The Leafs could have easily afforded Bunting if they wanted to, they choose to give that money to Klingberg. I didn't want to re-sign Kerfoot and Holl. But they're still better than replacement players and the team is worse.
Bunting has a 3 year deal at $4.5 mil and even if you re-signed him instead of Klingberg that only works for this upcoming years.

The following year Matthews and Nylander still unknown $$ will eat up most of or more of the +$4 mil Cap increase so Leafs didn't want to spend large $$ into future years.

That said how does keeping Bunting and not signing Klingberg make the Leafs better, it not just more of the same now at a much higher price point $4.5 mil instead of $950k

I'm frustrated that we didn't sign or trade Matthews or Nylander before their no trade kicked in. They probably have more leverage in contract negotiation now....... Get ready for $15M+ for Matthews, which I think will destroy this team

Bunting went from $950k last year to 3 years @ $4,500,000.
Kerfoot went from $3.5 mil last year to 2 years @ $3.5 mil keeping his same salary.
Holl went from $2 mil to 3 years @ $3.4 mil

Recap

Before: those 3 players cost $6.45 mil.
vs
After: those 3 players now cost $11.4 mil.
vs
Those 2 new players for Reaves (1.35 mil) & Klingberg ($4.15 mil) or $5.5 mil combined. (only aspect current GM had any control over)

What would you have done differently as their salaries nearly doubled from last year and Leafs could no longer afford to keep them?
Good job Mess.

Interesting stats for sure that bring a harsh dose of reality to this quagmire.

I'm going to circle back to an earlier thought. In his meetings with the largely intact front office I'm sure Brad Treliving has learned how strong the development of the team's existing prospects is supposed to be. We may be experiencing BT taking them at their word and he is prepared to face the 2023-24 season promoting those strong prospects into the NHL lineup behind the core 4. Don't re-sign Noel Acciari, play Bobby McMann instead. Don't sign skill forwards, we've got Nick Robertson, Nick Abruzzese and SDA ready to go. Don't source some NHL minimum salary veteran re-tread for the 4th line, bring in Alex Steeves.

And his actual signings have been about back filling positions that don't have internal solutions: tough guy, puck moving RHD, defense depth.

The only one of those who could, this year, be realistically expected to match our depth pieces from last year is Holmberg, and he was already our depth for a good part of last year, that had to be upgraded at the deadline.

But we did spend money on UFAs... Just the wrong ones...
He was upgraded and people flipped out we upgraded him for physicality. Now they're upset he has a good chance of playing again? A lot think Abruzzese is ready for that next step and is one of our more intelligent players. Like I've been saying, the only thing we're missing from our depth pieces is physicality because they didn't bring much scoring during the playoffs.

The player has to agree.

It could be Treliving checked in on these guys and they said no-thanks.

Does anyone believe at this point players are longing to sign with the Leafs?
They have to want to sign here. Don't forget that. Acciari is American, is Hathaway? I don't know.

And you guys are not concerned by the fact that Tre seems to be failing at convincing absolutely anyone decent to sign here, including our own UFAs? Including Canadian players?

We're a contender in a major market. Yet we're losing UFAs to Flyers, Penguins, Nashville. Non-contenders.

Homie...it's kind of already destroyed.

They're just delaying the inevitable collapse at this point because they want something to market.

The core 4 is good enough to make the playoffs and roll the dice. I keep coming back to 2 more years then you are free of JT and his 11 mil to better build the team and also a higher cap as well.

My guess is looked towards Duchene at 3 mil, Wheeler at 800k, Brown with a cap hit of 750k instead of Reaves, Kampf and Klingberg.

I mean, that would've at least been a good start and saved money for a cap strapped team.
The thing about Free agency is in the word and that players are free to decide where they want to sign.

You can't take deals with other teams and say that would have been better, unless you knew those players would have signed in Toronto for those amounts.

Can't put a gun to a players head and there in lies the rub.

Duchene chose Dallas, because when interviewed was where his family wanted to relocate to. Connor Brown was recruited by his former Erie Otter teammate Connor McDavid to come to Edmonton, and Wheeler after being bought out decided as a American born player to play in NY for a discount rate.

The question might be whether the goal is to win or to market?

Matthews is a marketing piece, although he's really kind of slimy.

Letting him go might provide a better opportunity at winning

My opinion would be they didn't "love" their leadership group.

Shanny? All about marketing top players, team be damned.

I think they hated the phony/NHL lackey the Leafs have as a prez .

Not sure what you're even talking about. Acciari was pretty widely loved by everybody on here.

I don't think anybody is upset that Holmberg has a good chance of playing again. I think people are upset that we're going to need Holmberg and some currently unknown pieces to do more than they've shown to be capable of at this point, because we decided to make some bad signings instead of bolstering our depth.

Man I hope we have some trades lined up because our bottom 6 looks thin on offense and we lack a center to build around

Kampf defends well but he ain't scoring like a good 3rd liner

I'd like to see us bring in some scoring to at least put pressure on our kids coming through

Don't worry, we are counting on Robertson to score 50 from the bottom 6 to make up for all the 5G-7G players we signed.

Not really. This free agent class is crappy, to be honest. The real jewels of it haven't even signed yet.

Our deals so far have been low risk. I'll take that any day over massive overpayments in term.

I have a lot of interest in Bertuzzi, but am afraid he's going to price himself out of our reach. If he does that, then fine, I don't want to see a David Clarkson contract for him. Domi would be interesting and perhaps he'll sign here on the cheap given his family history here and to somewhat rebuild his career.

If they are going to be around the same AAV, I prefer Bertuzzi over Domi. As a little bit more size, can be a handful for opposing players, and has a history of producing in the playoffs throughout his entire hockey career.

Would have liked to have added Hathaway as well, but he just signed with the Flyers for a cap hit that would have been too much for us.

What depth? People like you say we lost because of depth scoring and now all of a sudden we had it all along? So it's a core issue then? Can we make up our minds here. Did we even get 10 goals total from our bottom 6 during the playoffs in those 11 games? 1 goal a game average from them all combined?

5-7 goals isn't good enough now to you from our depth guys? That's all the ones we let go brought to our lineup.

A lot of your UFAs move on from the team. To what extent was that disappointing?

Treliving: There are some good players. A lot of my focus, since coming here, has been working on our own players. There have been some good players.

I said when I was introduced that I thought Kyle Dubas did a really good job, especially at the deadline, of augmenting the team. For the most part, we tried. The price has got to fit.

I wish those players all the very best. It is a puzzle to put together. There were certain levels that we could go to, notwithstanding some of the other business we have to do. Unfortunately, there are some players we would love to have here, but good for them in getting the deals we got. We just couldn’t make a business deal.

How surprised are you by how some of those situations played out throughout the day?

Treliving: I wouldn’t say it is really unexpected, especially for our guys. Probably in the last day or so, we had a pretty good idea, especially with the guys that were here last year that signed elsewhere, that we weren’t going to be able to make it work.

We have some business to take care of throughout the summer and we wanted to make sure we are being prudent in terms of leaving ourselves some room moving forward. Term was an important thing for us in this free agency. I don’t know if there was anything that was overly surprising.

Where do you go now in terms of next moves? Do you turn to the trade market?

Treliving: We are looking at everything. I know the first few hours of July 1st get all of the attention, but we have all summer to build our team. We will continue to do it. We have some depth things that we have to look at later this afternoon and this evening into tomorrow.

We continue to look at ways to make ourselves better. It is a puzzle. You are working with X amount of cap dollars. We will explore all avenues, whether it be through continuing to look at the free-agent market, looking at the trade market, or continuing to look at any way we can improve the team.

What are the priorities you want to address positionally?

Treliving: We continue to look at depth on the blue line, but we also look up front. To me, depth scoring is a situation that we want to address.

There are two ways to address it. I still think there are some people in the organization that can push from below. Certainly, to the earlier question of whether it is through free agency or the trade market, it is an area we want to try to become deeper.

We had some goals walk out the door here today. Definitely, goal scoring is something we want to continue address not only today but throughout the summer.

Doesn't really inspire much confidence tbh. Seriously getting JFJ vibes at this point. I hope I'm wrong.
