Yzerman on Blashill....

“Jeff Blashill is a good hockey coach. He ran a really good program,” Yzerman said in a press conference on Monday afternoon. “I can certainly attest to what has been our program for the last three years because it’s been dictated by me. You cannot judge Jeff Blashill on the Detroit Red Wings’ record. I think you judge it on how he ran this program and how he conducted himself, and he was extremely professional in that.” He added: “Pardon the expression, but he ran a good program. This wasn’t a complete shitshow.”

Yzerman points to the defense as the biggest sore spot. “We’ve been unable to, with the group that we’ve had, specifically in that area, to get better,” Yzerman said. “To get our team to play, both individually and collectively, as a sounder defensive hockey team. And it’s been three years we’ve been trying."

“It hasn’t been a lack of discussion, a lack of effort on the coaching staff’s behalf, or trying. We just haven’t been able to do it. I look at this now as - that’s an area that’s going to need to improve. In order to do that, I’m going to bring in a new coach and see if he can’t do that with the group that we have.”
Same problems Maurice had with us. Please god no

Well, just add this to the pile of disappointing news from this off-season.

Cassidy/Trotz/Monty were my preferred candidates (in that order). I was fairly certain Cassidy wasn't going to come to Winnipeg, so I wasn't that upset. Trotz news was sad; however, completely understandable. I was pretty sure we were going to hire Montgomery... yet here we are.

I'll save my reservations until I see how the first 1/4 of the season plays out. This feels like we're going to have a high draft pick next year, perhaps we should load up for a quick tank and try to get lucky.

Just watching an interview with him, he's not as smooth as Maurice but he sure seems able to talk a lot while saying nothing, just like Maurice.

Does Chevy see that we had problems defensively? I really think defense might be Chevy's biggest blind spot. And if you can't see the problem, you can't fix the problem. Blashill might not be able to blind Chevy with brilliance, but he could baffle him with bullshit.

I warned people about this.....if trotz was taking so long it meant his heart wasnt into coaching and the jets needed to give him a deadline...but in typical jets fashion they were too nice and let trotz mull on his decision for weeks...and in the meantime all the top coaching options got gobbled up by other teams....the last remaining sought after coach was montgomery and it looks like he is going to boston. Jets are now left with coaches with poor track records and coaches with ties to the moose or jets 1.0.

the last 12 months have been a disaster for chevy (schmidt and dillons contracts), cant even fire maurice, replacing him with a dud in lowry, cant sign dubois long term, havent addressed any locker room issues yet, looking at scraps for the new coach. Yet somehow he manages to get a contract extension.

I'll assume you watch the Wings a lot. Thoughts on Blashill's coaching?

The players on their farm team seemed to grasp his systems. He led the Griffins to a Calder Cup.
admittedly not in recent years to have a super qualified opinion as the Jets have gotten better and keened my interest. did watch a bit more this year since the youth got integrated into the team

from what i've seen, his PP and PK have both been pretty brutal. typical coach perhaps not breaking in younger players effectively (svech, mantha and tatar come to mind), but i thought he's done a great job with others such as larkin and bertuzzi for instance. is he the fall guy for a team going for a rebuild :dunno:. he put the youngsters in prominent roles this year, but they're high picks so that's usually expected (raymond, seider notably). i've brought this up before in regards to perfetti.... he played larkin 1st year as a winger primarily, next year as a part-time C, then fully took-over as a full-time C. i can see similar path for Perfetti, but i think Larkin is a bit more physically gifted comparatively to play the position (size, a bit more stoutly built and speed/skating one of his strengths). still not impossible for Perfetti to transition there.

my yikes was moreso for the fact we went from Trotz watch to basically this list of candidates. Jeff Blashill is 48 so he matches the young coach narrative that everyone around here wants :sarcasm:

How hungry is he? Like, what's his appetite like? We're asking for "young HUNGRY" coaches on here.

I know I have been "joking" about TNSE and Chevy taking far too long to do this, but other than potentially Montgomery, I personally don't feel the Jets have missed out on hiring a coach because IMO none of the coaches the other teams have hired, were ever going to come to Winnipeg. Did we interview them? Maybe. But it doesn't mean we had a chance at hiring them. JMO.

Other than Trotz, I'm not disappointed because the Jets are the wishy-washy team of the NHL and that's the coach they will end up hiring. Someone OK at the job, but nothing to get excited about.

yeah...blah. That's pretty much where I'm at. As it stands right now, I suspect Brunette would take the pity position with Florida rather than come here.

Doesn't Montgomery have a reputation of getting the best of players and over achieving? If so why would Boston hire him? Aren't they trying to tank?
