What are they gonna do, not play? No, they won’t accept any relegation.

Well then they'll continue to be irrelevant.Correct.
Better than being subjugated and humiliated to play in a lower level division when players and officials did not do anything that was deserving such treatmentWell then they'll continue to be irrelevant.
Everything that Russia is involved in as a nation will be affected for years - maybe a decade. Sports isn’t any kind of exception. Don’t expect Russia to be accepted in any international sports for a really long time. And that’s of course how it should be.Better than being subjugated and humiliated to play in a lower level division when players and officials did not do anything that was deserving such treatment
I can sympathize with some of the players to a certain degree, but officials? Hockey federation boss Tretiak is a deputy of the ruling United Russia party. Fetisov as well, not to mention employed by the Ministry of Defense. Chairman Rotenberg an oligarch and one of Putin's closest personal friends. IIHF Council member Bure one of several current and former players that belong to the political action group Team Putin. These are people that need to be gone before anything can change.Better than being subjugated and humiliated to play in a lower level division when players and officials did not do anything that was deserving such treatment

So you probably have no idea what hockey means to Russia. It is a sport where there is much less competition than in football and Russia is a strong hockey country. Virtually every government in Russia has preferred hockey as a thing of the world to show Russia and the former Soviet Union an invincible country that they only take gold in every tournament. I think Putin only plays exhibition matches in hockey, not football. Rotenberg is a close friend of his, hockey and stadium repairs cost millions of dollars, hockey is more popular than football. Also because the success of Soviet football is long forgotten. Lev Yashin was a legendary goalkeeper, I think he even won the golden ball. And if you ask the ten greatest athletes of Russia / Soviet Union in Russia, there will be at least seven hockey players. I don't even have to write how prestigious Russians take the number of gold medals compared to Canada. After all, in the past, sport was considered a showcase of the regime in many communist countries, it was the only way to show that there is something better in the East than in the West. People like Tretyak or Fetisov are former players from the Soviet era and their word has great weight in Russia. In addition, they are still popular with people, the older generation perceives them as those who have confirmed their dominance over hockey. If Fetisov says that Russia's exclusion is unfair, the Russians will agree with him and will not think at all that Russia is doing the wrong thing to Ukraine. Russia has driven itself into isolation, so it can also wonder why no one wants to compete with them and play hockey. They just have to overcome the guilt and admit that they have nothing to do with Ukraine and the whole war was nonsense. But their view will be that the evil West is to blame for every punishment.Better than being subjugated and humiliated to play in a lower level division when players and officials did not do anything that was deserving such treatment
