If the Leafs bought out TJ Brodie last year the Leafs would have saved $5 mil this year in cap and that could go a long way to signing a player like Duchene or re-signing a player like ROR.
Truw though they would also have to replace brodie with a quality top 4D which may cost the same amount. I think Duchene could be willing to take a smaller deal to go to a contender as he is already getting paid out his previous 8 million dollar AAV contract

I really wonder if there are some off the ice issues with Duchene where mgmt doesn't want him near the young guys? 100% complete speculation on my part. But would be a great add.

Buying him out makes no sense. If it's for the re-build, they could trade him at the deadline for a decent haul.
he made 8 mil a year for the next 3 years, i think its simple as that

To Toronto-
K'Andre Miller
Alexis Lafreniere
1st Round Pick

To Rangers-
William Nylander
T.J Brodie 20% retained
Laf is entering bust territory, and Miler - while good - is way overhyped, with D warts plus a very late 1st?

And how are the Rangers going to be able to add $13 million to their cap?

It makes the Leafs worse, and no regard was given to the NYR salary cap.

That futures + cap space move buys the team flexibility. I would be fine with it if it's part of larger plan to replace Nylander with multiple players.

Suppose they use the cap space on Garland + Bertuzzi.
I understand that, but there is a lot of unknowns there.....and no need to lose a trade that badly to facilitate a move.

True but the one thing MLSE has is load of money so making aggressive moves that only cost cash is an advantage for the organization to use as needed. If you hypothetically bought out Brodie you save $5 mil this year and then if you make a trade for say Hanifin ($4.95 mil) or Brett Pesce ($4 mil AAV) and replace him instantly for the money you just recaptured. Remember Leafs got Brodie for free as a UFA years back so have no real investment costs other than paying his salary the last few years & a $2 mil buyout cost and cap hit in 2024-25. :wg:

Oh I'm all in on Duchene idea as he was on my wish list going all the way back as far as his entry draft of 2009, Duchene went #3 but Leafs held #5oa until a Boyd Deveraux hatrick in game #82 dropped the Leafs to 7th.

Bought out players should be a real focus of Treliving to see if deals can be had due to payouts from former buyout deals and players double dipping now.

Before the buyout Matty Duchene was a 3 year @ $8 mil cap hit consideration even in a trade for future considerations to fit into a tight budget. Now perhaps 3 years at $3-4 mil (@1/2 price) might be an option.

Move JT to LW and sign Duchene to center line #2 and Marner/Nylander fills out a 2nd line behind Knies -- Matthews -- Nylander/Marner top line,

Duchene's playoff production isn't bad...again, I question the locker room but if you can get him to 1 year 4-5M...he would fit needs like scoring and speed.

I would have put signing Sammy ahead of overpaying Kampf. He could have made a trade or traded down at the draft. Murray is still a Leaf.

As I said, the weekend should paint a better picture.

Oh yeah, they need to move on from Wes Clark IMO. As Bukala said in an interview, he values small, skilled players. I've seen enough of this guy.
Wow. lol

Did you happen to look at the size of the players just drafted, or do you even follow Toronto?

So far, not impressed with what I have seen from Tre. The weekend should paint a better picture of what this guy can do. If he is following orders from Shanny, I am expecting another early playoff exit.
He says before any trades or UFA starts.

Serious question. Do you ever post anything of any value, or something that isn't a huge overreaction?

Gonna really suck losing Luke Schenn. He's exactly the type pf player we need on the backend.

He must really want a lot of money. I thought maybe he could take the Bogosian route with Tampa and sign for cheap but with term since he loved it here so much

If the leafs could move Nylander +? For Pesce and Necas, possibly bring in Duchene I think that's a W given the circumstances.

Can't really go too far over Meier contract. The market is set. No more Dubas freebies.

What would the cost on Brown be?

I’d be extremely hesitant giving him anything north of $3M.

Maximum I’d go is a $3M x 3

Evangelista (20 year old season at essentially PPG in the AHL) + Askarov is a pretty decent get, IMO.

I understand there's some risk there.
