Alright, somebody will have to explain this one to me
Tychonick played 5 years of college and went pro at the end of last year
Why is Ottawa retaining his rights?
According to Marlies announcement, Ottawa rights expired. Would love to know CapFriendly explanation.

CF says August 15 2024 now

Yeah, but that's their default rights extension for a college player returning to school, which may no longer apply in this case.

edit: If the defected player clause is being applied here, then Ottawa's rights to Tychonick would expire 14 days after his AHL contract ends. Which would be July 14th 2024, assuming he doesn't sign an extension prior to then.

Curious as to who signs Jay O Brien.

Lazy assumption on my end to wonder if the Sharks might have interest. GM Mike Grier is a BU alum and long time head scout and current senior advisor Tim Burke is based in Boston. Director of player personnel Scott Fitzgerald is based in Boston as well. Then again, they perhaps have seen plenty of O'Brien and might prefer to keep spots open for recent draftees.

Fitzgerald, formerly Chief College Scout for the Boston Bruins, is now the Director of Player Personnel. According to the San Jose Sharks’ press release, Fitzgerald “will focus on pro and amateur scouting, including potential top-two round selections at the NHL Draft and college free agents.”

If O'Brien gets an ELC, it'll be for two years which could bridge for when some 2022 picks (Bystedt/Lund) and 2023 picks (Smith/Musty/Halttunen) turn pro. O'Brien would be 25 going on 26 after the ELC, so they'd probably cut bait if he didn't pan out.

That said, I'm not sure the Barracuda have a spot and I'm also not sure if a team would look at O'Brien as a C or RW. Assuming Bystedt returns to Sweden and Haltunnen plays in London, that might free up a spot.

And maybe the Islanders could be a match? Not sure if Lou's maintained a friendship with BU coach / former Devil Jay Pandolfo. Lou's traded quite a few picks from 2020-23, so there seems to be an opening in Bridgeport. I saw another Islanders beat writer suggesting that they might target Robert Mastrosimone since he's a local kid.

Isles have used 44/50 contracts with no pending RFAs to sign, so they have the space to sign like 2 more players as most teams like to have at least 3-4 spots open heading into the season just in case to add players or sign their NCAA players after their seasons are done.

Figure most of these UFAs would ideally target somewhere close to home, if they are from the NE USA. Any of Phi, Bos, NYI, NJ, NYR, Pit, Was, Buf make sense given their AHL clubs are fairly close to the NHL team. They are going to be spending 23-24 in the A.

Nice, but they're a bit less than $500K over the cap.

So, as you implied, they would not be major additions and would be buried in the AHL.

These guys would be spending the upcoming season in the A anyways. If they were at the hype of a Vesey or J. Schultz back in the day, they'd be signed by day 1 of free agency and would be on an NHL roster this fall.

I mean It's a Marlies signing so he's not Leafs property yet but you have to think that's coming and If it there is nothing wrong wirh a free prospect
Toronto marlies, Toronto leafs keeps a interesting prospect close by to see if he’s a ascending older prospect with his decent year last season

seems like Luke Loheit (Sens' rights expired) won't be signing this offseason,
rather will return to UMD for 5th year and wear the C

"DULUTH — Minnesota Duluth fifth-year senior captain Luke Loheit and Bulldogs junior defenseman Will Francis had been skating together ..."
