions about their status a year or two from now.

Russia and Belarus both receive ranking points for this year's world championship.
Russia and Belarus were expelled from competing in the 2022 World Championships because of their invasion of Ukraine. They were, however, granted the points of the positions they would have been seeded based on their 2021 ranking: Russia in 3rd place received 1120 points, and Belarus in 14th place received 860 points. Several nations withdrew from the 2022 World Championships over COVID-19 concerns. These nations similarly received the points of the positions they would have been seeded within their respective tournaments: Australia as 2nd place in IIA received 560 points, New Zealand as 3rd place in IIB received 440 points, North Korea as 1st place in IIIA received 360 points, Hong Kong as 2nd place in IIIB received 220 points, and the Philippines as 4th place in IV received 100 points. This implies that when Russia is eventually allowed back into international competitions, they will be granted a direct spot in the top division.

Evidently the IIHF is drooling for Russia's return and definitely doesn't want them to spend years in lower divisions.

Well the IIHF needs to be called out by hopefully most of the top 20-25 teams: WE WILL NOT ACCEPT RUSSIA PARTICIPATING and refuse to play against them in the foreseeable future

People complaining about the ranking. There is no bias here, you are being subjective. Its maths, only results matter. It is the only way IIHF can make a ranking. It can not be based on one random tournament, number of NHL players or a best-on-best tournament many years ago. About countries who did not participate its a different thing.

Put Ukraine as #1 while you are at it. Why not? Nobody gives a shit about sports, just politics
The fact that Russia got the points as if they won bronze, despite not participating is all about politics, isn't it? They should have been awarded no points.

Isn't the ranking based on the latest games over a determined period of time? If Russia is excluded long enough their ranking should fall to the very bottom.

Another thing is that since they have been expelled they shouldn't even be included in the rankings.

When Czechoslovakia split, Czechia continued with the ranking of Czechoslovakia and Slovakia got 0 points and got sent to C division, where probably a more fair approach would have been Slovakia getting the same amount of points.
I understand that having Russia return back to A division is better for hockey when we're in times of peace and redemption, but it does put it as a bad precedence given to what happened to Slovakia in the past.

Not only Slovakia was treated that way. Also Latvia and Estonia and ex USSR countries.

Reading the reactions of Russians (Fetissov and others) makes me think that cancelling them is absolutely right and sending them as deep down would be only right thing. These comments give me the feeling that they fully support the events in Ukraine. And seeing Russia as a hockey team in Division III a bigger issue than people being killed in Ukraine makes me sick.

Looking at this rationally, none of this point stuff matter. As things stand, Russia will not be utilizing them anytime soon.

There should be a 10 year ban for both and then they can work their way up the many divisions.

but we'll take it year by year, I suppose. It was a great tournament this year. best in years. and they were not missed.

world ranking didn't even exist back then. It was introduced later. But yes, Slovakia was sent to what was then known as Pool C. On the other hand, we were given a chance to qualify for the 94 Olympics, which we did.

Finland lost one period in that tournament.

I won a maths debate.
