Hollowell really is just too small to play NHL defense. It's not the height, it's the size, he's light and not strong. He's a good skater and has good technique but not the outstanding skill to compensate. I bet he goes to Europe and become an excellent player over there.

Better Kerfoot than Holl.

Since we had no draft picks, we need to land some ready to play guys as compensation. How some of these thought to be stars have faltered. Just, Comtois, Sam Steel etc. There may be a few in the pile to resurrect or salvage.

Here's an odd question: are the unqualified RFAs unrestricted free agents right at this moment like they could sign before the start of free agency on July 1st?

Idk for sure but I think they gotta wait til July 1st because technically they weren't released yet and they could be qualified right up until midnight. I could be wrong.

Now if they were actually released, then idk

Jeez. Lots of these draft picks are amounting to nothing. And we had such a good scouting department. So frustrating.

I will be beyond pissed if the Leafs bring back one of Kerfoot or Holl, let alone both. The UFA market has become flush with capable replacements, especially at forward. Kerfoot has been the red-headed stepchild in the lineup for years. There are many options for the Leafs to get a proper bottom 6 or top 6 forward who will fit in. Enough is enough, get a guy who knows his place in the lineup and sticks with it.

The Maple Leafs have extended qualifying offers to goaltender Ilya Samsonov and forwards Nick Abruzzese and Semyon Der-Arguchintsev. The club did not extend qualifying offers to defencemen Mac Hollowell, Filip Král and Victor Mete.

Surprised about Kral and Mete.

Trade nylander and marner
Sign Kane, Bertuzzi, and Tarasenko

Nylander+Marner = $18 million
Kane = 5 years * $6 million
Tarasenko = 5 years * $8 million
Bertuzzi = 6 years * $5.5 million

Bertuzzi. Matthews. Taresenko
Knies. Tavares. Kane

The free agent market now seems to be chock full of mid-20's worthwhile reclamation projects and free-agents-due-to-circumstances types. We know there have to be some steals out there. Leafs' pro scouting: DO YOUR STUFF!

Situations like this is where Treliving should be expected to earn his paycheque.

He's got enough cap to bring in a few of these guys. Hopefully he doesn't just turn back to known guys like Kerfoot/Holl ect

Yeah it would be inexcusable if he dishes out a bad contract or two when there's a lot of interesting efficient options for depth.

Take a swing at Bertuzzi and/or Duchene, if not... Take a few singles.

The three defenders that Treliving didn't qualify would all have been eligible for waivers anyway (though they probably all would have cleared). I'm definitely good with Samsonov, Abruzzese and SDA receiving QO's.
