I think the reward is potentially very good.
If he ends up a second line centre by year 2, 3 or 4 you're looking at a guy who'd be worth 6M+ on the market.
I personnally think it's a fair projection to have him as a 45-55 pts center in a year or 2.
If he's just a third line center/winger, probably worth 2.5M to 3.5M.

Yes he's 21, but he was given every opportunity to produce and failed.

As of now, he's not worth the 3,6ish mil he's receiving and if his production doesn't go up, and there's no Kane/DeBrincat in Mtl, he'll have to develop other types of skills to justify his salary.

The injury and the fact that the injury was not NHL related- git injured elsewhere- maybe at world juniors so the season does not count as an accrued season. Not enough games played. 18 games would have been enough if the injury happened in NHL.

Kind of crazy how impactful this detail could be for players' career earning potential. An extra UFA year could be worth millions.

I like it. Liked this player a couple of years ago and now he's got a 150 games of NHL experience. Technically younger than Caufield.

I think he will be better in Montreal. He should take inspiration from their young group and that should make him feel good about his game.

...so you haven't watched that much of him, then, eh??...he is good defensively, one of his stronger points, and until his wrist injury, was progressing well within the Hawks system until they threw him to the wolves last year after he clearly stated to them that his wrist was not 100% healed...and his contract is under $3.4 mill for 4 years...the kid is 21, has sky high potential (hence his 3rd overall drafting), and will still be an RFA at the end of this deal...he needs to add strength/muscle, which he will, but to discredit all his other assets is thankfully not what HuGo is doing here...

I think this is a great deal, could end up being a steal, and if not, the cap hit and term are extremely reasonable for a big guy who's still developing. Still think Chicago screwed up big time with their management of this player and trading him.

He's definitely not weak. I would say one of his best attributes is how strong he is on the puck.

Hoffman, even when he was scoring 25+ goals and 55+ pts, was having a hard time finding teams wanting him.

Imagine now that he's an unidimensional , soon to be 33 yo, soft scoring winger... that doesn't score anymore...

I'm not saying people are lining up to acquire him, but you're pitching a false scenario here in effort to pretend the notion of trading him is hopeless.

He scored at just under a 20-goal pace this season on a tire fire of a team who couldn't ice the same roster in consecutive games all season because it was decimated by injury. And he did that in a season where he also had COVID.

Pretending his 25-goal seasons are something of the distant past and now "doesn't score anymore" is simply a fabrication.

It's the journalist who asked the question, Dach didn't bring up he was leaving money on the table... I think it's potentially leaving money on the table in year 3 and 4, not right now.

Yes, I do think it was a bit unique to that delayed 2020-21 season in that he got hurt at the world juniors in December before the season started because of the delay starting the 2020-21 season. In a normal year he has already played in the NHL for 2 plus months before being lent to jr team.

That said it could happen if we do a world cup of hockey in late summer before season starts. Guy gets hurt at WCup and misses most of the year costing him a season of UFA.
