we have too many defencemen with no identity.
Brodie, Lily, Timmins, even McCabe, what are they? not huge, not offensive, not overly physical, just kind of there.

Rielly and Klingberg are clear offence first guys, but nobody else has a clear role. I think max you can have two guys like that of your 6 and ideally only 1.

McCabe is good at 2M, smoked some guys with open ice hits etc...good at a bit of everything, no issue with him on my team.

I wish Calgary wasn’t petty about trading with Treliving. Think Zadorov would be a real good add for us.
'Petty'? Where does that come from?

At the moment it just seems like signing
Klingberg as a Holl replacement appears to be less than what Treliving himself implied/suggested was going to happen to the D. So id wager at least one more larger move will be happening. Either a Gio retirement/replacement or a Brodie/Lily/Timmins trade seems to be what will eventually happen

He can be useful with the right usage based on his time with the Wild. Issue is his biggest impact is offensive more so than defensive and Klingberg seems to have that covered. But I think Tre has been linked to him in the past, so who knows
They may make a move, I just don't think Brodie will be part of that.

i like him too, but can't have 4 similar players, its the same problem we have up front, our big 4 all have the same disposition, Domi and Bertuzzi will help some in that regard
Rielly - ?
? - Lily
McCabe - Klingberg

IF those 2 questions marks were like Tanev/Peeke and Zadorov or similar, then you start to have something.
You could probably run the D we have for much of the regular season, but its just not gonna cut it playoff time, so lots of time to address it

I guess Brodie and Timmins go during the regular season, unless Timmins breaks out big time.

I would think he’d have to be at this point unless he’s fine going to a team that isn’t any good

I’d be surprised if Calgary had anything particularly against dealing with Treliving. Where is this comment coming from?

Last 32 Thoughts of the season Friedman speculates Calgary may not want to trade with Toronto due to Treliving being our GM. Now granted I’m putting an editorial slant with the “petty” comment, but I only said that due to how they had that silly rule that Tree couldn’t be on the draft floor until they made their pick.

I'm not sure where this "trade Brodie" narrative came from.

Is it because he didn't have a great playoff series last year?

Is it because of his style?

Is there that many good free agent defensemen left to sign, or to trade for?

What assets do we have to trade that can get you better than Brodie? Wouldn't that require moving Nylander, Knies, Robertson, Liljgren, etc. for this to happen? Isn't this defensive depth more of a thing they can explore at the deadline?

Sounds like nonsense, IMO.

He's 6'1 and 204 lbs, that's not small.

It's not massive like a Zadorov but not small like a Barrie.

I think it's for a number of reasons. Many people have a recency bias, and only remember his struggles while being paired with McCabe, against Florida. Neither are very good puck moves, hence the struggles.

He's still a very good defensive guy though.

But you look around, and want to change things, his cap hit pretty much determines, if there is a D going out, and one coming in, it has to be him. It's not Mo, we know that, we just picked up Klingberg, for better or worse, and everyone else is $ 2 mil or less.

Also, if you feel that there isn't enough size back there, Brodie isn't a big guy.. 6'1".. but only 185lbs. Cap hit of $5 mil, so if we planning on bringing in a guy, he gives us the most flexibility.

Yes, we could choose to make a move nearer the deadline... it really depends on who is available right now... are we actually trading Nylander, what are the offers... do the offers include a Brodie replacement... It's a little chain of dominoes right now.

Friedman like many other talking heads get their talking points from these boards. They don't have an original thought in their brain.
Many smarter and wiser gents posting here than in the media. We have been discussing what we need for years now. I yawn everytime they open their mouths.

Maybe if Mgmt did the same, we would have won the cup now?:laugh:

Dubas is a fan of the swiss army knife. Not bad at anything, not good at anything. This doesn't apply to Brodie though, who is actually good.

McCabe is one of the top hitters among d-men

Brodie is one of the top defensive d-men

Liljegren is a young player finding his footing, who has become very good in transitioning the puck up ice

13 is a good number for Matthews. It's a 1.36 million raise, him getting 13 is not as much as it looks. He is an elite player, already one of the greatest leafs of all time. Although I do worry about his wrist issues becoming chronic, especially considering he is a goal scorer and needs his wrists to be right lol

The Nylander extension if it gets done is gonna be hell for our cap until it goes up, but there are quite a few players making 9-10 million that I'd EASILY take Nylander over any day of the week. He deserves 9-9.5 million.
His health really matters in this decision.

5 years seems perfect actually

And Willy, I’d love to have around. He’s the game breaker of the core, who I think could be instrumental in spreading the offence out. But if he’s too rich in his demands, I’m always down for a big trade.

Very anti-money ball of him which is surprising given how much more complicated hockey is from a multitude of events perspective
