Having a value deficit on a contract (being overpaid) isn't the same as being a negative asset as a player though. That implies that a perfectly paid player has neutral/ zero value, and the only players with positive value are those who are underpaid.
It's focusing too much on the cap and contracts while ignoring player rareness and on-ice contribution.
Everyone on day 1 of UFA is overpaid and only reach “fair” pay as the cap rises, would be weird if teams were voluntarily knowningly picking up negative assets every year.
