Do you wish we were not paying Tavares for the last 2 years of his deal right now?

5 years seems to be a bad idea for Matthews.

Sign at 32? He has a big injury history.
Thats only bc JT was overpriced from the very beginning.

Don't understand why literally every other team including the Sens can lock in their stars for 7-8 yrs but we can't.

He signs for 3-5 years
Fine

But so help me God of we give him a massive long retirement contract afterwards i'm going to lose my mind

He wants to be ruthless and max out his value, ok but we better be just as ruthless when he doesn't have the leverage in his favor

Won't happen but I can dream I guess
You know thats going to happen in a few years.
We won't let him walk for nothing in a few years and we ain't trading him unless we are in tank mode for two straight years.

Contracts matter in the NHL. Nylander is on a good contract for what he brings but it’s also an expiring contract and he’s apparently looking to be paid Gaudreau money.
$7M has been a bargain for what he brings.

$9.75M?

A bit too much, but not terrible, especially when you consider that both Marner and Tavares have been making $11M.

If he asks for $9.75M and settles for $9M, we're still not overpaying.

So with no Murray trade materializing tonight and buyout window end approaching do you guys expect him to go on waivers for buyout tomorrow or be back in Toronto?

I guess the Leafs could eat 50% of his deal and try to move him, any rumors of interested teams?

Treliving said that he's fine with keeping Murray around. Not sure if that is the truth or just bargaining...

Either way... I doubt a buyout will be coming. It would mean an extra $2M of dead cap in 2024-2025, just when the extensions for Matthews and Nylander will (hopefully) kick in.

The better options are to either trade him now (retention or with a pick) or just stick out the year.

Knies Matthews Marner
? JT Nylander
Acciari Kampf Jarnkrok
Lafferty Holmberg Perry
Reaves

McCabe Karlsson at double retention
Rielly Schenn
Zadorov Mayfield

Samsonov
Woll

Lilly traded for a young ELC promising forward. Slots into that second line.

Murray has a one way ticket to robidas island. Treliving obviously cant tell the hockey world otherwise the league would step in.

So we have a new GM and he does literally nothing until now? What's the point? No trade, same Coach, No Cap Space....
But there is cap space, they have 11.5m to fill 3 forward spots, and goes up to 15m if they do something with Murray. Not sure how they improve the team via trade now, unless they trade next years 1st round pick.

Scary issue is with a weaker FA class, Toronto is going to try to fill it's holes in FA. They essentially need IMO:

1 Top 6 Forward
1 3rd line winger
1 4th line wingers

1 dman (assuming he's not okay with the current d-core and everyone signed).

I'm worried Treliving found Kyle's long term roster plan in his desk.
I'm.surprised the fenway group didn't look how dubas tied his own hands
Criticizing treliving for a job houdini couldn't rectify without a lot of smoke and mirrors is ludicrous
The leafs have to make a home run trade somehow or run it back and hope
we have a good spring

Concerning that all the guys that were brought in to make the team harder to play against (ROR, Accardi, Schenn) appear to be on their way back out.

Guys like Kampf and Jarnkrok are just so vanilla with next to no bite. The thought of bringing Kerfoot back is … confusing.

Tavares - Matthews - Nylander (scoring)
Knies - RoR - Marner (match up)
Lafferty - Kampf - Acciari or, Wood, Donato if Acciari doesn’t sign (dzone)
Robertson/Marlie/Project - Holmberg - Jarnkrok (cheeky youth line)

Comtois as potential project

Jarnkrok easily pops up the lineup when needed and pp2

Rielly - Schenn
McCabe - Liljegren
Brodie - Timmins
Gio

If we could flip Timmins + Pick + Murray in some combination for someone like Zadorov maybe…

Rielly - Schenn
McCabe - Brodie
Zadorov - Liljegren
Gio

In theory, they really only need 1 top 6 forward (20+ scorer?) and 1 bottom line forward. They also probably need a good RHD to replace Holl in some capacity. The other positions can be filled internally. Is that good enough overall? Probably not but I don't think it should be too hard to fill 3 spots for ~9M (after re-signing Samsonov).

Should be a fun ride the next handful of days.
D-day for two of the three amigos, all the front offices in one place, buyout window, free agency around the corner.
And it’s been pretty quiet on the leaf front.

Engvall turns Kampf from a 4C to a 3C so I actually have no issue with it.
Maybe the plan is to sign guys up and actually spread the scoring around. Kampf played well with Willy; either Pontus or Calle on the other flank should make for a balanced line - where Willy can just be Willy.

Toronto is the only team that has to deal with this. It's so bizarre. Every other star signs for 8 years without even blinking. And if they have issues with their team, they ask for a trade and then sign with the new team.

Nothing about it makes any sense. It's all mental gymnastics.
Matthews seems like one of those guys who maybe doesn't love the game as much as other players but treats it as more of a career. Clearly trying to maximize his earnings, by far his number 1 priority

I don’t find it very concerning, those players are looking to get paid, it’s tough to justify someone like ROR, paying him 5m x 3 year when he’s getting older and not a very fast skater to begin with.

Rather pay a younger player in FA with some quality years abit more money then pay older players big money.

well, the picked wasn't used to help dump Murray so I'm curious what we do with him now.
Buyout or maybe we retain a bit of salary to move him (like the Hayes and Johansen trades).
Bit of a disappointing off-season so far but it's still early.

who is out there that would be a better upgrade on ROR for us that we can sign as a ufa?

Imo ROR gives us a lot of options and also leadership and experience. I would not give him a 5 year deal but 2-4 years depending on the cap hit. He may like Toronto and the opportunities here. We also have a great support team with doctors, trainers, nutritionists, etc. And are a competitive team.

Yes he isnt quick but he is still a solid two way center/winger with some offensive upside. If it was up to me I would also go hard after Toews.

Team lacks character and leadership. Bringing in players like ROR and Toews would go a long way to fixing that. I think they would be hungry to win and given their age leafs may represent their best shot.

Knies. Matthews. Marner
Tavares. ROR. Nylander
Robertson. Toews. Jarnkrok
Holmberg. Kampf. Acciari
Lafferty

Imo ^ is an upgrade from last year both in skill and leadership/work ethic.
