With regards to the recapture penalty, if Webber retires in 5 years, does Montreal also have his 7.8mil/year on the hook + NSH has his penalty? Or is the 7.8mil/year a wash?

Found my answer.

Yes but what is the answer?

Holy hyperbole, Weber had yet another 20 goal 50 point season where he played above average defensively and played 25+ a night, he was top 10 in Norris votes again too.

I know you guys really liked Subban, but please, don't act like Weber is dog crap now that he's 30.

Both guys are elite dmen, but one is 27 and one will be 31 in 6 weeks.
that is significant.

and the habs still carry his 7.8 cap hit till 2026

If he retires, there's not cap hit for Montreal (unless he does it in the first three years). He signed this multi-year deal before 35-years-old as stated by Natey in a post in this thread.

:D

Yes, there are some on HFboards more intelligent and savvy than NHL general managers. Many people associated with the NHL as managers, coaches, analysts, etc. are genuinely incompetent. I don't know what kind of blunder you'd have to see a GM make to recognize that many of these guys didn't get their jobs on merit or savviness.

Seriously. Trading Seguin for Eriksson? The ridiculous contracts handed out on July 1? Cliff Fletcher mistaking Jeff Finger for someone else?

There are numerous examples of incompetent GMs.

For further evidence see Vancouver: even the most basic fan can see that their best option is to deal away players and rebuild -- yet they're meant to be dipping heavily into free agency and just shipped off a bunch of a young assets for an average defenseman.

Not a big fan of PK even after his accomplishments (largely assisted by Price) Good trade for the Habs even if Weber has an insane contract.

My understanding is that the cap hit will be charged to the Predator if Weber retired at 34/35 year old.

i don't get why the habs didn't trade for hall

subban for hall would have been a far better trade for both teams. the habs still haven't upgraded up front and acquiring weber is pretty much a lateral move

id rather have weber right now, plus he makes 1.1per less, but the problem is the age and contract length. with weber being 4yrs older and his contract running till he's like 41.
i still think weber will be a great player for many more years, i just don't know about those last 3 or 4yrs.

The habs will be worst off if they trade Subban for Hall. At least Weber is a 1D.

Anyone seeing this idiot in Sportsnet saying that race played a significant role in the trading of PK Subban? He also was willing to acknowledge that they are getting back a great defenseman who is a "3 time Norris trophy winner".

Yikes.

Not sure if posted, but here is the recapture penalty for Nashville if Weber retires early.

2016-2017 (31): 2,457,200 per for 10 years
2017-2018 (32): 2,730,222 per for 9 years
2018-2019 (33): 3,071,500 per for 8 years
2019-2020 (34): 3,510,286 per for 7 years
2020-2021 (35): 4,095,333 per for 6 years
2021-2022 (36): 4,914,400 per for 5 years
2022-2023 (37): 6,143,000 per for 4 years
2023-2024 (38): 8,190,667 per for 3 years
2024-2025 (39): 12,286,000 per for 2 years
2025-2026 (40): 24,572,000 per for 1 year

Those penalties will change in the next CBA, I can guarantee you that.

At the absolute worst he'll be a better Hal Gil or a current Zedno Chara when he's older. Of course, his contract won't be great by then, but he should give Montreal several good years as a no.1 followed by a few as a solid 2nd pairing guy.

And Subban outpaced him on a vastly inferior team, carrying the corpse of Markov on his back along the way. Weber had no business getting any Norris votes this season. I will, however, qualify that by saying I, in no way, think he's "dog crap." But considering who we traded for him, this is an awful day for the Habs. Even if Weber turns out better next season, he's still on the decline.
