The good news... we're likely to get a 1st round pick if TB stays healthy

So do more people want Tampa to win because we will get the 1st round pick? Or do people hate them so much that they don't care and prefer they lose.

I really despise Callahan and it would make me sick to see him win a cup (although nothing can be worse then then pens), but I prefer the 1st.

You should do more research, instead of just negatively reacting to my point (which again, is very likely true). Here is one easy to read piece and you can find many more.
I am not negatively reacting. I am surprised that the thought process seemed to be that 30 years old is over the hill and that a player can no longer be in his prime at 30. At last check, there were 30 year olds that have had very nice years.

@Faceless i think you missed a huge reason the league has gotten younger: it’s flush with talent, and new talent is always coming in.

When you’re in a shallow league, a player who hits around 30 and takes that speed and reaction time hit, that player can adjust his game and maybe hold onto his career as a diminished player for a few more years. When that same player gets to that same point in a deep league, most likely there’s a younger player who is just becoming as good as the older player used to be.

It’s not the only component, but it’s a big one. Yeah, that younger player is also probably cheaper so the Cap does matter. But you can’t ignore that the talent depth in the league is better than its ever been.

1st over everything and I would not mind watching McD hoist the cup. He gave us tons of great memories 80% of this leagues fans would kill for those years.

I would hesitate to use Zucc and Buch being absent as any form of excuse.

A) Zucc will not be here shortly... being without him now, is what life will look like post trade

B) Neither player would've made much of a difference. Maybe one of them scores the goal Fogarty blew, but again, we were outclassed in ALL 3 zones the entire game.

Other teams are starting to play their games at a faster pace... the off-season rust is coming off. This fact will only intensify as we approach the spring.

I think we see more and more of these types of games in the immediate future.

Please point to where I said it's impossible for someone 30 or older to have a nice season? Hint...I didn't. What I'm saying is prime is no longer inclusive of 30's. There are very few players who perform well into their 30's. Moreover, we are talking about McDonagh specifically, who, when his contract begins will be exactly 30 years old. His contract finishes when he's 36. There is every reason to believe that his best years are quite likely behind him and that by the end of that contract he will be a shell of his former self.

Is it possible he defies this, sure, but I wouldn't bet money on it.

30 years old is not necessarily over the hill. But when we're talking about long contracts beginning at 30, the likelihood is, you're paying for a player that quite likely is going to spend the majority of the contract on the wrong side of that hill.

Good point and I agree. I just don't really understand how people can argue that 30 and beyond is prime. I don't see any evidence of this. And in fact, the players producing at high rates at those ages (Ovechkin, etc) are generally ones who were top level talents. It's not impossible to imagine McD sustaining a respectable level of play for quite some time as his talent level is really high, but he is certainly at an age when I would be hesitant to give him big money (which is why I was very happy when we moved him).

I never watched the game but having those two guys out adds guys like Letterri Fogarty and Schneider to the lineup who arent anywhere near as good of players so it does hurt, having said that Tampa is probably the best team in the league on paper so us beating them would likely have to do with a lot of things goin our way. A team like tampa can lose a couple players and fill in with good players we cant so injurys , especially on the wings hurt us big time due to our lack of depth.

Maybe they will feel the same and believe a revamped Marc Staal or Brendan Smith is the answer ;)

I've been predicting Smith to Toronto since the start and with them getting pushed around by Boston and Smith having been a part of babcocks wings I could see a fit, but we would likely have to hold salary and I'd be ok with that.

Probably true.

I have enjoyed watching this team for the most part this season, but if Hank's game slips a bit, as it has the last few games, this season is going to get hard to watch.

I’d love to see Mcdonagh and G win a Cup. I’d even love it more for us to get a first rounder out of it. Definitely rooting hard for Tampa. And I also despise Callahan.

I really want to see Tampa win the Cup in a game 7 with Girardi on the ice in the final minute, like how he and McDonagh were on the ice when the Rangers had their goalie pulled last night.

Why do you hate Callahan, and why would you not want the 1st round pick?

It’s definitely a cap era issue. The OP was incorect that players wear down faster these days.

On the contrary, with premptive procedures, training, nutriton, etc. the older players in the league look younger than ever.

Their wiseness , however, at some point becomes cap detrimental.

It's almost as if players have ups and downs all season long.

For me, it seems like he goes 15-20 games where he is MIA.

For a guy that gets the minutes he does in the situations he gets them, those stretches should be quite a bit shorter.
