Got into Mahogany Rush in the late 70s, we used to blast the live album in our weight room in high school! Can’t tell you how many times our AD used to come down the hall and ream us out! Peeled the paint off the walls! Once heard PT in an interview saying Snorting Whiskey, Drinking Cocaine was the stupidest song he ever wrote. Made me laugh my ass off! But I sure did dig it and still do!!!Marino's version of All Along the Watchtower rivals Hendrix. He is an awesome guitarist and I believe he was self-taught. Huge Habs fan as well.
Anyone who can write a song called Snortin Whiskey, Drinkin Cocaine is all right in my books.
Saw both of them several times.
I enjoy both versions yet many claim Dylans is the best.Marino's version of All Along the Watchtower rivals Hendrix. He is an awesome guitarist and I believe he was self-taught. Huge Habs fan as well.

In those days in the USA there was very little airplay from bands not from the states, some exceptions of course but more or less ignorant.Gonna light a fire for us old-timers out there. 2 most underrated guitar heroes ever are 2 good Canadian boys, Frank Marino from Montreal and Pat Travers from Toronto! IMO, these two blow away all the so called guitar heroes. Never got their due, at least not stateside. A crying shame!!!!
There were quite a few Canadian bands that never made it south of the borderIn those days in the USA there was very little airplay from bands not from the states, some exceptions of course but more or less ignorant.
True, very true!In those days in the USA there was very little airplay from bands not from the states, some exceptions of course but more or less ignorant.
All of these bands I enjoy very much,April Wine is top 5 for me and Triumph is one of the very best. Trooper I got into because of the Randy Bachman connection, always a big BTO fan! The others you mention I got to later by happenstance.. Being from upstate, I was fortunate enough to hear the Hip, still listen to them daily! Had to dig to find Blue Rodeo and The Sheepdogs, like them enthusiastically! There were quite a few Canadian bands that never made it south of the border

I also heard Frankie Marino was self-taught, that he learned guitar as a teenager while recovering in the hospital. Apparently he was bedridden and played laying down, with the guitar resting on his stomach. Fun fact: The name, Mahogany Rush, was coined during an acid trip in Westmount. Where, he raced the streets between the mansions, he saw a blur of countless stately front doors all made from mahogany. Or so I've been told.Marino's version of All Along the Watchtower rivals Hendrix. He is an awesome guitarist and I believe he was self-taught. Huge Habs fan as well.

Great musician.
I give up. Who? Steve Shutt?I have heard the same story about how he learnt guitar.
TRIVIA QUESTION :
Which Hall of Fame Canadian was a key in the formation of Rush ?
Great guess.I give up. Who? Steve Shutt?
I knew the three were connected by the same high school. But I never knew Shutt introduced Alex to Geddy. Cool! >Great guess.
Yes, he introduced Alex to Geddy when they were in high school.
On 2112 , they thank Larry Robinson and Steve Shutt for the sticks,
The guitar saga. For those curious, remember that Gibson Les Paul at $115. that I ordered from GuitarCenter?
After a few weeks of nothing happening, I called them. The guy right away knew about the fake website and the absurd prices. That particular model is in the $2,500 range. They've tried to track down the owner but it's in China. I contacted Paypal and they reversed the charges no questions asked. So, it's really puzzling why this site exists in the first place. I'm kind of disappointed I didn't get something out of it, a cheap copy even, nada, nothing, rien, niet.
Yup! got a few stories about Frank and his band mates back in the day and saw Travers of all places in some small club in Clearwater Florida in the mid? 80's. It was a pretty fun club.Marino's version of All Along the Watchtower rivals Hendrix. He is an awesome guitarist and I believe he was self-taught. Huge Habs fan as well.

Tip of the iceberg. How was the Guess who and BTO received in their heyday? There were quite a few Canadian bands that never made it south of the border

Who? Oh right, the grab a soda guy. Better forgotten.Yikes! How could I forget Kim Mitchell!
Guess Who was very well received in the USA, thanks to their 1970 monster hit in the States "American Woman." Indeed, the Canadian band proved so popular with American youth, they were invited to perform at the White House. (But did not perform the song "American Woman," as it was far too political. ) Just like Johnny Cash, who earlier that year, also invited to perform at the White House, tactfully declined to sing "Welfare Cadilac."Tip of the iceberg.
