What is the benefit of this if he is going on LTIR anyways?
Is it just that the cap space becomes available to you immediately instead of waiting until camp to put him on?
If Muzzin is permanent LTIR they can use that during the offseason, yes.
But, using LTIR makes a huge difference at TDL, which is why some teams.are loathe to do so.
If a team has to use LTIR during the season they can't pro-rate any accumulated cap space for the deadline, because they won't have accrued any.
So any trades would have to be 1:1 cap in:cap out.
If they don't use LTIR and are able to accrue cap space, that cap space can be pro-rated to the contract of the player Roughly it works out to 1/4 of whatever the AAV of the players contract is because TDL takes place roughly 3/4 of the way through the season.
So if a team has $2M on accrued cap space they can trade for an $8M player at TDL.
If they had to use LTIR, like the Leafs did last year, that $8M player can only be traded for if they have $8M in LTIR space available.
The reason for that is because the salary for the incoming player is coming out of the LTIR pool, not the $82.5M salary cap allocation for each team.
Hope that helps.
