A Panthers fan here once mentioned that even the South Florida media either didn't consider him a star or didn't include him in a poll or list of stars playing for South Florida based teams, this was, I think the Covid season? Maybe they changed their minds but even back then, wow.

Homer vote for Jalen Chatfield.

Thomas Harley probably belongs in this conversation, he'll likely always be in Miro's shadow as long as they're both in Dallas, but he really stepped up and broke out while 4 was out and even now he's a legit top-pair LD in his own right. Also wonder if Morrissey doesn't get enough credit for what he brings, even though he racks up so many assists he's often forgotten among Norris caliber D-men.

I'll continue beating this drum. There are legit people that think Alexis Lafreniere is anywhere from a worse bust than Yakupov to not an NHL player. Meanwhile he's been the third best forward on the Rangers 5 on 5 and arguably overall. And the Rangers are a contender for the Presidents' Trophy. His haters are absolutely clueless. Dude doesn't get great numbers because he doesn't get PP1 time. And yes I'll admit even with PP1 time his stats would likely not be on par with other 1st overalls. But people think he's an all time bust and a terrible player are clueless.

I think Eriksson-Ek is a good choice to take the crown, especially amongst the layfan. Definitely not a household name.

And yes for the Avs it's Nichuskin. Lots of big names overshadow him he's an essential part of the puzzle.

This thread needs a little nitpicking: It should read "most underrated but also quite good". If "underrated" is the only criteria I could as well be nominated.

Who in this thread is underrated but not quite good? I'm pretty sure you're rated properly.

I mean, the joke doesn't make sense but ok. Even if someone bad is called underrated in this thread it still doesn't make sense to compare it to you since you're not underrated (in NHL terms). So that joke fell flat. Besides who in this thread is bad but called underrated? And if we're talking about a 4th liner that's a good 4th liner but treated as an average or bad 4th liner, what's wrong with that?

I'd say...in no particular order...

-Chandler Stephenson. The guy is the ultimate utility knife. He's like a true Leatherman that just goes to work and does the job. Not some chincy Swiss Army knife that is okay at everything but kinda bad at everything too. He's fast, hard working, genuinely skilled 60pt reliable 2-way Center who can play Wing and meshes with pretty much anyone, year after year. People still act like he's just a 3rd line grinder who got a lucky boost Becuz Vegaz.

-Adrian Kempe. Quietest perennial top line top flight goal scorer with a big noticeable powerful and speedy game. I honestly don't understand how he flies so under the radar. It's not like he's one of those "quiet" players who only stands out on deeper inspection.

-Philip Danault. The above-mentioned "quiet" player who is just one of the best unsung 2-way matchup Centers in the entire league. He's so good. Doesn't typically stand out nor does his steady ~50pts a year, so i can at least understand why he gets underrated. But he's worth so much more than that production.

-Joel Farabee. Also doesn't post the most gaudy numbers in the world on the surface, but he's a bit of an even strength beast, and a real engine on the ice that makes things happen.

-Cam Fowler. Sort of gets lost, drowning trying to carry that Ducks blueline. But he does a pretty admirable job of trying.

-Ivan Provorov. Similar to Fowler in a lot of respects, as a guy who has been dumped in over his head a lot. People have actually noticed him though, and i think way overreacted to it. People actually seem to think he's a "bad" player. When he's actually a very good player, with flaws...who seems to constantly find himself in bad situations that highlight them by expecting more from him than he has to give. But it definitely makes him "underrated" at this point imo.

-Nino Niederreiter. Just the most rock solid, steady as she goes, ~20G - 40Pt winger out there. Just does everything you'd want from that sort of player and without much of any fuss or drama. Basically just the current archetype of an effective, reliable Middle-6 Complementary Winger.

Avs Artturi Lehkonen. After beeing used as a 3-4th liner for yrs in Montreal, he is playing 1-2nd line on Avs and very good 2-way player. In Colorado his stats are:

111gp 39g 45a 84p +19

playoffs:

27gp 11g 9a 20p +5

This while beeing very solid defensively.

Binnington is a good call.

Robert Thomas is another name from the Blues. I don’t think people, even some Blues fans, really understand he is having an ELITE top 10 franchise 1C type of season right now. Guy does not get the attention he deserves from the national media.

Good list, but you’re forgetting Kyle Connor!
Thomas is so underrated that when he made the ASG this year, there were people who literally had no idea who he was. I think he'll win a Selke at some point in his career too.

Dahlin. For most the year he led the NHL in goals for defenseman and I believe has the most ice time in the NHL for a defenseman. He does everything as a 23 year old defenseman and people want to put him in a tier under the better defenseman in the NHL.

At this point. Honest answer. Trevor Zegras. So many unnecessary haters for zero reason and anyone who has him as overrated must just have absurd expectations of him in their own mind because he was a video game cover athlete.

For years, Wild know-it-all Mike Russo would bitch about the Wild should have drafted Brock Boeser instead. I guess he's on board now that the Canadian NHL media refers to JEE as Selke-calibre. (Meaning he's not all that underrated anymore either.)

Should have won the Norris last year and this year the only thing keeping him out of the conversation is his forwards struggling to finish chances.

Interesting that two guys in this thread were part of the Habs run to the Cup finals a couple of years ago. Danault and Lehky. I agree on both of those players. That Habs team got shit on for the pandemic shortened season, but in hindsight, it was vastly underrated, and Danault + Lehky are but two pieces of that puzzle that proves that.
