Even CHL teams have their trusted vets. The difference is that there they have 2 years under their belts, or even only 1, instead of 5-15.
We see it everywhere, it is a human nature thing. Coaches develop certain biases, pro and con, toward players and favour the ones they have developed a level of trust in. Whether that trust is deserved or not makes no difference.
Better coaches adjust those biases and perceptions as the players and the situations evolve, worse ones keep going back to something that worked once upon a time. The trouble with Maurice is that he seems to be in that latter group. It is individual players, line/pairing combinations, systems and tactics.
IMO, he is out of ideas. He just seems to thrash around wildly looking for something to work. CSW seemed to work at one time so he stuck with it for years before finally moving on this year. As usual, the change was forced. This time by Covid instead of injury, but not by him. Now he has gone back to it. It appeared to work for 1 game. How long will that 1 game have him thinking it is a good combination?
Everybody and his dog can see what an abomination it is - except Maurice. KFC not only scored the 2 goals in that game, but he did most of the work too. But Scheifele and Wheeler got 1 and 2 assists so the line had 5 points. Must be a good combination, right? Chemistry!
