Is there a relevant quote here or is this speculation? The Holder making the call has a non-specific meaning to me and I don’t want to put words in anyone’s mouth.

He said that it was the look. It's actually fairly standard fare for those kinds of fakes. The call is usually made on the field by either the holder (punter in the case of punts) or the long snapper unless they draw up a specific play. There's no way to know what the look is until they're on the field. Same thing for all the swinging gates we see on PAT's. It's worked out with the special teams coordinators, but that call is made on the field by the players based on the look they're given.

A smart coach isn't going to force his players to run that fake if they think they're going to run into a brick wall.

Right. But then the call is to go for it and it has a trap door. That’s still going for it, which is why I was confused.

The call is whatever the looks are that they go through in special teams meetings, or during the game. Maybe he favors the fake, but that's essentially every field goal (or punt) where a fake can be reasonable. Maybe they decide before the game, or as a general rule when the situation calls for the call to not be made, but whoever made that call was very unlikely to be aware of the analytics in the moment.

Yes, there is the option to get out of it. But if you don't want the fake there, you take it off of the table. I don't believe for a second that Lanning both declined to take the option off and wanted to kick the FG in that situation. That would require incredible incompetence.

He’s defending the call. The incompetence is taking Dillon Gabriel off the field on 4th down. Perfectly reasonable to force a team to have to get a touchdown when they haven’t proven they could move the ball in the air. It was overthought and they got away with it. If it was 30-27, different story, you’re less sure about getting a stop. Wisconsin didn’t score in the 2nd half. Make their job harder, not yours.
 
The auto bid for conference champions is going to hose someone in year one of the 12 team format. BYU is not a very good football team and the fighting Travis Hunters are going to house them in Arlington.

The least enviable position in college football right now is the two teams that are going to have to play in Atlanta for the SECCG. The loser of that game is probably going to miss out on the playoff. Right now, it looks like Alabama v. Texas/Texas A&M.

Indiana better not get beat badly next week in Columbus or they're in trouble, imo. Coaches are already publicly lobbying for SOS arguments, and there's is abysmal. The SEC probably deserves four teams, but that would sacrifice a fourth B1G team or a second ACC team.

They had run of four straight head coaches to get promoted to the higher levels in Golden, Addazio, Rhule, & Collins. Since then they’ve now fired the previous two in Carey & Drayton.

Probably just laws of average for that program when you’re cycling through coaches every 3-4 years or so. It’s probably just harder to build a program like that in today’s era of roster management too. What Golden & Rhule did there is probably harder to pull off now a days because you’re probably gonna have to fight off teams for good players.

The CCG are just pointless at least as far as the SEC & Big Ten go.

If the Big Ten goes chalk. What even is the point of needing Oregon & Ohio State to play again in the CCG? Does Ohio State actually have to win that game to be a no doubter or risk falling back into a mix where the committee could start weighing against teams below them that they were once clearly ahead of? If it doesn’t matter for either team going into it then what is the point?

Like the Big 12 CCG will actually likely be a relevant data point for whatever team comes out of it. I don’t think you can say that for the SEC & Big Ten. Their regular season schedules will have more or less sorted itself out for you.
 
Sounds to me like they floated the Ray Lewis thing to see what the feedback would be and it went about as you would expect.
