Dach is going to play #3 C, behind two very responsible guys in Suzuki and Dvorak. Add in #4C Evans and he will have a ton of support. Should get very favorable minutes with some pretty good wingers, guys that have / project 20+ goals. Add in MSL as coach and the is going to be put in a position to succeed.

Love me some Romo but his upside is less then Dach IMO and we have a stack of D prospects. Team is most definitely better, and with Slaf, Anderson and Dach that is a big forward group.

This philophy was what Bergevin did, build a great bottom 6 and take a look where we are. You're not a Romanov fan, we get it. But apparently, he worths a 13 OV and if you realy want to trade that kind of asset in a rebuild context, make sure that it help your top 6 forwards or a top 4 dmen, what Romanov was projected to be.

Also, the way it has been sold, this guy is for our top 6 and as a center, two roles he has failed.

I don't see dach turning it around nearly enough to make this worthwhile for mtl.
Because you know how bad his wrist is?
Dach for magic beans is a win for MTL... Wish Edmonton traded Puljujarvi+ their 1st for him instead

I remember Romanov was listed as untouchable in the “MTL trades for 2nd overall” thread(s)

for the people with sudden amnesia:

Prospects:

All of Montreal prospects (Guhle, Barron, Roy and Harris included)

Players:

All of Montreal roster excluding Romanov, Caufield and Suzuki.

Which ones were they?

Since there was "a lot of Hab fans" saying this, could you point a few of them out?
To be fair, i saw the comment a few times. Dont really agree with it, as everyone has a price IMO. However, i was never a big fan of generalizations.

Dach seems to have some better upside than Romanov, apparently, though i admit to having a little thought on the Drouin Vs Sergachev trade when it happened. I think the habs wanted Slaf but needed to get a 1 or 2C to make the fans get over the fact that we get #1OA and still dont get one, despite having no 1C since Damphousse

Only time will tell with Dach. It's of course largely related to his wrist injury but the route taken by the Hawks is also in question in regards to his slow development. He could be a huge win for Montreal or a huge loss. Hawks are super happy with the Nazar pick though so maybe a win win.

Not a fan of this deal, feel like this could be a Griffin Reinhart to Edmonton type move where a new GM trying to speed up rebuild by trading for a recent 3rd overall.
Or it could be a Gorton style steal of Zibanejad and Strome. But let’s be negative

I loved Romanov but his ceiling was a top 4 and he would very unlikely add offense to his game. Dach will START as a 3C and we’ll develop his game. His ceiling is much higher.

Ha, you guys. Romanov is EXACTLY the type of player MB loves, grinder with limited offensive upside. I have no idea how Dach will turn out but after watching Romanov play 100 games I have a pretty good idea about the player we traded. I'd take a 35-40 point 3C over a 15-20 point 4/5 dman every day of the week.

Japhi, who are those 20 goals+ scoring wingers Dach will play with on the 3rd line?
edit: oh now Romanov is a 3rd pairing guy? Imagine saying that in here 2 weeks ago.

I dont get what Chicago is doing. Dach arguably has more upside than anyone in this draft.

I agree it's early to give up on Dach. But if they end up with 1-2 OA pick next year it could all be worth it. To me, it is looking like they are all in to achieve just that.

There is no such thing as untouchable, as has been proven time and again. Anyone that claims a player is, doesn't know the history of the game. And anyone that claims a 2nd round pick with zero offense and questionable defense is untouchable is just being a fanboy.

I was shocked by the trade, came out of the blue, but come on.

What in his game today screams top 4 guy.

And where did I say he will play with 20 goal guys? I have no idea who he will play with, but for what it's worth almost every winger in the top 6 has been within reach of 20 in the last few years. If he lines up between Dadanov and Gallagher, one had 20 last year and the other is likely to rebound to 20 as well. Hardly a stretch to see Dach going 15/20 for 35. I mean he already has early career Lars Eller type stats, a guy that was loved by Habs fans and broke 30 points once.

Post 305: Should get very favorable minutes with some pretty good wingers, guys that have / project 20+ goals.

You listed Dvorak at 2c and dach 3c.

dach best is 9? Gally 7 ly?
You are hoping for rebounds. If your 3rd line wingers score 20+, say goodbye to Bedard. In the playoffs for sure. 1st line wingers will score 40+, 2nd liners 30+. The Colorado team.

HABs did very well on this deal.

Romanov was overrated and HABs are deep with DMen prospects. Deal for underperforming Dach + pick was incredible. He was always a darkhorse boom/bust prospect. If he develops, this could change the future of the team.

This was a worthwhile gamble and believe most teams would have made this deal. Romano/1st don’t have the same potential, they might be better, but upside is also lower.

Congrats of the deal, I believe the Habs fleeced the Hawks.

You have to give to get, i like the gamble on Dach, i think he has an ok floor (even at wing in worst case) and a pretty high ceilling at 2c. Romanov was a very solid guy for us and definitely a rare breed of compact physical D. In the end i think the weak depth in our Center prospect pool justifies the swap (and risk/reward potential) since our LD pool is pretty good at the level of Romanov's potential 3-4C with low offense/good mobility.

If Dach can reach 75-80% of his potential he will be a very good player for us either at C or Wing, i like his stride and hands, could see him getting more physical when he fills his frame.

Why are you giving ammunitions to the trolls?

Romanov is a good 3/4 dman.

You can have different type of player in a top 4. I think there is a fair chance that he can become a Scottie Hannan 2.0 which was a dman that every NHL team asked for half a decade. For now, Romanov has more chance to reach this ceiling than Dach to fullfil his own... and Im wonder he's still be a center before the end of the year.

I think this was win-win. Hawks get a prospect in Nazar who has a pretty high ceiling and is a better fit for what we want to do (fast, high effort team) as well as a solid prospect in Gavin Hayes, who could be a decent player, and Habs buy low on a player who looked like an absolute stud in the play-in series against Edmonton. Not sure if Dach stays at C as he’d have to dramatically improve his faceoff ability but I think he ends up being at least a good 3rd liner with solid defense. The potential is still there for him to be a top-6 player too. I liked Dach a lot as a Hawks fan and I’m sad to see him go but I also am really high on Nazar. Hope it works out well for both teams!

Exactly what I think, it’s a possible win win trade, well I hope it goes that way, always loved the Hawks so Im rooting for both clubs

I’m happy that Dach gets to play for another Original 6 team where he seems like he’ll be a better fit. A lot of centers seem to get better at faceoffs once they leave here so maybe Dach is another one. Hopefully Dach and Nazar can both be great players and there’s a legitimate debate 5-6 years from now over who actually won this trade.

For all the laughing by Montreal fans for Carolina trading late pick for KK to see them trade 13th overall for Dach.

Feels good

Lol, you might have missed a few subtle differences between both situations...

1. They aren't paying Dach over 6M dollars next year.
2. They probably aren't planning to offer him an 8 year/36 million contract in a few months.
3. Last but not least, they aren't going to play Dach 10 minutes per game on the 4th line,
