I wouldn’t care if it was Tre’s pet project to bring on some character goons or whatever if he got the actually big stuff done first.

Having it come out that him and Nylander aren’t close the day after the draft is absolute insanity. You either trade him at the draft or you better be sure you’re signing him, getting 2024 picks from teams that missed out on PLD or whoever is an abject failure.

Nylander not close but at least we have the inside track on Reaves, Holl, and Kerfoot lmao.

The team has no direction but at least an 13th forward might beat up a basement team’s 3rd pair D, plan the parade!!

I don't think there would be any issues with Reaves as a league min on July 10th or something, it's whatever. But the optics of Reaves being high on their list is puzzling to say the least.

An unusually thin Free Agent crop in another flat cap summer was injected with some much-needed intrigue on Friday when Blake Wheeler and Matt Duchene were bought out of the final years of their contracts with the Winnipeg Jets and Nashville Predators.

Two $8 million players, who hadn’t quite lived up to their pay last season, will now hit the market on Saturday with a chance to double dip next season and get paid from two clubs simultaneously.

Both Duchene and Wheeler rocketed toward the top of Daily Faceoff‘s Top 50 Free Agents ranking on the eve of the free agent window opening on Saturday at 12 noon ET. (Be sure to check out Daily Faceoff’s two-hour live stream from 11am to 1pm ET.)

Duchene, 32, scored 65 goals over the last two seasons – including a 43-goal campaign in 2021-22. Wheeler, 36, has very quietly averaged 71 points over an 82-game pace over the last four seasons. That’s down from the twin 91-point seasons he strung together for the Jets that earned him the $42 million deal recently bought out.

Wheeler is eligible for an “Over-35” bonus-incentivized contract structure. It will be interesting to see what Duchene prioritizes on the market, whether it’s a chance to contend on a short-term, short money deal that may set him up for next season when the cap increases – or more stability and term with his young family.

Either way, the Class of 2023 got a whole lot more interesting on Friday. Here are a few other nuggets:

Sounds like there is significant interest in Max Pacioretty coming off a re-ruptured Achilles that limited him to five games in Carolina. Teams indicated the Canes have granted Pacioretty permission to peruse the market early. Pacioretty and Connor Brown (ACL tear) are both eligible to sign performance bonus-based deals by virtue of being on the injured list for more than 100 days last season.

The San Jose Sharks had yet to make progress on a new deal with newly acquired goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, who can become a UFA on Saturday without a $3.36 million qualifying offer. Blackwood hasn’t made the board yet because he isn’t a UFA, but the goalie market will be fascinating. Cam Talbot, Laurent Brossoit, James Reimer, Anthony Stolarz, Jaroslav Halak and Martin Jones are just a few of the other goalies available outside of the Top 50.

Max Comtois joined the board as one of the pending RFA players not qualified by his club. He was due a $2.4 million qualifying offer. That list will go once teams officially decide not to qualify others on Friday at 5pm.

Similarly, it sounds like Matthew Phillips will hit the market on Saturday. Calgary has made an offer to the Group VI UFA, believed to be a two-year deal, and the door isn’t closed on a return. But for a young player who has been one of the best in the AHL the last few years, more opportunity elsewhere has to be attractive.

Ryan Reaves is 100% getting signed by the Leafs. This is the 4th "insider" that says the Leafs are going after him.

It f***ing blows my mind Ryan Reaves is a priority and high on their list.

Foglino at 50% would be better, if they have to have a player like that.

They know Clifford is still here right?

I personally don't love the idea of signign Reaves but if it's a buriable amount, I guess whatever.

If they do end up signing him though, you just know he's going to absolutely beat the living shit out of Arber Xhekaj in the season opener and this place is going to absolutely love him.

It's definitely going to be the case of us all loving him during the games he had an scrap and then resenting him the rest of the time.

If they sign him I hope it works out regardless lol

A bit of a worrying sign though is Russo (Wild reporter) said the Wild initially had interest but likely wanted to spend money elsewhere, so he's probably not coming for league minimum

Crazy times. Lots of recent trade dumps of decent players for "future considerations", non QO's. The cap crunch is hitting everyone, and I suspect there won't be enough to go around for all the available bodies out there, and some will be left without a seat. Lots of quantity but not alot of game breakers... top 2 fowards available likely Bertuzzi and O'reilly? (Don't even say Kane he's cooked) Can't see many large earth shattering UFA signings, might be the dullest year ever at the top. Cue someone offering Bunting crazy money. "Lots of interest in Justin Holl"?? Good grief. **EDIT** Re-sign Luuuke! He made everyone a bit taller and can still play.

You'd need 3-4 new faces to make a substantive upgrade to the functional toughness to the team. If they can't accomplish that, Reaves is fun window dressing toughness. Kind of the legitimate version of what they wanted Simmonds to do for us.

I suppose the thinking is deterrence factors
Bennett will not bother running around with Reaves around
Either way Reaves is not the answer
That's not a thing. Bennet will do whatever he's going to do, regardless of who is on our team. The only thing Reaves would do is drag down the 4th line.

What's this organization's fascination with washed up tough guys?

I’m already hating Treliving if any of what’s being reported is true, in addition to the Kampf signing

Reeves is worse that Simmonds with exception of throwing fists and he’s somehow the only we’re linked to? Great

Kerfoot, Holl? Holy f*** I’ll lose my mind if Kerfoot is back.

Murray back?

Letting Nylander and Matthews’ clauses take hold?

I miss Dubas.
