Having a value deficit on a contract (being overpaid) isn't the same as being a negative asset as a player though. That implies that a perfectly paid player has neutral/ zero value, and the only players with positive value are those who are underpaid.

It's focusing too much on the cap and contracts while ignoring player rareness and on-ice contribution.

Everyone on day 1 of UFA is overpaid and only reach “fair” pay as the cap rises, would be weird if teams were voluntarily knowningly picking up negative assets every year.

Toronto is close to Montreal and they are a contender. I wonder if were on his list.

I don't think it's about being close to Montreal. It's about playing for the Habs.

Never say never, but the smoke around PLD and Montreal is far too strong to even consider him being an option for the Leafs. And the Leafs have other areas to address than adding another high priced forward.

That's a very high hurdle when there's only 2-3 million of "waste" and 8-9 million of very hard to replace 1st line player, especially when you account for losing that player for nothing.

Follow up to my previous post
1. What's an 8-9 million dollar point per game 1C worth in trade?
2. What's 2-3 million in dead cap space worth in trade?

Is 2 as big as 1? If no, giving up 1 to get 2 doesn't make sense.

Very well framed. Though I still do think it could make sense for us in the context of changing the makeup of the team by moving a core piece. I think there's a good argument that a shakeup could provide a spark even if you technically "lose" the deal and Tavares would still be the choice for me. Obviously moot, he's not waiving.

I think most GM's believe they're fairly paid on day 1 and the overpaid part comes on the back half of the long-term deal.

Theres absolutely 0 logic in dumping Tavares just to dump him.

Won’t happen either way so whatever. He’s a PPG C.
Exactly how I feel, yes JT hurts the cap, but he’s still a useful player, he’s not done by a long shot if you ignore his cap hit………

The PLD situation seems so bizarre. I know he was a fan, but I cant remember another player so desperate to go home and play. We've been hearing about this for a year or two now
Maybe it’s as simple as he’s just another big entitled centre……….

Even if he would waive losing the deal is one thing, losing him for nothing is quite another. There's two main approaches
A- Offset the value - trade him at full cap but with less coming back
B- Offset the contract- trade him at the right cap hit (whether through retention or offsetting cap hit) with fullish coming back

The problem with both is that at those cap numbers the market is going to be limited, quite likely to the point where it further reduces value, maybe forcing to offset both. But still not be at the point of giving him away.

I can't believe I'm seeing Dubois name being thrown around here.

He is a puke.

He is a shit.

He is a petulant, self-entitled, whiney, piece of crap.

Yes, please pay to bring him here, we need so much more of that.

How about we bring in players with character, who are good teammates, who give a crap, and act like they want to be wherever they are playing?

Just a thought, and maybe too much to ask, but Douche-bois can take a flying @uck at a rolling donut so far as I'm concerned.

I'd be f***ing miserable too if I worked my ass off and my reward was living in Columbus and Winnipeg.

Depending on Sammy's asking price i'm good with him and Woll. Not much interest in Hart, i think the acquisition cost would turn me off as I don't believe he's much of an upgrade. Hellebuyck is another story in that he's a big upgrade on anything we've had in recent memory. Problem there is he's on his final year and will be 31 when he signs his next deal and as consistently good as he's been he's nearing the point of decline. So my hope is Treliving gets a good read on Samsonov's asking price first before exploring the goalie trade market.

Did he leave a flaming pile of dog shit on your porch or something?

How would people feel if it was a player doing everything he could to get to Toronto...

Columbus may not be the best hockey town, but have you ever been there?

Home of Ohio St. University, and it’s a hell of a town for a young man to live in. There’s a lot to get up to, to put it lightly…
Columbus is also the swinger's capital of the USA. Just to let you know.

This here folks is a quality rant, almost speaking in tongues worthy, I love the passion. So, let me get this straight it’s a hard pass on Pierre????

Have you even been to Columbus, or Winnipeg for that matter?

If the rumors I heard as a late 20s woman working in bars along High St at the time, he enjoyed those college girls VERY much.

This legit made me laugh.

Cheers.

We’ve gone down to see the Leafs a couple times now, had a great time. Underrated city, we’ll be back next year if the schedule suits.

There's some entitled thinking

I don't think this is entitled at all because it doesn't even apply in real life. I get to live where I want.

Have you even been to Columbus, or Winnipeg for that matter?

Am I missing out?

Maybe I was too harsh, but my point has less to do with the places than the choice.

Imagine going to the best med school in the world, finishing your residency and then being sent to a place where you might not imagine yourself living in. Against your choice.

This is something that free for any of us, by the way.

Any truth behind that rumour/report that Matthews might only seek a 3 year deal? If so get him the hell out. Send him to Anaheim and get that top pick. That would be absolutely ridiculous and make his intentions very clear he only cares about maximizing his profits every chance he can and doesn't give a damn about the team. I hope it's not true.
