Smith is a superior player in every way. Puljujarvi just had double hip surgery and he's out for a long time. JVR and Comtois scored a combined 21 goals... but yeah, they'd be awesome with the Leafs for sure.

Im not saying hes not

But paying 5M a smith who at the probably not change anything, but hurting depht, hurting D...

If payint a top 6 45 M is not enough, youre in trouble sorry

Your not gonna spend 55 M in top 6
8-9 M for bottom 6 5-6 M on goaltender, 14 M on D and hope youre gonna be ok

Reaves? For what exactly? They had Simmonds and he never played. He’s feared and a great fighter as well…

He's 210lbs.

Ok so just sign the top heaviest players and we're good to go?

I have so far: Buddy Robinson (236 lbs), Dylan McIlrath (231), Milan Lucic (231), Nick Ritchie (230), Julian Gauthier (227), Jack Johnson (227), Luke Schenn (227). And then of course can't forget Ryan Reaves (225). So that's 3 D and 5 forwards. Good to go with 12M? Not soft and good upgrades?

You forgot the part where you use your brain to sort through the list and pick appropriate players.

Now that I’m home, I can come up with a quick list. These players aren’t necessarily better than Smith, but they bring different skill sets that would better complement our top-6.

UFAs
Nick Bjugstad - 6’6”, 210 - mostly used in bottom-6 roles, but pushes 20 goals when he’s top-6.

Oskar Sundqvist - 6’3”, 220 - middle-6 winger who is a load on the cycle and around the net.

Adam Erne - 6’1”, 210 - middle-6 winger that is a absolute pitbull

Miles Wood - 6’2”, 195 - totally lacks creativity, but he’s got elite speed and attacks fearlessly in straight lines.

Alex Killorn - 6’1”, 195 - this is who we wish Bunting was. Skilled grit that perfectly compliments élite linemates.

Tyler Bertuzzi - 6’1”, 190 - gritty playmaker would fit in perfectly beside Matthews.

For 5 million, we may as well just resign Bunting. He’s better than Smith.

If you just want offense, Max Domi is a better offensive player.

Reasonable Trades
Christian Fischer - 6’2”, 225 - has become a really good physical defender, but still has untapped playmaking abilities. He’s a 60 point guy with Matthews, and he compliments that line perfectly.

Max Comtois - 6’2”, 210 - gritty straight line player. He needs to play with guys who set him up.

Jack McBain - 6’3”, 200 - not exactly sure why Arizona would trade him, but I see his name a lot. Is that hopeful fans or a real possibility?

Wade Allison - 6’3”, 205 - great on the forecheck and cycle.

If you just want a 50 point guy and that’s all that matter, Conor Garland will be cheaper on the cap and to acquire.

Oh ok, you just said to sort by weight without any explanation. I see some softies in there but for the most part, some workable pieces to the puzzle. A lot of them have zero offense to their game as well and are 10-12ish minute players, but we'll omit that since they are "big". If we need top 6 players, Bertuzzi, Killorn and softie Domi would be the only fit. The first 2 are very likely to get well over 5M as well, who knows about Domi.

I never said all I wanted was a 50 point guy either like Smith, I said he would have been a great addition based on the trade that happened. He wouldn't be the only kind of addition that you do. A nice mix and balance based on the value they were acquired for.

We'll see what happens.

Treliving admits that he paid a premium to keep David Kampf. It's comforting that he (and/or other MLSE staff) recognized the value of the role Kampf fills and rarity of it on the UFA market. BTW, full marks to the previous GM for identifying this player 2 years ago coming off a one goal season.

Isn't Comtois a FA now since Anaheim didn't send him a qualifying offer?

It’s about building the best line, not adding the best player. Sometimes those are the same thing, but not always, and it’s much less common when you’re adding the 3rd wheel.

We don’t need a guy who can contribute on the PP, since he won’t play there anyway.

We need guys who can do what our stars can’t or won’t. Forecheck, backcheck, hit, battle, fight, go in the corners, go to the net.

Potential teams willing to trade for and extend Nylander at a number he likes: Seattle and Nashville

Potential trades involving a William Nylander S&T

Seattle: Bjorkstrand + Oleksiak + Kartye + 24' 1st

Nashville: Matthew Wood + Yaroslav Askarov
