Why do people think this is so bad for the Habs? IMO Habs got better, and slightly won this trade. Shake-up for both teams.

To be frank, this could have totally come down to which type of player you want Mikhail Sergachev to grow beside. I chose Weber every time. Sergachev has serious potential and I can't wait to see

Sergachev - Weber
Beaulieu - Juulsen
Mete-Petry

HFboards at its best. "Forget winning, we have prospects to mold!"

Taken from Preds forums:

The Preds currently have roughly $28.7m in cap recapture penalty accrued for Weber - from salary+bonuses paid in excess of his cap hit. That was going to go down starting the year after next once his salary+bonuses dipped below the cap hit, but now that we've traded him, it won't. It'll stay constant.

This is not an issue so long as Weber does not retire before the contract ends. If he does, though, it gets bad. Really, really bad:

(Total cap recapture figure taken from work done by BFC999, per a spreadsheet he was showing me earlier. Per-year penalty calculations are my own.)

Just seems really really huge. So basically Weber could retire at the end of 24-25 and Predators would get a cap hit of 30 million?

Weber is older, not as good and is on a massive contract that is going to destroy the habs for many years to come. on top of that, good luck to weber when he has an off-game. he's been in nashville his whole career. the habs fans will tear him apart when he plays crappy.

How do you support your statement? I look at the stats and Weber has twice as much blocked shots as Subban (160 vs 80) ... I love Weber as a pure offensive D!!

Numerous articles/posts have been made on this topic, search it up it's available.

Girardi and Russell almost have triple the blocked shots as Subban. You're right, they're great defenders!!!

Bergevin will look great when his successor has to clean up this mess he's making next summer.

What an unfathomably stupid trade, Habs fans have every right to bring out all the pitchforks.

Just wondering if Weber decides to retire, could the Predators could trade him back, and pay him his salary for sitting at home?

To all the so-called experts out there that call Bergevin names, I am asking:

1) Who is a member of the Canadian team at this year's world cup?

2) Who is a true leader capable of keeping the team tight and united?

3) Who does not have a NTC?

4) Who takes the lesser cap hit?

5) Who's better on the Power Play?

6) Who's got the best physical presence in his own end?

7) Who is creating much less turnovers?

To those that confuse on ice effectiveness with "flashyness" ... think you know who gets the better end of the deal? Think again.
He's 30 years old with 10 years left on a $110 million contract. There's not many ways you can spin this deal to make it look good for MTL. They traded away a franchise dman with at least 8 years of quality hockey left for a guy on the tail end of his prime.

In a simulation
This is one of the strangest trades I can remember in the NHL. It kind of reminds me of a fantasy hockey trade where one guy just really wanted to make a trade. Weber and Subban are different players but overall they are for the most part the same guy, which is a true number 1 defenseman. In the short term I don't see either team really losing or gaining a whole heck of a lot.

That being said, when you consider that Subban is 3 years younger and has a much better contract situation this makes absolutely zero sens to me for the Habs, and will really benefit the Preds in the long run. Between this and the trade/signing of Andrew Shaw Bergevin needs to stay off the phones before he destroys his own team.

Wow, just, wow.

Weber's contract will destroy Nashville, not Montreal. If he retires early, Nashville gets hit with massive recapture penalties. If Weber drops off in performance, he's the easiest contract to trade in the NHL. Last 4 years are 3-1-1-1m on a 7.8m cap hit. It's an absolute dream for any tanking team looking to hit the floor.

Weber is approaching, or already on the wrong side of the hill.

And they're stuck with him for 10 more years.

And they lost a younger, better defenseman on a significantly better contract in terms of years.

One guy is in his mid 20's one guy is in his mid 30's. The guy in his mid 20's is arguably better or at worst a wash and is much younger.
