For all the laughing by Montreal fans for Carolina trading late pick for KK to see them trade 13th overall for Dach.

Feels good

Does it still feel good? Or do you feel silly cause Kotkaniemi is signed forever and only has 3 points meanwhile last night Dach had twice as many goals in the game against Vancouver as Kotkaniemi has this season?

Dach trade already turned out really well for the Habs
Young enough to develop more upside potential
Not sure what the Blackhawks thinking but gave up on Dach too soon

Well they may have been able to get a player of Dach's ability with the 13th pick(Nazar), and the 66th pick(Hayes)...

I think from their perspective they were giving up a guy failing at C, and right now he is playing winger for MTL. He fits well no doubt but he is not a center … yet.

Also I think more than the faceoff thing, they were afraid of injuries

Can't believe we traded a bottom 4 D for a top line W/top 6 C. Absolute win by Hughes/Gorton!
Romanov is doing well with Islanders. He's the biggest addition to their team last offseason and they have improved a ton this year as a team. He's 2nd on the team in even strength minutes. Calling him a bottom 4 D is unnecessary attempt at boosting HuGo.

Romanov is being seriously underrated since the trade.

Happy with the trade but still love/miss Romanov, he is a lock for top 4D on almost every team.

Agreed. Romanov is well liked in Habs land. We had to give to get unfortunately.

I swear some fans try to figure out top 4D by how many points they have. Comical.

You can't believe it cause it's not true .

Romanov is not a bottom 4D. It's a good trade for both the Islanders and the Habs (today). We will see how this ages over more time. I'd say edge to Dach today but it's not a wide margin

What the hell is a "Bottom-4 D"? I mean, the top-range of a bottom-4 D could play 22 minutes a night, and bottom-range would play 12 minutes.

I don't have a problem with someone saying bottom 4D. It just don't apply to Romanov. I will say a guy like Savard on the Habs is a bottom 4D. Can play 2nd pairing or 3rd paring depending on team fit.

Savard has been very good this season, he’s showing a lot more then Romanov showed us, mind you he’s still very young. I don’t miss him at all.

So we understand each other,
A 2nd pairing Dman that you like is called a top 4 Dman while a 2nd pairing Dman that you don’t like is called a bottom 4?
I think he was more inferring that Romanov doesn't have the capability of being on a top pairing. Which is pretty fair at this point, his upside seems like a #3 at best.

It may be a significant win for both sides. Romanov was not needed. They have at least 4d that will be as good or better than Romanov within a couple of years. And the Islanders get a d they need who is ready now.

what??
Romanov is still a decent player maybe a top 3 in many teams.
Don'T forget that Dach costed us Romanov + #66 (pretty much a 2nd rd) + #98 (almost a 3rd rd), it's just not Romanov.
So far the deal looks good on both side.
But the price was steep.

That's a pretty bold statement. I doubt anyone has 4 defenseman in the pipeline who will all be as good or better than Romanov.

With that said, good trade for both teams. MTL has the chance to pull out ahead though if Dach can really attain his potential. It was a bold move for them, but clearly looks like the right move.

To be fair the Habs were one of those teams. Harris, Guhle and Xhekaj have seamlessly filled the void and performed significantly better than our D corps of last year. On top of that we've got Barron knocking on the door. Mailloux, Hutson, and Engstrom all look like great prospects at the moment as well.

Hughes certainly acted on a perceived area of strength and managed to come out ahead as a result. None of these other guys could have fetched Dach last season but seem to be decent to great at filling the gap Romanov leaving left.

I hate that Habs fans are talking down Romanov just for the sake of winning the trade.

With both Matheson out and Edmundson just returning he would have led the Habs defence in ice time if he was still on the team. He is a solid #3 but people will talk him down because he doesn’t put up big offensive numbers.

The Habs really gambled that Dach would return to form and he has. They had to give up a lot to get a lot.

Stay on topic in this thread or people will be removed from it. The thread is discussing the Dach trade, not players not involved in this trade or roster line up for the Habs next year or anything else.

I like Romanov. Heck, I LOVED him and was very sad to see him go. as @Ezpz said, What I'm implying with "bottom 4 D" is simply that he'll probably never be a true top line D.

Exactly. I liked Romanov but I don’t really feel his absence.

Guhle should be better than him. Xhekaj and Harris have the potential to be equals
