MTL should have drafted Wright today, him and Suzuki would be a very good 1-2 punch down the middle for many years. So now they’re banking on Dach to be the next great centre for them. Hawks gave up on tervanen way too soon and now they gave up on Dach way too soon. 3rd overall from 3 years back, 150 NHL games under his belt and you ship him out.
Wright dropped to 4th, I don't think the Habs missed their shot there. Their first pick was the most ready player with solid skill. It's just a weaker draft. I'm not as much a fan of these next few moves, but none of these players are developed. You can't judge this now.

Okay? If you don't think he can reach his potential then you can be happy he was traded. Doesn't mean you will be right.

I'm sure when Chicago traded former 1st Phil Danault (5 points in 32 games at age 23) to the Habs they weren't expecting him to be putting up 20+ goals, 50+ points and being a favourite in the Selke race 6 years later. The Habs saw potential though and traded Weise and Fleischmann for Danault and a 2nd (Romanov) to buy low on a prospect that had fallen out of favour.
Lots of Hawk fans hated losing Danault and that trade.

I`d expect Dach to turn the corner. A center with size and skill. Now getting to play with kids like Slafkovsky, Suzuki, Caufield he`ll turn around. Atleast I hope so. If Montreal start getting more youngsters they grow together and it will be a fun team to watch. Next trade Allen for Puljujärvi. Let the kids play... :D

Caufield - Suzuki - Hoffman
Slafkovsky - Dach - Puljujärvi

I feel bad for Dach in this situation. Over drafted due to size and position then rushed to the NHL by a team that was foolishly trying to contend. Who sees a 1.17 PPG average in the WHL for an 18 year old and determines they have nothing left to learn?
IMO The trade is huge for Kirby. Davidson saw him as Bowman's legacy, wanted to prove himself by being Dach's savior despite the fact that he didn't offer any real help. Chicago fans even don't think he's worth a second-round pick after a frustrating year. Meanwhile Blackhawks has traded Cat, next season, they will be worse than this season.
But Hughes really wants him, still believe in him and is willing to overpay for him. When you're at your worst and someone is willing to give you a chance, it will help fix confidence.

So did the habs, Romanov is just 22 but there's nothing wrong with him.

Habs traded defense for offense.
Chicago traded offense (Dach/Debrincat) for picks and likely a lower draft position in 2023.
Habs traded defense for offense knowing they had defensemen coming to take the spot. They didn’t leave a hole.

Exactly the pressure in Montreal for a non francophone #2 young center who was considered expendable by the Black Hawks at age 21 and is an RFA isn't what one would call an ideal situation.

Raisons why HuGO made the splash:

* Knowing that Gulhe is ready to slot in Romanov spot right away.
* Need for size and skills in your top 6.
* Martin freaking St-Louis will develop the culture and mentality of our kids.
* Suzuki/Caufield/Dach/Slaf... come on now...

Is it some kind of gamble? Sure, all trades/draft are. But, i take Slaf/Dach vs Wright/Romanov...

Man what the Hawks are doing is just so baffling.

Loading up (at the last second, so not exactly game-planned) on picks in the weakest draft in over a decade, and getting awful value for their two best young cost-controlled building pieces.

Just about every single decision they made yesterday seems overwhelmingly like the incorrect one. With three last second trades, I can't imagine they had any semblance of a real plan going into last night, basically treating it like a drunken fantasy draft with the fellas.

How can back to back management groups continue to make such idiotic personnel decisions?

Disagree. His value use to be #3 overall. Now it is lower than that and we bought him at his new lower price.

Will that ever pay off for us and will his value ever get back up to where it use to be? Who knows.

I can see it that way. Pretty pointless argument either way I'd say, since that value can rebound or continue to drop. It's like a stock, you can buy it at a bottom or you are catching a falling knife. I personally like this trade for Montreal. But I'm like many on the Avs board, we're total size queens.

Some people are writing off Dach far too quickly. 21 year old, high skill, 6’4” centre.

He had a good rookie season, then a bad injury detailing his sophomore season (broken wrist that required surgery), and a disappointing 3rd year, but his potential is still sky high. The chance of him turning into a quality 2C is good, and a quality 1C is still possible IMO.

Dach is definitely safer than picking at 13. the pick can only maybe be bad. Dach you already know he is
Completly disagre to this. For me, Dach doesnt value a top 15 pick right, maybe a 25-30OV.

If you pick 15, you exactly know what you get there. The habs bought a player with a wish of a major change of scenery.

Not what I was expecting, I wanted a center with the 1OA and trade up for a winger.

But I'll give it a chance and see how Dach plays under Marty before condemning the moves.

Hope he can find his offensive game in MTL! 🤞

26 pts player with few offensive instincts. Do the Habs start him at 3c or 4c?

It's quite obvious they're not in a win mode yet so who cares? They won't put pressure on the youngsters.

They will finish bottom 5 again and might have a chance to draft Bedard.

They're definitively trying to get bigger and although i'm not a big fan of that strategy, we'll have a better idea if it's working or not in 2-3 years. IMO, they are 2-3 years behind Ottawa

Seems like a lot of people have given up on Dach. They may be right, but at the same time Kent Hughes said very clearly that the team did their home work on him before making the deal. The spoke to several people and they must have heard things that makes them confidant that they can turn Dach's game around and maximize his potential. Seeing how St-Louis "fixed" Caufleid... it is also easy to understand why habs fan are hopeful that he can do the same with Dach.

This trade goes DIRECTLY into the narrative that Kent Hugues has been pushing since he became the GM, i.e. that the will prefer to add young players that have already been drafted as opposed to pick. According to him, it is easier to project a player that as a bit more experience then a draft pick. I guess that in this case, they have seen enough and learn enough about Dach to know how to work with him, how to use him and set reasonable expectations. Bare in mind, Hughes expectation here may not be yours!!!!

Now, as far as value here goes... Going from Romanov to Dach is pretty good. I LOVED Romanov but lets face it, he's a No4 dman max on a good team and PK specialist. Zero offense in his game, prone to confusion in his own zone. Also, while he hits like a tank.... he's not very strong. I found he got out-work and out-muscled in the corners. So value wise, for MTL this makes lots of sense given the above. The 13th for him is pretty good value.

Now giving the 13thOV for Dach is a question mark and base on what we know now... well I don't think anyone can say if there is a winner as MTL need to "fix" Dach and CHI got magic beans and hope that Nazar will be better then Dach. There are questions mark on both side... Where I think people get side track here is when the compare the return to the Debrincat trade... well that is unfair as OTT got a pretty great deal (despite the player being close to UFA).
