Can we all laugh at this thread now? The Montreal fans thinking they would get a 1st or Bourque or Dellandrea for a guy who was just a cap dump. Petry is falling off the cliff. I could not be happier he did not end up in Dallas. We already have suter no need to have another one.

You're ignoring the context that Petry's NTC was the entire western conference. Only Detroit and Philly had room and cap space for Petry in the east and Philly is rebuilding. It was a one-team bidding war because Petry didn't want to start the season in Montreal. Dallas very likely outbid Detroit's offer but Petry wasn't interested in Dallas.

See I thought he was, or at least that was the ongoing rumour since his wife is a Texan. Maybe that alone was the only link connecting the two.

Either way, was very glad to hear Detroit stepped up to the plate instead.

Now hopefully we can finally put this thread to bed, and it doesn't live on for months the same way that Guri/Dadonov trade did.

To be fair he prefaced it by basically saying “if Bourque is sucking”.

So feel free to counter offer a bunch of random stuff for Slafkovsky, just make sure to preface it by saying “if Slafkovsky hasn’t done more by then”.
Even IF Bourque was sucking which he hasn't been i would still turn down the deal from a Dallas perspective. Hell even if Bourque was off the table Hakanpaa alone has more value than Petry @ 50% retention at least to Dallas IMO.

And you are ignoring the fact this guy was just a cap dump whose value is in a serious decline. You got what you could for him. You were never getting a 1st or someone like Bourque. It’s okay to accept reality.

That was a rumour, but in the end it didn't hold weight.

This trade had everything to do with Hughes's agreement with Petry to respect his family (kids starting school shortly) and not trying to squeeze every bit of value out of a potential trade partner.

In this situation, I wouldn't say Habs fans' expectations were out of wack, as multiple reporters speculated similar ideas, however in the end, Hughes had other motivations (respect) to get a deal done quickly.

I'm sure from the outside looking in, people are going to take this opportunity to say "I told you so" regarding Petry's value, but IMO that isn't accurate in this situation.
