Dolan did screw so much up with them under Walsh and had awful hirings in Thomas and Phil Jackson, but Perry and Mills seem to have things going in the right direction. His hiring and meddling with the team is what cost him. They've only been on the job for two drafts and two sets of free agency. When they got the jobs, they were cap strapped and other than Porzingis, had no younger players making an impact.
Now, they cleared out KP when things went completely south and made a good trade. The future firsts are a beautiful thing, especially if Dallas whiffs on getting another player to go with KP and Doncic. With the way the west is, that could end up being lottery picks (2021 pick is unprotected and 2023 is top 10 protected). The 2021 pick could have huge value.
Two drafts, Mitchell Robinson and Knox showing promise, now Barrett being the #1 overall player at the beginning of the season being taken at #3. Signed Trier and that has turned out great. Not sure if he is a starter long term, but finding a bench scorer as an UDFA is a big deal. Got DSJ, who Phil should have drafted (although the talk was that the Knicks were contemplating Frank and Donovan Mitchell, which I'm not 100% sure is true), and now have given the team the flexibility to add two top free agents or go shopping for some younger RFAs or UFAs.
The Knicks franchise is in it's best position since just before the Melo trade which ruined the build that Walsh made. Went from deep with younger players to having an older roster and a limited window. The AD trade would have done the same. Glad they learned that lesson.
