I was more against the change on principle, especially with how it happened. But now that it's happened and the Devils have gone public with why, it's time to freaking move on. Our fanbase is being a bunch of crying babies. The goalhorn changed too, why weren't there protests over that? People are acting like this is 'taxation without representation' and let's throw the tea overboard!
I don't want to single you out but this attempt to trivialize the goal song is a very small example of how a lot of fans here have a tendency to seemingly disregard the merits of an opposing (maybe unfamiliar?) viewpoint. I'll reiterate, again, that I'm somewhere in the middle. While I'm very upset with the way the Devils are handling the situation, I'm ok with the change as long as we get something good that we can chant to - so I'm not coming from any sort of bias when I say this.
Calling someone who doesn't see the world like you do "a crying baby" is pretty childish in its own right. And I hate to single you out, you're a great poster and make great points but I wish you would - at the very least - acknowledge that people can feel strongly about things you feel are insignificant. And just because you feel these things are insignificant (or maybe insignificant is a bad word, maybe trivial or unimportant) doesn't mean these things really are insignificant.
I mean if you really want to send a message just don't go. Don't ruin the atmosphere for everyone else that is. Even if you guys 'win', it'll be a total phyrric victory. You'll have your half-minute goalsong and in the process completely turn our fanbase into a laughingstock and turn off a huge segment of your own fanbase. Being in a petty fight with the owners isn't worth fan-on-fan civil war that's going to destroy any home-ice advantage.
Not going certainly sends a powerful message. But booing the goal song repeatedly sends a very powerful message as well. It shows that the nonsensical excuse that a majority of the fanbase doesn't like the goal song is ********. This wont ignite a "fan civil war." The split is very much 80/20 at the very best. It's likely more than that.
Owners do things that fans don't like all the time, I've never heard of a total fan revolt the likes of which are in the air for anything including ticket price raising which is a heck of a lot more important to all fans.
Oh it happens in college all the time. It's happened in football too. It happens a lot with these "traditions" and not so much with money because, believe it or not, fans really do get into these traditions. I read the facebook comments for laughs last night and some of the comments really showed the connection some of these fans have with the song. Chanting it when they were 3, associating the song with Cup wins or even most recently the Henrique goal - these moments are made a bit more special (to some) by that song.
Look - we're still a very young franchise. We're just now seeing a growth in our fanbase (necessary growth). You give the fans what they want. Are we immature as a whole? Maybe. But that's what happens when you build a fanbase in New Jersey in 2013. The kids going to the games now pay the bills a lot more than you or anyone else. And they will pay the bills going forward. It's bad business to pull the song period. Pull it when it's closer to a 50/50 split.
No tradition will be a tradition that 100% of the fans are proud of. One of the reasons I'm not 100% for a new song is the tall task of starting a new one. It sets the franchise back 20 years.
I rather have our "sophmoric" goal song and have it be something that stands the test of time. Have it be something that I can tell my grandkids I chanted X number of years ago.
