Bunting (limited sample and all), Kerfoot, and even the likes of Kampf and McCabe didn't exactly have stellar track records in that department prior to becoming Leafs either IMO. This narrative is becoming incredibly and comically overblown.

Kampf and McCabe both had great defensive impacts before they were acquired. Bunting had no sample size. I don't remember Kerfoots.

Klingberg, Bertuzzi and Domi all have defensive impacts that suggest they're some of the worst defensive players in the league. These situations aren't comparable at all.

How does any of this solve our goal scoring issues in the playoffs? The defense and goaltending were fine.

If we're going bare bones in cap space in net (which I am not opposed too), I would rather trade Sammy for assets and use the $3M to bring in another forward that can score (Toews/Tatar/etc.)

Tatar sure - Toews eff no. He’s not sure he even wants to play.

I'd probably prefer to sign Bailey for near league min, if possible, and see if he can help provide some secondary offense. He's very solid defensively as well, which the top 9 could now use. Not a goal scoring but a primary playmaker that could work with Domi, Tavares, or even Matthews in spurts.

Also local GTA kid.

Found some success on the recent Lou version of the Isles, but age has caught up to him. Wonder if a more open system if he has an uptick in production.

There was one game I watched last year and he looked like he could give Jason Allison a run for his trophy.

Could've been an off day/coming back from an injury. I just remember he looked like a stone compared to #3.

Hasn't signed as of yet.

As far as Dumba, I'm not surprised at all. What does a 14 point, offensive D, who is weak defensively get? He's clearly not in agreement with what the market will pay him.

Good lord I had no idea he was so awful last Season.

Hadn't realized his skating might have fallen off that much .. maybe not then

Okokok…
So, where do we all think Nylander is being dealt?

I’d say…
Nylander to Nashville for
Trenin + Fabbro + Askarov

Or

Nylander +Liljegren + Timmins to Calgary for
Lindholm + Hanafin + Zadorov

Nylander would come with an extension, as would Lindholm and Hanafin

The Leafs starting D so far is largely the same that was pretty damn good through last season. Klingberg replaces Holl and McCabe replaces Sandin on the depth chart, more or less.

Mayfield got a 7 year contract (until he's 38 years old), so it's fair to say not many teams are as crazy as Lamoriello to not care for the next GM that has to deal with that.

I think the next move will likely be adding a Schenn replacement that can play some meaningful minutes. Who, how and when? I dunno.
I personally really don’t like the D makeup. We did need that offensive injection from a Klingberg type but it needed to be a LHD to replace Gio.

Ideally, Klingberg is heavily sheltered, but how do you do that? 2nd pair with McCabe? I was not at all impressed by him since acquisition.
3rd pair with Gio, 2nd pair is Lily with McCabe?

It’s totally misshapen and far too soft to me. Holl wasn’t a bruiser but he was big and sometimes used his body. Replacing that with Klingberg? That’s a major miss.

They need to move Lily, Gio to ride pine, and get a big defensive D, preferably RH, to form a shutdown pair with McCabe. Then sign a rugged stay at home LHD to insulate Klingberg way better than Gio can

Realistically we need two D men. We should probably replace Brodie since he has a higher cap hit and is a free agent at end of season and Gio needs to be a number 7

Probably getting a really good RHD in a Nylander deal and the last LHD spot should be a trade for Zadorov to add much needed size and snarl

It's hard to say because they are most certainly not done there. I'd be shocked if they went into October with these 7D. Whoever they get will likely change the roles and depth accordingly. The whole defensive core does miss another element of toughness and physicality after McCabe.

I think Klingberg replaces the Sandin role of adding a player that you probably want to play in softer minutes but that hopefully can give you a lot of offense in those minutes. The big X factor is if he can find his game that he had with Dallas a few years ago... he was not that bad defensively.

I don't think the Leafs really replaced Holls role right now. For me, Liljegren gets an increased role and he's the one that gets elevated to play with McCabe. He skates well, he's got skill and can make plays at both ends of the ice.

Got a buddy texting me about Ullman to Leafs rumour. Some crappy random website that I don’t think is relevant, but hypothetical discussion?

Doesn’t make much sense right?

Not really.

I guess if Treliving doesn't like Samsonov, then maybe? But then there is a lot of money juggling and the whole idea with cost.

Plus it is not like Ullmark has performed well in the playoffs. Samsonov outplayed him, even though he was shaky himself.

I'm assuming they mean the Swedish d man Erik Ullman.

He could be like a poor man's Ryan O'Reilly without the accolades and charming personality.

I don’t think we can sign anybody over a buriable cap hit, until suck time as we sort out the Matty and Nylander situation, not to mention Murray. It’s a hold until we do.

Well he is 87 but he would definitely bring some championship pedigree and people have been saying they want to check the culture.
I actually met him in the late 90’s. Super nice guy he signed some cards for me
