I will say the Leafs should really be talking to them if they are in the mood to trade Jiricek and/or Mateychuk for an upgrade. The problem is that I'm not sure we have what they want. Marner and Nylander don't fit I don't think. Matthews isn't being traded. Tavares is a no go for Columbus of all places.
Yeah, I mean, you're probably right. But Jiricek is the guy I would want in any big trade involving our core 4. He checks every box.

I don't think Columbus does that deal lol.
I don't think so either by I love that deal.

Me too, Kent Johnson and Jiricek would be great young pieces. I still think someone from the "core 4" is getting traded. I just think they are being hush about it as they don't want anything to leak. If not, there will be a coaching change. I don't think they will come back the same.

To Toronto-
Boone Jenner
Kent Johnson
David Jiricek
Andrew Peeke

To Columbus-
Mitch Marner
Nick Robertson
TJ Brodie
28th overall pick
Columbus's main need is at C, so this isn't very attractive to them at all. Not only do they not obtain a C, but they give one (maybe two) up. No matter how you value these players, this is a terrible deal for Columbus. I'd love to get Jenner too, but at this point, there is no way that they can afford to give him up, without at least one legitimate C coming back.

TBH Columbus seems like they might have a fit for Tavares given their centre needs, not that the Leafs will move him or try to

Tavares did have his best statistical season under Mike Babcock as well, I think they had a really good relationship.

Tampa won a cup by winning 7 game that way

Pittsburgh in 2017 won conferemce final scoring with an average of 1,67 during 6 of 7 game of the series and they won the cup

You can win cup scoring less 1-2-3 everygame, you CANT win cup giving up 3 goal everygame

What an absolutely odd example you used from the Penguins. They averaged well over 2 goals per game in that series and were 1-3 in games where they scored 2 goals or less in a time period where the league was also lower scoring. At the end of the day the Pentuins put the puck in the net, they needed to.

Tampa? Even with the best goaltender in the world and arguably the best Defenseman at that time period, they still needed to produce well over 2 goals per game. Still, which year did they win 7?

You can blame the goaltending all you like, but the reality is when your top players aren't producing and you lack depth, you're going to lose far more often than not.

At the end of the day, I'm placing significantly more blame on the core 4(Only Nylander was actually respectable) who were complete no shows, take up half of the salary cap over a third string league min goaltender.

That's just me though

Severson off the board in that S&T to Columbus. Jarmo doing a hell of a job rebuilding that defense

Ahkshually...

Again, no.
Firstly, 56 didn't make an accusation or pose a difficult question, they asserted that after 7 years players (referring to Matthews) are what they are, implying that it's a foregone conclusion that Matthews will never succeed in the playoffs in Toronto

Secondly, the multiple posters did not make a counter accusation or raise a different issue. They directly refuted 56's assertion by providing numerous examples to the contrary, players that did not have playoff success in their first 7 years but did later in their careers

To which 56 had a tantrum and tried to shut down the conversation that was going against him/her by crying wolf and throwing the name of a fallacy that didn't apply at the wall.

None of this has anything to with trades, Matthews, or the Leafs though.
What you call "raising examples" is indeed classic whataboutism. Those so called examples are exactly the technique alluded to of "raising a different issue". What happened with Sakic, Yzerman, or anyone else in their histories has nothing to do with the inability of OUR core to succeed in the playoffs. In fact, all evidence so far proves otherwise.

Now if there had being examples of our group succeeding in the playoffs elsewhere I could see the point, but that's not the case. I know Marner does have some winning history in Junior.

Anyone else?

Tavares to Columbus was something I had brought up just after we were eliminated. A number of people rightfully pointed out, that Tavares would be unlikely to waive for such a move... and it's also unlikely we would move him.

I suspect it would end up looking something like.

Tavares + Timmins
for
Kuraly + Boqvist + Peeke + 1st/Johnson

Would Columbus do the first to get Tavares?? I don't know... They need a guy now, at least IMO, given Laine and Gaudreau's ages... it isn't a rebuild from scratch situation, and at 3, they aren't getting a NHL ready C.... Carlsson is likely a Winger I'd think in the NHL.

The players they are sending us, don't have incredible value, except Boqvist... but then they need to move some cap too. We didn't get their top two C's, so they moved cap and improved their C depth.

We'd probably only keep one of Boqvist or Liljegren at that point... Boqvist appears to have a higher end offensively, but won't be as good defensively.

We'd draft Carlsson

But, Boqvist/Lily + Murray for McBain.

UFA Signings RoR, Schenn, Acciari
RFA roster signings McBain, Samsonov, Holmberg,

I hope not. Not good enough to play anymore. We may as well re-sign Simmonds at that point.

At least go after Perry if you want an over-the-hill physical vet who may still be able to play for cheap.
If they go after Lucic i figure theyd add Perry on the right. Maybe run Acciari down the middle and try to mirror that TB fourth line

I can't believe Jarmo got a sign and trade for an 8th year and it only cost him a 3rd round pick.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are continuing to aggressively remodel their defense, acquiring Damon Severson from the New Jersey Devils in a sign-and-trade that gives the defenseman a new eight-year, $50 million contract, the teams announced Friday.

Severson, 28, signed the contract worth $6.25 million annually with the Devils, who then traded him to the Blue Jackets for a third-round pick (No. 80) in this month's draft. New Jersey was the only team that could offer Severson, who was a pending free agent, an eight-year contract.

Does Treliving bring Lucic on with a 1x1 deal?
Sounds like a low risk, low reward proposition. Should ideally aim for toughness that can function at a higher level if that's determined to be a need that can make a difference.

Tavares has negative value with his contract and you suggest Boqvist + Peeke + 1st/Johnson?!?! You have lost your mind my friend.
If you think a PPG 1C in this league has negative value, it's not me who has lost my mind.

There isn't much available as a UFA for a 1C, so if Columbus wants to compete, it's going to be JT Miller, hoping they could sign RoR... or not much else. Top C's have a great deal more value than you think.

Sorry, a team desperate for a top C, would be very interested, and pay.

Lucic has been quietly effective in a minor role for awhile now, I'd be fine with that.

If you think a PPG 1C in this league has negative value, it's not me who has lost my mind.

38th in points per game on a stacked PP, not great defensively while making $11 million is negative value. He would absolutely not get that on a 2 year deal if he were a UFA this July.

I really dislike PLD, but if we're on the list of places he's willing to sign he would be the perfect 2C behind Matthews

60-70 points a year, big physical player who has an asshole element to his game
