For one year? Sure. But he's got 2 left and the Leafs need $$$ for the 2 raises the following season.

5M for 2 years is nothing. It fits just fine. We're about to spend 4+ years and probably well over 4M on some players in free agency.

As the July 1 date approaches, allowing players with one year remaining on their current contracts to sign extensions, there’s lots of talk this week that a Matthews one with the Maple Leafs will fall between $12.75 million and $13.5 million annually on a short-term deal, leaving money on the table to offer the club a better chance to win. It’s a far cry from his comment five years ago when discussing Brendan Shanahan’s remarks about the club’s leaders taking less to fit everyone in: “That’s why we have agents, right?” he said back then. As far a Nylander extension goes, the Leafs are taking the same approach the Los Angeles Kings did with Pierre-Luc Dubois, essentially “we can make this work but it has to be at this specific number.” Dubois took the $8.5 million a season on an extension that set off the sign-and-trade with Winnipeg

Change(d) my mind

On no-movement clauses. They are pure evil in a salary-cap system. Good on players who get them included in their contracts but I’d never give them out if I ran a hockey club.

Not a big fan of Smith. He was pretty invisible in the playoffs, not very physical, will get you 50 points, sure but Vegas seems to know what they're doing and they dumped him with no sentiment.

You could do worse, but hopefully we can do better.

It actually doesn't, as the only D they currently have signed beyond next season are Reilly, McCabe, and Timmins. And the D that are UFA/RFA account for a $7.2 million combined cap hit.

So unless the Leafs want to go back to the patchwork model for D, it doesn't work.

Disappointed in Treliving so far.

Why are we even targeting Reaves? He can’t even play. Why is Acciari not a priority? Schenn?

If you resign kampf 2,5M, Acciari 2,5M ... etc... somewhere youre gonna miss money...

If you get reaves at league minimal or close vs acciari at 2,5M its not the same thing

Ehhhh I don't know about that one. Will we? *looks at the list of UFAs* yeah, ok, maybe.

The Leafs currently have 48M of cap space this time next year. Even with the highest of salaries to Matthews and Nylander, they will have 25M. With a Smith 5M player, that's 20M left to replace Brodie and get whoever to bolster it back up. That's without even knowing the cap number, which could go up by 10M. We'll be ok lol People worry about the most absurd and far away things.

What are we supposed to do... only sign bargain bin players to 1 year contracts and hope it works? I don't know.

I don’t find it very concerning, those players are looking to get paid, it’s tough to justify someone like ROR, paying him 5m x 3 year when he’s getting older and not a very fast skater to begin with.

Rather pay a younger player in FA with some quality years abit more money then pay older players big money.
I agree with that. But not sure they wont end up over paying older guys anyway in FA. That Kampf signing for 4 years at 2.5 surprised me. I guess its easy to underappreciate a guy you can trust in the d zone.

If Brad is re-committing to the core 4 (who possess very little jam), I would fill out the rest of my roster with guys who are tough to play against. Losing those guys while bringing back Kampf and maybe Kerfoot is the wrong direction. Would love Reeves but he would be a line killer if playing with skill guys. Look at what Simmonds brought.

If they go with Reeves they might as well bring in Hathaway as well. Have a "killer" fourth line that plays 5-8 mins a game but will bring fear to the other team, creating more space for our skilled guys. It would be nice to have a line which can change the energy of a game with a hit or a fight once again. Haven't had that since the Colton Orr days.

Matthews at 12.6-13.5 for 4-5 years is a great deal. Would be ecstatic

Looking like we are likely to trade Nylander for a Dubois type return. This would give us cap space for some big addition to defense and bring in a lower caliber top 6 F

Have there been Nylander rumours today?

We’ve already done this, a 13th forward tough guy does nothing

I find it hilarious that with everything happening, one of the headlines right now for the Leafs they plan on making a pitch to Ryan Reaves. That's a priority. Ryan Reaves. 36 year old 5 goal scorer Ryan Reaves. And people are happy with that.

We're heading down a path...

Reaves won't be able to defend guys from the press box...like Gudas burying Kampf through the boards or Bennett manhandling Knies. It's on the pansies that play big minutes to stick up for each other, not simply laugh as opposing players emasculate them.

Come on now with Dubas gone we’ll finally get those big changes everyone wanted.

There’s no way we’re just going to bring the core, coach, bottom 6 Cs back and tinker with a physical 13th forward and overpaying for a Zadorov or something. Brad Treliving is 100% in charge of the team with 0 interference and he clearly knows what’s best.

Helps around the locker room, dude is a freak in the weight room.
I think people heavily overrate this stuff. We have guys like Clifford and Clune who do the same thing.

Guys likw Spezza/Acciari/Schenn do the same thing. It's not lije our NHL guys don't work put at all and suddenly realize they have to if Reaves shows up.

Get me phyical guys that can play in the top 9, or play at least a #4D role.
