Navy fired Coach Ken. My heart hurts.
If Gladchuk made this decision it’s a poor one. If Coach Ken did then good luck to Coach Ken. Regardless, renewing my season tickets is not a guarantee.
I’m no fan of Gladchuk. He should go not Coach Ken. And all you said about the teams struggles and issues over the last couple years were a factor, but they’ve also haven’t had a QB that could run their entire offense on a consistent basis since 2019. QB is the most important position in football but it’s 10x more important for Navy. And it’s hard for a team like Navy to win without one. That falls on Coach Ken and why he is gone.Gladchuk sucks. He has a massive ego and his bullshit actively hurts the Academy. He’s the reason I stopped donating to Navy Athletics. I will renew my season tickets the minute he’s fired. He’s just such a shortsighted egomaniac who takes down years as a personal affront. He did the same shit with Coach Meade in lacrosse. He caused the program significant embarrassment last year when he threw a temper tantrum and fired Ivan Jasper in the locker room. He just sucks, no other way to put it.
Navy has been bad the last few years because of massive attrition during Covid. Only 18 of the 60 midshipmen who started I-Day for the class of 2022 will end up graduating. They started one senior yesterday. The beginning of this year was tough but they beat #20 UCF on the road and lost by three to Notre Dame. They were getting better and on track to be much better next year. Ken deserves better than Chet, the Brigade deserves better, and fans and alumni of Navy deserve better.

Cut blocking rules are also a factor but the rule change is a good one. Primarily because the majority of football games these days are played on field turf and cut blocking on field turf is dangerous. Leads to a lot of lower leg injuries.Yeah no doubt they’ve had some dull years at QB but my friends who played ball at Navy almost all have said the main issue with the QB play has been the play of the offensive line. Really hard to make the right read when the plays aren’t blocked correctly and the QB doesn’t have confidence in his reads. Navy’s formula for success is starting junior and senior laden teams who can run and block the triple option in their sleep. And, the bullshit new NCAA rules against cut blocking the last few seasons have hurt a lot too. Do we really think the two guys — Ken and Ivan Jasper — who were most responsible for plugging in a new QB who went on to be a prolific option QB almost every year for 25 years suddenly forgot how to recruit and coach QBs? Highly unlikely.
Almost all of the issues lead back to Covid. Air Force is on probation for what they did during Covid. Army played 17 redshirts this season including their starting QB. Navy did none of that. No guys were “turnbacks” like at Army, they didn’t send 40+ juniors and seniors home for a “gap year” like they did at Air Force. Ken played by the rules and Chet f***ed him for it. It’s embarrassing.

There were a lot of factors that went into the poor showing by the team the last 3 years. In the end, the AD made a poor decision. A decision I’d bet has something to do with the DC but we will see how that shakes out.
Football players wear long cleats. When cut blocking on field turf the cleats dig into the turf as a defensive player pushes off to rush up field, then a O-lineman dives at the legs of a defender. Foot stays put and the upper parts of the lower leg bend. Leads to ankle, leg and knee injuries.I don’t understand how cut blocks are any more dangerous than tackling a guy below the waist if the blocker is face to face with the defender. And the issue then is not with the play itself but with the field it’s being played on which seems misguided.
I have a good friend who played defense at Navy in the PJ years and the first thing he said after the Ken news was that he hopes we can keep Newberry around. For my money he’s the best defensive coordinator in the AAC. What he’s done at Navy has been nothing short of tremendous. If they lose him and Ken in the same offseason then Chet should be fired immediately.
I too hate field turf. Field turf is how I ended up needing knee surgery. My cleat got caught when I was trying to move laterally and my knee buckled. Also, those little black balls they fill the field with are comprised almost entirely of used tires. I’m very much in agreement that field turf is trash.Football players wear long cleats. Every game it seemed prior to the rule change at least one D-lineman playing against Navy went down with a leg injury. Mostly not serious but some very serious. My dad, who knows little about football, would ask why do D-lineman get hurt so much playing Navy and I’d respond “cut blocking”. My daughters have pairs of cleats and turf shoes. Cleats for grass and turf shoes for turf. Unfortunately all of my oldest daughters soccer games are on turf at the high school level. This past year a girl on my daughters team had her ankle broke right in front of me. She was wearing cleats running up field with the ball and a defender slid tackled her. Foot stayed planted in the turf and the defenders momentum snapped her ankle. I heard it pop. I worried the same would happen to my daughter this past year. Luckily it didn’t.
Besides potential for serious leg injuries my daughter has gotten terrible rug rash from simply falling down on turf. She plays striker, she is tiny and fast. She gets tripped a lot by slow defenders. I attached a picture of her knee. Field turf is terrible stuff. I am very passionate about hating field turf.
As for Newberry, my guess is Newberry was leaving after this season and Gladchuk chose to keep him. He will be the new HC. I’ve seen a lot of Navy games over the years. Defense was never their strong suit prior to Newberry’s hiring. What he’s done with the tiny players he can recruit is amazing. Having said that, if he is the new HC I don’t expect him to stay at Navy if he has success. 3-5 years and he’ll be gone for a better job.
Mike Leach has passed away. He was a legend in college football and his Air Raid offense changed the game. In honor of him, here’s one of his many awesome sound bites. I know they say this a lot when someone passes but with Mike Leach it’s 100% true: the dude was one of a kind.

I agree with most of this, but the cut blocking had to go.Yeah no doubt they’ve had some dull years at QB but my friends who played ball at Navy almost all have said the main issue with the QB play has been the play of the offensive line. No he wasn't. He was rumored to take the Maryland job though but randy Edsall was hired in his steadThat’s horrible. Just like that. UMD alum, I believe?
He wanted the MD job and MD thought he was too much of a lightning rod so they hired Randy Esdall. Mike Leach along with the heyday of Under Armour could have put MD football on the map.No he wasn't. He was rumored to take the Maryland job though but randy Edsall was hired in his stead
"Sooo Wiz...."“Why isn’t the consequences of our own actions coming to pass.” - The 2022-23 Wizards, probably
Signing a top 30-40 player past his prime to a supermax deal was a bad idea, who could have seen that coming?
They need to burn it to the ground. Trade everyone, hire a new GM, start over."Sooo Wiz...."
I was fine with letting him walk. Also sounds like Kuzma wants out. Goodwin seems like a decent player especially on the D side. Have no idea why Rui is out so long I don't recall seeing when he got injured.
