This is just like what happened to the Red Bulls. On goal kicks they used to chant "You Suck, Ass-Hole!" (YSA chant)....until they were forced to stop.

I keep hearing people say that we should just turn the cheek the other way and accept what the owners are shoving down our throats.

I don't agree with that. We CAN get our goal song back, but you have to be prepared to be unwavering and unbreakable. Accept no alternative. The owners would rather give us our song back than hear us boo every home game goal. And the owners would certainly rather give us our song back than take a major hit at the box office and on season ticket renewals.

Viva la revolution.

And boy, Saturday will be fun to watch. I hope the chants deafen Mr. Weber's innocent little ears.

In some Canadian cities, they riot and overturn- burn cars if they don't win a playoff series.

Nj fans are classier than them regardless of chanting to a goal song. Just keep it

Saturday night was to be about the Devils beating a rival Rangers Team but now Saturday night is about a goal song and freedom of speech with chants like "You Suck", "Flyers Swallow" and "Rangers Suck"

Stupid timing by the Devils in my opinion but it does take the heat off scoring enough goals to beat the Rangers.

I bet I will hear "Devils Suck" Saturday night.

This is what I find so funny about the owners' poorly rationalized argument about us being disrespectful. Now, fans are going to be even more disrespectful purely out of spite. It's going to be glorious. :handclap:

I don't get why this is such a line in the sand where we have to scorch the earth. You realize how absolutely ridiculous our fanbase is going to look by openly engaging in civil war over something that in the end is pretty freaking trivial? I mean we're talking about a minute of the game for every two goals.

There's honestly been more kvetching over this than there would be if ticket prices got raised across the board 25%. ****, my ticket prices got raised 25% from last year to this year but I'm supposed to give two ***** about a goal song? This gong show is just showing where our fanbase's priorities lie and I don't really like what I'm hearing.

our biggest turn-away right now is totally the goal song. not the inability to win

in the grand scheme of things, what isn't trivial about a hockey game?

the goal song change is just one more thing to piss people off. If the Devils come back winless, you may get some "Pete must go" chants and real booing of the Devils due to their on ice performance

Trivial to some, not all. Just because it's trivial to you doesn't mean it's not worth pursuing. A lot of memories can be tied to the song for a lot of people and I respect the passion of those who will fight the change.

Though I don't share the same connection, I can certainly understand that this isn't something that's universally trivial or insignificant.

It resulted in official statements from Lou, Hugh, and the owners.

If Devils fans are so great, they should be able to come up with something clever for any goal song played. Something that doesn't make us look like idiots when down in a game.

I was more against the change on principle, especially with how it happened. But now that it's happened and the Devils have gone public with why, it's time to freaking move on. Our fanbase is being a bunch of crying babies. The goalhorn changed too, why weren't there protests over that? People are acting like this is 'taxation without representation' and let's throw the tea overboard!

I mean if you really want to send a message just don't go. Don't ruin the atmosphere for everyone else that is. Even if you guys 'win', it'll be a total phyrric victory. You'll have your half-minute goalsong and in the process completely turn our fanbase into a laughingstock and turn off a huge segment of your own fanbase. Being in a petty fight with the owners isn't worth fan-on-fan civil war that's going to destroy any home-ice advantage.

Owners do things that fans don't like all the time, I've never heard of a total fan revolt the likes of which are in the air for anything including ticket price raising which is a heck of a lot more important to all fans.

Worst argument ever.

Why even bother playing a goal song when we are down? What arbitrary line is there before it's acceptable to not jeer a team or play a song?

The irony is if fans want to revolt against the goal song by not going to games, and it actually impacts attendance long term, it will probably result in some ticket price reductions and open up the game even more to families and new fans not familiar with the chant.

Could be a controlled burn in effect.

Reddit is voting for Howl so theres a chance it will be one of the final 3

This is what's going to ruin the vote. Gaslight Anthem is retweeting people saying "I don't even know what sport the Devils play, but I'm voting for Gaslight Anthem." It's just going to be a bunch of fanboys for a mediocre band ruining our goal song. This is why we can't have nice things.

On a side note, "Howl" sounds like a mid-90's Goo Goo Dolls song that a depressed teenager would listen to. I get that he says "hey" 50 times in a minute, but the song has no energy.

The arbitrary line is that the goal song is played to celebrate a goal, not to deride the opponent. Not that I care about the opposing team's "feelings", but it's pretty bush league to taunt the other team if they are kicking our ass. What's so difficult to understand about that?

This whole fiasco and uproar is ridiculous. Yes the team handled it badly, but to make it this big of a deal is kind of a joke. I love the song and wish it wouldn't change, but I can understand why management would want to change it as well.

Poor attendance and backlash like this can have some serious long-term negative effects on a small market organization like the NJD. In the grand scheme of things, do we really want to risk that kind of damage to the team we supposedly love over a ****ing goal song?

yeah, management is definitely taking an unnecessary risk for no reason - I question their judgement

Exactly. Whose to say that this isn't *THE* Plan of the owners? Getting rid of the so-called rowdy fans and replacing them with other families...

They are trying to turn a Hockey environment into Disney-Land. :help:

I don't want to single you out but this attempt to trivialize the goal song is a very small example of how a lot of fans here have a tendency to seemingly disregard the merits of an opposing (maybe unfamiliar?) viewpoint. I'll reiterate, again, that I'm somewhere in the middle. While I'm very upset with the way the Devils are handling the situation, I'm ok with the change as long as we get something good that we can chant to - so I'm not coming from any sort of bias when I say this.

Calling someone who doesn't see the world like you do "a crying baby" is pretty childish in its own right. And I hate to single you out, you're a great poster and make great points but I wish you would - at the very least - acknowledge that people can feel strongly about things you feel are insignificant. And just because you feel these things are insignificant (or maybe insignificant is a bad word, maybe trivial or unimportant) doesn't mean these things really are insignificant.

Not going certainly sends a powerful message. But booing the goal song repeatedly sends a very powerful message as well. It shows that the nonsensical excuse that a majority of the fanbase doesn't like the goal song is ********. This wont ignite a "fan civil war." The split is very much 80/20 at the very best. It's likely more than that.

Owners do things that fans don't like all the time, I've never heard of a total fan revolt the likes of which are in the air for anything including ticket price raising which is a heck of a lot more important to all fans.

Oh it happens in college all the time. It's happened in football too. It happens a lot with these "traditions" and not so much with money because, believe it or not, fans really do get into these traditions. I read the facebook comments for laughs last night and some of the comments really showed the connection some of these fans have with the song. Chanting it when they were 3, associating the song with Cup wins or even most recently the Henrique goal - these moments are made a bit more special (to some) by that song.

Look - we're still a very young franchise. We're just now seeing a growth in our fanbase (necessary growth). You give the fans what they want. Are we immature as a whole? Maybe. But that's what happens when you build a fanbase in New Jersey in 2013. The kids going to the games now pay the bills a lot more than you or anyone else. And they will pay the bills going forward. It's bad business to pull the song period. Pull it when it's closer to a 50/50 split.

No tradition will be a tradition that 100% of the fans are proud of. One of the reasons I'm not 100% for a new song is the tall task of starting a new one. It sets the franchise back 20 years.

I rather have our "sophmoric" goal song and have it be something that stands the test of time. Have it be something that I can tell my grandkids I chanted X number of years ago.

You ignored my point. His argument was "it's stupid to chant 'you suck' when we're down!" It's a very weak argument. Every team in the league plays their goal song when they score whether they're up 50 or down 50. It's played. Chanting "you suck" at a team that's beating the Devils isn't any worse than the Rangers blaring their goal song down 5-1.

This whole fiasco and uproar is ridiculous. Yes the team handled it badly, but to make it this big of a deal is kind of a joke. I love the song and wish it wouldn't change, but I can understand why management would want to change it as well.

I've beat the horse dead on this already. So I'll just direct you to my post above. I feel that way about this section of your post.

When it's something that YOU care about being changed, you'll change your tune. If booing the goal song or not going to games is going to have a "serious long-term negative effect" on the Devils - if that's a possibility - than our idiotic management should have realized this and NOT changed the song right now.

After losing Kovy, Parise, Clarkson, sucking, and having a ****** product on the ice.

And again a few things are lost in this discussion. You have a guy who was here less than a month change a goal song that he knew nothing about. You also have the team state it was profane and that's why it had to go - we all know that's going to back fire.

Like it or not the fans are going to be more profane.

When you get backlash like this you BACK OFF. Try again later.

I guess things like this become a priority when your team stinks. Seriously, NJD is now the sole winless team in the league and even if there currently were no issues with the goal song, where in the world do we have ANY right to say any team sucks right now? I understand it's just a goal song and I'm honestly not trying to be too serious about it, but really, we sound crazy chanting this right now. Right there is the real issue with the song imho. A good deal of the time, it doesn't make any ****ing sense! I don't get offended by "you suck", but it just feels out of place way too often.

I really don't want the team to pick some **** Bon Jovi song, I get it, but at the end of the day, how important is this goal song? It's not what it was when the team was winning Cups. Multiple teams use the same exact song. The "you suck" is not clever and it's not original either. It doesn't intimidate anyone or any teams. Honestly, how much will the atmpsphere change or suffer if the team can find a song that clicks and works well after goals (should we score any)? Is it really that important to chant "you suck"? I really don't get it.

Personally, I don't care for the chant but I can take it or leave it. I honestly appreciate that people did get behind it and it allowed for some noise at the arena, but the same exact thing can happen for a different song. I don't know, being concerned with the goal song just blows my mind right now when we're all supporting a team that can barely skate. Should at least make for an interesting game on Saturday.

While i believe the fans will fight this. I also believe in the end the owners will win out. I like some of you want RRpt2 back but at the current moment i dont see it happening at all. At some point we will just have to come to terms that its changing create something new and just HOPE TO GOD!! that nothing crappy gets picked.

My issue with the vote are things like Gaslight Anthem retweeting/campaigning. You are getting votes from fanbases of bands which have nothing to do with the team. It is very difficult to overcome that just in terms of sheer numbers.
