I would say top 4 also, but I kinda understand the bottom 4 part as many would consider him to not have the potential to be a #1 or 2 defenseman. Therefore he can end up in any role 3/4/5/6. The term seems derogatory though.
To good to be a #5/6. Not enough offensive to be a #1/2 .That leaves #3/4 in which what he exactly is.

I don't think Dach would be doing this in Chicago. Suzuki and Caufield are better than any forward the Hawks have outside of Patrick Kane.

They traded him because it just wasn't going to happen here.
Which makes sense and the best offer they got was from the Habs.

As a Hawk fan that has seen 3 years of him and likes him as a player-leave him at wing. He's not a center. If he could win 44% of his draws it might be doable but he's been into the 30s for 2 seasons now. Dach is basically an auto loss at the dot.
Agreed

As a Hawks fan, I’m happy to see Dach is playing really well. I always liked him (hence the name) and wish him well with the Habs. Hopefully, Nazar can get healthy and become a really good player for us in the future making this trade more of a debate as to who won and who lost.

You have a amazing young prospect with Nazar. But as a Habs fan, i'm really thrilled to have a young player like Kirby Dach. He play right now like a 3rd overall pick. He needed a change of coach and he play with 2 beauty in Suzuki and Caufield. The future is bright for both teams ! You have Korchinski in DeBrincat trade too, not bad at all 😉

i think chicago thought dach was going to be a constant injury concern and that they wanted a better lottery ticket for the 2023 draft.

so far dach has been playing pretty well. it remains to be seen how this trade will work out.

I havnt seen him play in Montreal sounds like hes doing great. I am not sure that would have happened here. He was completely disinterested. Maybe the trade woke him up. Good on him. Hope Nazar proves to be worth it.

It's also bizarre that people think having a 27 year old on the roster with 21 year olds is some sort of abhorent thing. And it's bizarre to think that you want a roster of 15 20 year olds, a couple of 19 year olds and an 18 year old.

If they wanted to trade Dach because they had doubts about his potential... that's fine.
If they wanted to trade him because they loved the guys available in the 1st this year, that's fine.

But if they dealt him because they thought he was too old... that's just stupid.
I do not get this dosconnect by people. Nobody should conclude they thought Dach was too old or didn't fit the timeline.

It is bizarre how many make points like that and don't get this was apart of simply tanking better.

The fact Dach is playing well, would be bad if he was on the Hawks for the future of the club. They need multiple years of talent like Dach. Getting a better star talent this draft, and probably the next 2 years is critical. That's why Dach and Debrincat were gone. Why Toews and Kane at the deadline are likely gone. People were saying with Dach and Cat they would be worse enough to tank, that's clearly not the case. Though they have had an easy schedule so far that changes soon. Even with the moves, the trade is to get another near top 10 talent and be an awful team that gets likely 3-4 more talents that they need.

I still don't understand the logic regarding "rebuilds take 4-5 years". He'd be still under UFA age. Are they just expecting to keep zero of their current prospects before 2022 too? Like I understand maybe cutting off Strome or Debrincat as you think they'll be 30, but Dach isn't going to keep you out of the basement by himself.
Go back to Tampa and Colorado. They take at least 5 years.

Why would you want to compare what Chicago is doing to what Colorado and Tampa did? Those teams hung onto their young, high upside guys unless they were basically forced to move them (ROR, Duchene, Drouin). They were also focusing in keeping those guys until they got the best offers possible and also weren't targeting just picks.

What Chicago is attempting doesn't bear much resemblance to what either of those teams did.

We'll have a better feel by mid-Jan. Montreal is riding a high, and winning emotional games right now, but the underlying numbers are spooky and we might feel very different in 2-3 months.

Honestly, I don't get why Chicago did this. Big win for the Habs
This deal looks like when John Leclair been traded by Montreal. Big forward with skills traded too early. Big mistake maded by Montreal. Honestly, when Dach been trAded by Chicago, I knew that I wouldnt liked to be in their fan’s shoes. To play in the NHL at that age is a feat itself. Production is tough to project at that age. I watched every habs game, this guy is flying out there, bring a physical presence and high hockey IQ. He can make pass like Suzuki is able. Today, Lamoriello call me and offer me romanov for Dach and I declined pretty easily, even if I value Romy as top 4 dman

The way Dach is playing right now the Habs won't trade him. They have been looking for a winger who can play with Caufield/Suzuki for a while. Dach complete the trio wonderfully. Now he is part of the core going forward.

This is complete nonsense. If Dach was on CHI they'd be no better than they are now, except they'd have 1 more piece in place. If they need multiple years of a guy like Dach, then keeping him makes a lot more sense than trading him to draft a guy who may not be one of those pieces.

If there's a difference, it would be that management in Montreal wanted to make a center out of him. And likely a 3rd line center at that. The tale end of Savard's tenure was not pretty.

If Dach makes them no better why would they need a piece like Dach?

And to again say to draft "a" guy... its noy abouta single piece. It's so oddly short sighted by people and it's not like the Chicago GM hasn't been directly clear his goal is long term. He just had a new interview in the athletic repeating that notion.
