How Dave Rogalski still has a job is beyond me. Not a single goaltender has looked NHL level under him. Not a single friggin' one.
Especially considering all the other assistants got fired last year, but they kept the one guy whose position performed the least efficiently of all. I know maybe they wanted to blame the goalie thing last year on the top two guys getting hurt and everyone else being desperation patches but still.
I think it’s worth seeing how another NHL goalie plays here, because there weren’t any that had ever been NHL caliber for long term, other than Blackwood and Bernier. Actually, not even Blackwood, as he was only even in the league for two years before he came in. And Bernier was hurt 10 games in.

But guys like Gillies have never had any NHL success. Aaron Dell had such a short shelf life, just like a Keith Kinkaid and it had expired by the time he ever played here. Wedgewood never had NHL success before last season, other than his 4 games in 15-16. And even last year he was merely average and was 29 years old.

Hammond had about year’s worth of success, but had washed out of the league by 2016.

So it probably can’t be confirmed quite yet, but firing Melanson was no good. It was fixing something that wasn’t broken.

Looking like a big fat swing and miss on that one from Marty.

I’ve been saying this since Cory stopped being a good goalie, but I wonder if he ever be interested in coming aboard? I think he could be a good resource here on the goalie committee or even as a goalie coach. He’s still playing pro hockey this year, so it’s a conversation for this off-season at the earliest.

I've gone to every home opener since 2008, the only more deflating losses I can remember are WPG 2019/2020, Isles 2013/2014 when they lost in a long shootout and tonight. Devils arguably had their best crowd of the season and played like that. I'm a massive Severson fan for a long time but the guy just simply has no brain or hockey IQ to go along with his skills. Marino on the fourth goal was one of the worst thing I've seen too. Pull the plug on Ruff and promote Brunette asap.

Sucks Vanaceck got lit up but literally 4 of the 5 goals were very good to literally perfectly placed shots.

There was a moment in the 2nd where Jack had a mini 1 on 1 with the goalie and couldn't get the goal. He's buzzed at times in both games and could easily have a few points. Jack makes 8 million a year now so he has to step his game up. The same can be said for alot of players though after the first 2 games. Atleast Wood scored a goal tonight after basically calling the team out.

It's one game, but if Vancek doesn't pick it up, massive failure by Fitz this offseason. There were better goalie options to be had
I doubt there was better realistic options.

Kuemper, Campbell was always going to pick playoff teams.
Vanecek is better than Samsonov.

You could argue that perhaps Husso is better, but he would be still be a risk given his limited track record. But as things as panned out we were outbid/can't afford him anyway with the current roster. If we sign Husso at his current cap hit, then Palat probably doesn't get signed and Johnsson still on the team.

There was no good goalie move this offseason. Especially if you believe the goaltending is partially a result of systems, in which case you would be (massively) overpaying for goalies who looked good on vastly better squads/systems.

The team should be more competitive but they certainly haven't found their goalie of the future yet. Depends on if and how badly we miss this year, but I don't think we'll have a true starter for a while.

Yeah, a tough one. But process-wise, I would take it as encouraging. The balance of chances was very largely tilted toward the Devils. Vitek just got beat on some perfect/random shots, and some very bad defensive decisions.

The positive is maybe if they go 0-3 to start, Ruff gets sacked with enough time to make the playoffs.

Does anyone know what „the system“ is that Ruff preaches, and if there is sth about it that doesn’t work (any more?) with opponents?

the system is called "let the kids skate" it isn't a system per say, instead up to each individual player use their skill to decide what to do.

1. Goaltending gave up bad goals

2. Team is constantly making mistakes they shouldn't. Look rough around the edges against a team on a back to back. Ruff doesn't have them ready to play

3. Severson and Graves specifically were dreadful tonight
Ruff then should scratch graves. Ruff isn’t tough enough coach. Tortotella. Gallant. Etc. Would scratch vets who playing bad. Instead we leave Bahl out of lineup in place of smith or graves. Graves was horrendous in game one I wasn’t tuned in as much last night was out so bench hom hold him accountable . Tartar takes an awful penalty yet he is right back out there in the pp and I believe made a key bad play on a goal. He won’t be scratched.

I could actually see this being a quick whacking (especially if they get embarrassed by the Ducks Tuesday)...lot of home games this month, an uber-frustrated fanbase and management themselves clearly wasn't sold on the man anyway having him be a lame duck with an assistant that has wattage on the bench.

Lindy should have been let go at the end of last season. He should not have started this season. He's already a lame duck coach with his replacement in house. We will probably have to wait like 20 games for it to happen this year. This is from 12/2/21:

I have to say that one thing at least remains consistent :

HersheyBob, and Jersey Fan 12's continual dunking on Jesper Bratt.

Some of the comments I read (as I missed this game...thankfully, as it turned out) in the GDT thread would've pissed me off if they weren't so absurd that it made me laugh instead.

Oh and DevilDoggo is now RangerDoggo? Haha WTF?

Don't feed the trolls mate.

So if you count last season’s finish this is 8 straight losses for this team and coach…

It's only game 2 bro! Don't overreact!!

One of the most hilarious things is looking at the boxscore and seeing that Sharangovich had 10:56 of icetime including 2:32 shorthanded...so you trust the dude to play shorthanded but not at even strength?! Not to mention his whopping nine seconds of power play time lol
Is Ruff fired yet? :(

He's putting on a clinic on how NOT to coach an NHL team.

Yup, we have 7 games left this month, 5 of them being at home. It's only gonna get uglier if they don't turn this ship around or just fire Ruff.

Not only that but you'd have to give them at least a 5 year contract. 5 years is a long time for olderish goalies. It can go south quick. At least with vanecek if he is a backup it's for not crazy term and money.

There was no good goalie move this offseason.
We've known goaltending was a problem since last Thanksgiving. Fitz decided to wait until deadline day to acquire Hammond.

Then he trades for a backup on a good team and people are surprised that he's not playing like a starter for us.

Zero excuses for Fitzgerald.

I'm a big part of the generation of fans that started those chants. Now I'm starting to regret it. Plus the end is way too tacky and classless.
The entire thing is.

I think this goaltender situation with us is like a football team with a bad offensive line. In our case the offensive line is the system or something internal with the team. Regardless of how good the QB is, if the O-line isn't any good the team won't win.

That’s exactly the problem with some of you.

Too many of you are under the influence of the Blackwood dust.

Hey, you remember when you were one of the people who thought I was so insane for saying Cory wouldn’t bounce back? Who was right then?

Remember, I don’t take it personally, but I remember who thought I was so wrong. I remember names. That’s why I’m such a pompous asshole about Cory, about Keith Kinkaid and about this current shit head.

He’s the worst player on the team at the most important position.

He sucks. He deserves any booing and he deserves this avatar.

You know why? Because he’s shit. And he sucks.

The end.
You were wrong about buying out Schneider. We're still paying him now, and if we bought him out earlier, we'd be paying him for even longer. So good for you that you remember names, but the ability to remember names doesn't mean the moves you propose make sense for the team.

And do yourself, and this board a favor and change your avatar. It's embarrassing.
