The dumbest thing about this discourse is the people that think “having to answer for how you scored your empty net goal” excuses a crosscheck to the head.

bullshit.

if he has to answer for a loser’s hurt feewings…drop the gloves and make him answer for it. Like a man. Not like a petulant child throwing dangerous cheap shots.

Reilly looks like a clown here. At least it matches his reputation on the ice.

So fire is an illegal check to the head after a play to an unexpecting player? But adding some flair to a goal isn't fire? Cute, Sportsnet. Cute.

why would Greig be "unexpecting" a reaction if he added flair to a goal in the final seconds? He knew exactly what he was doing and that it would draw a reaction, acting otherwise is completely naive.

You can take issue with the severity of the response obviously, but the idea that he was going to do that and just skate away without anyone taking issue is moronic. When you purposefully antagonize you have to expect a pushback.

Agree 100% - - there’s nothing wrong with showboating and trying to embarrass the opponent.

Just understand that there’s going to be retaliation and repercussions for doing so.
The retaliation still shouldn't be a dangerous and illegal check to the head.

I admittedly have no interest in reading back through 80 pages of comments to confirm this post, but most of what I’ve seen has been nothing of the sort.

The general take seems to be, Rielly was justified in going after Greig, but the fact it ended up being a headshot makes it suspension worthy.

And Rielly has no such reputation you’re insinuating.

This is the kind of play that should get 10-15 games. It's not part of the game.

People are getting a bunch of games for split second bad hits. Reilly had forever to think about this, with no time left, after a goal and still came to the decision to lay a cross-check to the head.

This is kind of play that is pure garbage.

Gotta love the Sportsnet panel too.

Panel: love to see that fire from Reilly!
Also panel: bush league play by Greig.

Oddly enough SN usually demonizes that sort of thing what Reilly did and celebrate a Zegras me first kind of goal like Greig did. I was surprised Woke Ron and Botterill didn't seem to mind what Reilly did.

2-3 games max...this is not a 10-15 game suspension given Reilly hit his shoulder first + Greig got up rather quickly after trying to sell being hurt.

What you don’t understand is that there is this code in hockey with many unwritten rules. The reason why these rules are not written down is because these rules can change at any time and you can be punished for doing completely legal things in the game.

Remember the code, or try to, or else face the consequences.

LOL

"The Code". Like Rielly cares about that crap.

Im pretty sure using your stick as a weapon is against "The Code".

Well he wasn't looking until the last second, so that's unexpecting to me.

He probably assumed he'd get some chirps or maybe a slash on the shin. Zero chance he thought he was getting cross checked to the face, especially by a historically clean player.
