Well, based on guys under contract…

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Kampf - Reaves
McMann - Holmberg - Lafferty

Rielly - Brodie
McCabe - Liljegren
Giordano - Timmins

Murray
Woll
Same defence with less scoring depth.

There isn't enough offence on the blueline either

Unless that d man is a retained karlsson then this is a brutal idea.
They need to score more from more parts of the line up.
You don't think there's a fair deal to be made for Nylander that returns a good defenseman with other things to even it out? The d-man doesn't need to be the only thing coming back.

Why do you say Rogers? There don't seem to be issues with the Jays, the team that Rogers owns on its own. It could be Bell. Or even though he has little power, maybe it's Larry Tanenbaum.

Just wondering if you have a reason for singling out Rogers?
There are definitely issues with the Jays. Bo isn’t coming back and neither are most of the other notable players. When you look at Shatkins and how they talk about the team it makes you wonder if they’re living in an alternate reality. Manoah reportedly checked into camp 30 lbs over his previous weight and it wasn’t all muscle. Yet they ran him out to start the season anyway pumping him up as a cy young candidate. Same with Kirk who missed spring training altogether. Apparently conditioning isn’t a thing anymore with team management. Then you have the Bass saga which was mishandled. Mitch White and his 10+ ERA in long relief? Seriously? Gurriel/Varsho trade etc.

I could go on but you get the idea. The inmates i.e. owners are running the asylum i.e. team at Roger’s and running it straight off a cliff.

One has to seriously wonder how much autonomy Tre actually has with this team or is Shanahan effectively the barely competent GM?

I see the flames, Canadians and Jets and their ownership are getting the same cold shoulder from FA players as well. It’s not completely Canada wide as Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver are signing guys.

So now who’s the teams 4th best forward? Who’s playing with JT or with Matthews?
Is that D man helping them score more than 2 goals in 7 straight playoff games?
They lost in round 2 because they needed to win 2-1 games, what’s your plan? Win 1-0?

Either the Leafs are the last ones to know or Shanahan is too stubborn to care.

He decided they’re coming back and hired a GM that was willing to agree with him, it’s not like they accidentally found themselves in this situation last minute. If anything you have to go out of your way to find yourself in this situation after the previous GM was ready to move them.

He moved back 13 spots to dump mrazek & gave a 3rd to swap Ritchie for lyubushkin. Those are not steep prices
No, he moved from the 1st to the 2nd. Don't trivialize 13 spots.13 spots isn't 13 spots at the top of the draft. Very obtuse and Excel way of looking at it.

And this is without undoing his biggest mistake in Murray yet.

If this core is so toxic that no one wants to come here why was no effort made to move them before their NMCs kicked in?

I dont think anyone said toxic.

There is toxic, and then there is compete level when the grind kicks in. Finding that next gear.

Sometimes it can take a while, sometimes it takes a certain blend of personality etc.

We have seen teams take years (Washington) to find that formula.

Leafs dont seem too close, but you never know with the right pieces brought in. But its certainly more difficult in todays cap era when you have a salary structure like the Leafs.
