If the Leafs bought out TJ Brodie last year the Leafs would have saved $5 mil this year in cap and that could go a long way to signing a player like Duchene or re-signing a player like ROR.
Lmao such a dumb idea. Like an absolute 0/10 post.

They can sign these players without buying out a player with positive value. Brodie had a bad playoff series and has been nothing of fantastic otherwise.

Surely you didn't think buying out Brodie before last season was a good idea? ..right?

Any names that we might expect to show up on this list?

I remember Dylan Strome being a big one last year. Comtois this year I believe. Anyone else?

Caleb Jones and Gurianov. Wouldn't be shocked to see Bear, Stanley, or Jost get non-tendered either.

Jarnkrok has a 10 team no trade list.

Almost 1/3 of players on non-ELCs have some from of trade protection.

Even more when you consider that a lot of the guys who didn't probably received more money to make up for it.

Acquiring Duchene would make up alot of the offense lost in a Nylander trade.

Not only that but trading Nylander will also be a massive hit to our overall team speed as he's our best skater up front, so bringing in another fast skater just lines up so nicely.

It would give us the chance to really add some nice pieces in a Nylander trade to make us a more balanced team while not losing so much offense.
Duchene say at 5-6 mil, so 3 mill saved vs Nylander, perhaps enough to now keep a ROR. Then a couple picks and a prospect for Bill, flip the picks at the deadline to load up. Come on, that’s an upgrade all day long imo. Let’s see how nimble Brad is, opportunity just knocked.

If things look difficult with Samsonov, the Leafs can file for arbitration until July 5th
That is the main reason Leafs didn't buyout Murray this buyout window.. IMO

If the Leafs take Sammy to arbitration then Leafs open a 2nd buyout window in late August/Sept.

With the uncertainty of this situation with Samsonov, Leafs are using Murray as leverage and security backup plan in case you can't get him signed.

If an arbitrator awards Sammy $4 mil per the Leafs simply buyout Murray which creates the $4 mil in 2023-24 needed immediately via cap space to cover it.

PS. Toronto has 3 arbitration-eligible players in goalie Ilya Samsonov plus defensemen Victor Mete and Mac Hollowell with the former being the most likely to file.

They bought out Duchene due to "culture"

Would Trotz want one of his favourites back in Jarnkrok?

Maybe a couple of 3rds or a 3rd+4th? He's a good player but I've seen his last 2 playoffs now (Calgary and Toronto, nothing special in Nashville either) and he's not for me.

I’m shocked Duchene was bought out. I’d be all over that, can split time between center and wing. Brings speed to the top six which is desperately needed.

His game doesn’t translate to the playoffs at all, he was a boat anchor in the top six. I’d trade him in a heartbeat and you’d get a decent return.

He should be traded as his decline is obvious.

He has been very average the last two years for what he is payed.
Treliving likely believes he can deal him and include him in a trade to open up $5 mil and top 4 Dman spot for the new Guy on D.

Because he never moved him at the draft for a pick, that already closed one option to remove his contract and free up cap space.

The Leafs aren't at the rebuild stage, and this trade is 3 quarters for a twoonie

That futures + cap space move buys the team flexibility. I would be fine with it if it's part of larger plan to replace Nylander with multiple players.

Suppose they use the cap space on Garland + Bertuzzi.

He's a cheap utility forward. Why move him?
