Nic Dowd is the perennial winner of this, has quietly been the best player on some of the league’s best 4th lines for a few years, does everything well and has skill above his role

This year it might be Sonny Milano right now though
As a Kings fan, this brings a smile to my face. Dowd was a great young role player for us and I’m so happy that he’s really sunk his teeth into his role and is half way through a very nice career. Great kid, great attitude, great work ethic.

I was going to mention Kane also.

I’d add Foegele outside of his stone hands. Guys a competitive and useful player that can play up and down the lineup and HFboards has attempted to convince me he’s a worthless cap dump of a player.

If every player on the team showed up game in game out to play a full 60 like Foegele does we’d be the contenders the media predicted us to be.
Absolutely, I always notice #37

Rantanen. So mucg focus is on MacKinnon and Makar so he is left in the shadows.

Tavares

Everyone wants the downfall, but it just can’t happen.
I see Tavares getting a lot of ink for under-rated. I think he only gets ink because there are no Leaf players earning basic salaries with any hope of moving the bar. So Tavares at $11million plus, and no respect compared to his peers, gets an underrated nod. Which it's completely idiotic to put him in an underrated category for any reason. He has never earned his salary since he's arrived. He's been overshadowed by his linemates since he arrived. And he's never been at the forefront of any team led anything since he arrived. Calling him underrated is simply a luxury for Leaf fans who have gotten usedto his high salary and relatively low output...sorry, but Tavares is a bust. Not under-rated.

On the other hand. Flyers have many, many bona fide candidates in this young season. And wake up NHL, because LA salary dump Sean Walker is performing at 1st line duties levels in Philly! 17G, 3G + 5A wow at 21 minutes a game!! and a plus 6 to go along with it, go ahead and look up advanced stats for confirmation. He has been cathartic, moving up into offense with finishing ability, and all-around reliability while the very very young Flyers defence has adapted to extended absences of their veteran presences from Staal and Risto.

I bet if he was interviewed, he would say something like " I have never been so comfortable in my role in the NHL! I love what Coach Tortarella is doing, and I hope to be a part of it for the future!".

It is definitely Mikey Anderson, imo. I hated him getting put up as the #2 defenseman on the team right out of the box at like 21 years old because Doughty asked for him, but he really deserves it now and is our best defenseman more often than not. His contract is one of the biggest steals in the NHL.

Watching a lot of Sabres this year, Casey Mittelstadt doesn't get close to all the love he deserves.
And yet I got mocked with laugh reactions relentlessly for daring to suggest Mittelstadt can be better than Zegras. Look at Zegras this season and look at CM. Lol I swear this whole board is scattered with teenagers and petty full grown men (who have negative value hockey knowledge and elementary-level player evaluation skills.)

People should listen to the fans if you don't watch the games.

Before his injury, Greig was looking very solid. Slotted right into the bottom six and did not look out of place for a second, which is great for a young guy.

Blake Coleman for me, always working and makes the right plays.

Guy gets talked about on this site like he's a cap dump because he's not on the PP. Been that way for years, never got it.

Him and Backlund can be put out against anyone and it usually ends well

Marcus Petterson. Just a very good player. Used to hate his guts too, but he’s become completely indispensable.

Phillip Di Giuseppe - Compliments J.t Miller and Brock Boeser perfectly. Grinds it out night in and out. Does a little bit of everything on a line that is out producing the first line 5 on 5.

PDG is a real good choice for Vancouver. He's just such a blue collar sort of utility player who has really come into his own with his spot on that line. Real "glue guy" on the line who embraces doing the spadework on the forecheck, in the corners, wherever...just getting the puck to his more skilled linemates effectively.

The other option for this might be Mikheyev though. He's got that more substantial contract, but it feels like he's hardly ever talked about. But he's exactly the sort of player you would love to have one of on every single line. For a lot of the same reasons as PDG, but with a little bit more of most things.

For Tampa it’s probably Mike Eyssimont. High intensity player, he’s just flying out there with a motor that just won’t quit.

Maybe he’s the Yanni Gourde replacement we’ve all been dreaming of.

Right now?

Charlie Coyle. On pace for 72 points (so far, i see this dipping though) while not centering Pasta and Marchand much all season.

When you compare the general opinion to actual on-ice play, it's Tavares.

But Brodie might be the better answer. He still has games where he leads the team in ice time, playing all of those minutes well, yet the general opinion is that he's cooked.
